Title number five 1947 - We clinched our fifth League title when Stoke City lost 2-1 at Sheffield United. We therefore finished one point ahead of Manchester United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and two ahead of the Potters. The news came through on the day that we clinched the Liverpool Senior Cup by beating Everton 2-1, thanks to goals from Jack Balmer and William Watkinson. The match was actually halted five minutes from time so that director George Richards could address the crowd by loudspeaker with the news. RIP Gordon Hodgson 1951 - Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson died of cancer in Burslem. He had bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games after signing from Transvaal in November 1925. He could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa in January 1936 for £3,000. In comes Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m. He was on target as he came off the bench to help us claim the FA Community Shield on his debut, bagging a total of 33 goals in 96 outings across his first two campaigns. Happy birthdays 1857 – The club’s first Manager, William Barclay, was born in the Kilmainham Auxiliary of the South Dublin Workhouse. He worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the club’s existence, having previously been Vice Chairman of Everton. 1878 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard was born in Heaton Norris, Stockport. He signed from Glossop for £460 in February 1902 and grabbed 77 goals in 414 reds games, helping us to Second Division and League championships. He was nominated into the club’s official Hall Of Fame, for the 1910-20 era. Scott’s record 2007 - Scott Carson equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps by claiming his 27th, to move level with both Jamie Carragher and Gareth Barry. England were held to a 2-2 draw by Italy in a European Championships Finals group game in the Netherlands, with future red Alberto Aquilani on target and Newcastle United’s James Milner also in action. Carson went on to win 29 caps at this level in total, although the record is now Milner’s on 46. Nando’s treble 2009 – Fernando Torres bagged a hat-trick as Spain beat New Zealand 5-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in South Africa. Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Albert Riera all also played. More Spaniards on target 2006 - Xabi Alonso grabbed his first senior international goal while winning his 27th cap in Spain’s 4-0 thumping of the Ukraine in a World Cup Finals group game in Leipzig, with future red Fernando Torres also on the scoresheet. Luis García and future red Andriy Voronin also featured. 2008 – Torres netted again as Spain beat Sweden 2-1 in Innsbruck, with David Villa’s late winner ensuring they reached the Quarter-finals of the European Championships as group winners with a game to spare. Meanwhile, future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos played as Greece lost 1-0 to Russia in Salzburg. 2012 – Ex-red Torres bagged a brace as Spain thumped the Republic of Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2012 group game in Gdansk. Ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa and Robbie Keane all also featured, with future red Mario Balotelli also playing that day. On target at the World Cup 2010 – Dirk Kuyt struck as the Netherlands beat Denmark 2-0 in a group game in Johannesburg, with Daniel Agger putting through his own net and future reds coach John Heitinga also in action. Future red Christian Poulsen played his 75th senior international in this game. Future red Joël Matip played for Cameroon as they lost a friendly 1-0 tio Japan in South Africa on the same day. 2014 – Daniel Sturridge and future red Mario Balotelli both scored as Roy Hodgson’s England lost 2-1 to Italy in a group game in Manaus, with the latter bagging his last strike while with AC Milan. Steven Gerrard skippered a team that also included Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling and future red Adam Lallana, while ex-red Gabriel Paletta was on the winning side. Also at the World Cup 2002 - Abel Xavier appeared as a substitute in Portugal’s 1-0 defeat by South Korea in Incheon, winning his twentieth and final cap. Meanwhile, Brad Friedel saved a penalty from Poland’s Maciej Żurawski, his second spot-kick save in consecutive games, as the USA lost 3-1 in Daejeon. Jerzy Dudek did not play. These results ensured that neither Portugal nor Poland qualified for the knock-out stages. 1974 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played his first game at the World Cup Finals as Scotland beat Zaire 2-0 in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. Czech mates at Anfield 1996 - The Czech Republic beat Italy 2-1 in a Euro ‘96 group match at Anfield, with Pavel Nedvěd bagging his first senior international goal. Patrik Berger started the game, later being replaced by Vladimír Šmicer. It was the first time either of them had played in L4. Berger arrived at Anfield only two months later, while his compatriot joined him in another three years. Enrico Chiesa was on the scoresheet for Italy, dad to future red Federico. 