major shock

The Liverpool defender Fábio Aurélio will be out of action for up to a month, thanks to the hamstring injury he sustained during Sunday's 3-1 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Anfield.

The Brazilian limped off 24 minutes into match and on Tuesday the club confirmed that he had suffered a tear to the muscle. Aurélio has been troubled by a series of niggling injuries this season and he had only just returned from an adductor problem.

Liverpool's head of sports medicine and sports science, Dr Peter Brukner, told the club's website: "He's got a significant hamstring injury. Unfortunately, his body lets him down. He always play well when he's fit. We've been managing him carefully because he's not been playing twice in a week, but this just came out of the blue.

"He had a minor adductor strain a few weeks before that. We rehabilitated him and he trained all week with no problems at all. He's obviously very down. It was a sad sight to see him walking off the pitch. He's frustrated because he was playing well on Sunday. He was looking forward to getting a run of games."

Dr Brukner also said that the central defender Daniel Agger was unlikely to recover from a knee injury in time for Thursday's Europa League match against Braga.

He said: "Daniel had a nasty kick on a joint to the side of his knee. It's an unusual spot to get an injury. They take time and he's a bit of a slow healer. He's still not 100% so we'll have to see if he's fit for the game this week. But it's more likely to be the following week."

Martin Kelly, who has a similar hamstring injury to Aurélio, and Jonjo Shelvey (knee) will miss the trip to Portugal.

Imagine how awesome he would have been if he had never been injured in his life.

Like a cross between Maldini and a leftfooted Alonso is my guess.

I hope we release him for good, this time. What a waste of wages.

And sell Agger too.

Yep, uses the wages elsewhere. Both quality but its not really any use to us when they hardly ever play and even some of the games they do play they are still rusty from injury anyway. Its not like we have huge depth in defence so whenever someone else gets injured aswell ie Kelly it leaves us on the verge of a complete crisis at the back.

Kelly's had a lot of injury problems himself over the last few years and we have to sort it out sooner rather than otherwise as he still growing physically if not in height.

Agger is the sad one. Clearly so talented and should have many more years of him, but he's really really bad at keeping himself fit. One can maybe have an injury prone winger or a fullback but not a centre half/centre mid as its not a good habit to change your spine many times during the season and we're doing just that with Agger.

He's on a pay as you play deal isn't he?

Standard two year contract isn't it?

I think Benitez offered him pay as you play before he left and he turned it down and then - shock horror - found that there wasn't exact;y a hughe line of clubs waiting to take a 30 year old who is always injured. He was a free agent but then Hodgson came in and decided to give him a two year contract (or Purslow did, one or the other).

Dreadful decision - and I say that as someone who has always really liked Aurelio as a player.

You're right - just dug back thru the articles on the offal. I like him too and was OK with it being a Pay as you Play - but a full 2 year deal was mad. MInd you we had very little option at the time. FOP.

Insua was on the books at the time, but had been frozen out of the squad, first being given a marginal squad number (>50), then having even that taken away.

Yep. It's tragic really. I remember that one game when Rafa played him in Center Midfield and he was absolutely brilliant. It's such a loss.

Shouldn't be that surprising. He played in central midfield a few times for Valencia.

real shame isn't it, am sure all he wants to do is play.

But there comes a time when you have to realize you're going to cripple yourself if you keep trying and it's time to hang up your boots and relax instead.

I think that's it for him, sadly. Trusted in a big game again, and fell apart again. Gutted for him, he's been quality, scores goals, head down, don't think he's even given an interview since he's been here, but his body is just not up to it.

Someone was posting recently about our failure in picking up a good bosman since McAllister and Babbel but Aurelio, even with his injury problems, was a very good free signing.

Quality player when fit, unfortunately that is very rare. Time to get rid in the summer.

If he couldn't pick up another club when was on a free we're hardly likely to be able to sell him on at this stage are we....
