Couldn't find a thread on him - I think he had a decent world cup and has looked decent in pre season. He's still only young, and I'm still unsure what Brendan is going to do at the back. Lovren and Sahko both usually play on the left side. If Agger is going that leaves Skrtel on the right hand side. Could Coates be an option on the right? Just listening to TAW from last week this morning, DH seemed sure Coates was just in the shop window. If that's true I'm not so sure he doesn't deserve a bit of a go this year based on the above.

 

Skrtel could be better with Lovren really bossing him at the back, but I'm still not convinced that he's quite as good as we need.

 

Ilori probably isn't ready.

 

And the final thought - could he be thinking about three at the back, Skrtel, Lovren and Sahko?

 

I actually think the defence might be the most interesting aspect of our season. We really need to improve what went on there last year. Some of the midfield changes may well do that on their own. Last nights game I thought we looked improved defensively. And apart from the goal against Roma right at the death I would probably say the same.

 

Interested in how people are seeing it.

It's a shame how it's gone for him really, there were times when he was sitting on the bench while Carra looked shot to pieces and played every game, then the injury etc. He bossed it in games v City and Chelsea. Looked dodgy in some v lower league teams but after sitting on your a*** for 5 months then getting the call amongst unmotivated players v a league one team its not really surprising is it? Has looked good again in pre season. I'd rather have him in our defence and hopefully learning from mistakes rather than a veteran who's been making the same mistakes year after year after year.

I'm hoping with start with Sakho and Lovren, that could be ace.

 

Coates is a very weird one, strange career with us to date, he looked really promising when we bought him.

 

You'd think Agger was off, then it is what to do with Iiori, Srktel, Toure and Coates.

 

Thats seven centre backs we currently have.

I like Coates. I would rather give him a spot over, say, Toure.

But if Agger stays there's no way he'll get any game time, in that case we'd be better selling him as the two are quite similar in the way they play.

 

I reckon it might be Lovren and Sakho either starting the season, or getting more minutes together the longer the campaign continues.

People keep saying Sahko and Lovren - but they both play on the same side. Why would you spend 17m or 20m on a player then play them somewhere they are uncomfortable?

 

Seems mental to me, which is why I keep wondering about the 3 at the back thing.

People keep saying this but he's played on both sides. It's a non issue imo.

Was that last year Tommo? I haven't seen a lot of him at all, so if that's true then it makes a lot more sense.

 

It's also mean we'd probably ditch Agger, because we'd have Skrtel for the right hand side as cover and Lovren shift over and could do the left. You would see Coates being moved on then as well I'd have thought.

Yep altho it's fair to say he's played a lot on the left, I remember seeing quite a few YouTube clips showing him playing on the right and he is right footed.

Playing on the right side as a right footed CB is just easier, you get to tackle and pass with your better foot all the time. I've played left side loads and you get used to the positioning, but when you move back to the right it soon becomes easier. Confident Lovren will be happy on he right.

Rumours about Danny to barca and ilori on loan to deportivo. Could he stay as 4th choice....

 

If Wisdom worked so well at Derby and they no longer have Wisdom then I'd like to see Ilori go there... by that time this season is over he'll have had at least one (?) season in the Portuguese league, he'll have played (in Spain wasn't it) for one season and one season in England. We should have a decent idea by then if he is going to make it...