2004 – Future red Christian Poulsen featured in a European Championships Finals group game as Denmark held Italy to a goalless draw in Guimarães. 2016 – Ex-red Krisztián Németh played as Hungary beat Austria 2-0 in a group game in Bordeaux. Final caps 2015 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne won his last England cap before moving to Anfield, with Raheem Sterling playing for the last time as a red as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Slovenia 3-2 in a European Championships qualifier in Ljubljana. Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland for the final time as an Internazionale player, scoring in their 2-1 qualifying win in Lithuania. Mohamed Salah won his last cap while on loan at Fiorentina, netting his only goal while with La Viola, as Egypt beat Tanzania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s for the seventh and last time, scoring in a penalty shoot-out as they beat the USA to reach the Semi-final of the World Championships Finals in New Zealand. Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana, Martin Škrtel and future reds Roberto Firmino, Ragnar Klavan and Kostas Tsimikas also represented their countries that day. 2022 - Takumi Minamino won his last cap before leaving Anfield as Japan lost 3-0 to Tunisia in the Kirin Cup Soccer Final in Suita. Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling appeared for England for the final time while with Manchester City in their 4-0 thumping by Hungary in a UEFA Nations League group game at Molineux, with ex-red Ozan Kabak representing Türkiye for the last time as a Schalke 04 player in their 2-0 defeat of Lithuania in the same competition in Izmir. Future red Cody Gakpo netted as the Netherlands beat Wales 3-2 in Rotterdam, with Owen Beck, Caoimhín Kelleher, future reds Wataru Endō and Dominik Szoboszlai, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Harry Wilson all playing for their countries, as Steve Clarke took charge of Scotland. Moving on 2023 – Ex-reds midfielder James Milner agreed to sign for Brighton & Hove Albion on 1st July. He failed to score in twenty appearances in his debut season with the Seagulls, then signing on for another year. On the same day, young keeper Harvey Davies joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, playing 32 senior games. 2013 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren joined Southampton from Olympique Lyonnais for £8.5m after three goals in 102 games since signing from Dinamo Zagreb in January 2010 for an initial €8m. 2007 – Reserves centre-half Danny O’Donnell left Anfield to join Crewe Alexandra for a nominal fee after a successful season-long loan. He had moved up to Melwood from the Academy full-time in the summer of 2005, having skippered the Under-18’s during 2004/05. 1928 – Scottish right-half Jock McNab left the reds to join Queens Park Rangers. He had signed from Bellshill Athletic in November 1919 and helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting six times in 222 reds games. On the same day, forward Jimmy Walsh moved on to Hull City. He had signed from his hometown club Stockport County in May 1922 and netted a brace on his reds bow, bagging a total of 27 goals in his 77 reds games. 2016 – It was confirmed that Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira would sign for SL Benfica on 1st July, with the reds getting a compensation fee of £240,000. He had netted once in eight games since arriving from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £830,000 in January 2012. 2019 – Ex-reds scout Jonathan Woodgate was appointed Head Coach of Middlesbrough, with Robbie Keane joining him as part of the coaching staff. A red is born 1869 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick was born in Blackburn. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. He top-scored with ten goals as they were relegated to the Second Division, before moving on to Southampton in the Southern League. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. Redmen held by Boys 1953 - Billy Liddell was on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1 with Swiss side BSC Young Boys at the Yankee Stadium in New York City. Our cause was probably not helped by having played in Toronto the day before. Tony on a run 1969 - Ex-red Tony Hateley scored in the fifth of all seven games of an FA Tour, grabbing four as England thumped Singapore 9-0. He netted a total of seventeen goals on the tour. Youngsters on the world stage 2005 - Future reds Gabriel Paletta and Nabil El Zhar were both on the winning side in group stage games in the Under-20 World Championship Finals in the Netherlands. Argentina beat Egypt 2-0 in Enschede, while Morocco thumped Honduras 5-0 in Doetinchem. International firsts and last 1989 – Glenn Hysén skippered Sweden while winning his first cap as a reds player in their 6-0 thumping by Denmark in the Dansk Boldspil Union 100th Anniversary Tournament in Copenhagen. 2023 - Naby Keïta captained Guinea while playing his first game since joining SV Werder Bremen as they lost an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-1 to Egypt in Morocco, with Mohamed Salah skippering the victors. On the same day, Sepp van den Berg won his eighth and last cap for the Dutch Under-21’s as they share a goalless draw with Japan Under-22’s in Austria. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo, Virgil van Dijk, future red Ryan Gravenberch and ex-red Gini Wijnaldum all also featured in internationals. More internationals on target 2008 – Harry Kewell struck while captaining Australia to a 3-1 World Cup qualifying win in Qatar. Nabil El Zhar, future reds Luis Suárez and Kolo Touré, and ex-red Rigobert Song all also featured in qualifiers that day. 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf converted from the spot as Senegal beat Lesotho 3-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Salif Diao also featured in the match in Dakar. 2019 – Ex-red Philippe Coutinho struck twice, including once from the spot as Brazil beat Bolivia 3-0 in a Copa América group game in São Paulo, with Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino both also featuring. On the move 2001 - Karl-Heinz Riedle was released by Fulham. He had struck just six times in 35 games for the Cottagers since arriving from Anfield in September 1999. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward David Amoo signed for Carlisle United on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers. He had struck just once in eleven outings for the Prenton Park outfit. 2017 – Midfielder Darren Potter joined Rotherham United from MK Dons on a free transfer, after twelve goals in 263 outings. 2018 – Midfielder Jordan Williams signed for Rochdale, after a successful loan spell. He had only played one senior reds game. 2021 - Spanish keeper Adrián signed a new contract, although he only played one senior game in his third campaign, to add to the 24 appearances he had already made. Also in international action 2021 – Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in a European Championship Finals group game at Hampden Park, with Thiago Alcântara playing in Spain’s goalless draw with Sweden in Seville. 1997 – Future red Mauricio Pellegrino featured for Argentina in their 2-0 defeat of Chile in the Copa América in Bolivia. 1987 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil Unfer-20’s as they beat the USSR Under-21’s 1-0 in Toulon. 1978 – Future reds Joe Corrigan and Alan Kennedy both played for England B as they beat New Zealand 4-0 in Auckland. 1973 – Emlyn Hughes played for England in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Turin.

In rides Crazy Horse 1947 - Emlyn Hughes was born in Barrow-in-Furness. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield after signing from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. God’s rapid-fire hat-trick 1994 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in a five-minute first-half spell as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield, in front of just 30,017 in the first game after the Kop became all seated. 1999 - He also struck as we again beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, with Patrik Berger also on the scoresheet as Dominic Matteo reached a century of League outings for the reds. 1967 - We also played them, going down 2-0 at Highbury. Jon Sammels scored with Tony Hateley putting through his own net. On the way in 2017 – Midfielder Naby Keïta agreed to sign from RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. the following July for £52.75m. He struck eleven times in 129 outings for the reds as he struggled with a succession of injuries, but he managed to help us claim the League title, FA Cup, League Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before departing for SV Werder Bremen in June 2023. Double Latin debutants 2007 - Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and Argentine winger Sebastián Leto both made their reds bows as we thumped Toulouse 4-0 in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield, to progress 5-0 on aggregate. Peter Crouch and skipper Sami Hyypiä both netted before Dirk Kuyt added a late brace as we secured our fiftieth home win in Europe’s premier competition. Before the match, the Z-Cars theme was played in tribute to the recently-murdered Rhys Jones, whose parents and brother were present on the touchline in their Everton shirts, on a day when the city of Liverpool celebrated its 800th birthday. Most recently 2021 – Kai Havertz headed Chelsea ahead at Anfield, but Mohamed Salah equalised from the spot on the stroke of half time, with Reece James sent off for handling in the area as the game ended 1-1. The doc off the mark 1976 – We lost 2-1 at Birmingham City, with David Johnson nabbing his first reds goal. Double centurion 1993 - Ian Rush grabbed his 200th League goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 at Anfield in the Premiership. Jan Mølby netted the other as Mike Marsh played his 101st and final reds game. Dirk the best of Dutch 2006 - Dirk Kuyt was named Dutch Player of the Year, shortly after his £9m move from Feyenoord to Anfield. He had been made their skipper that season, as he scored 25 times in 38 games in all competitions. Javier the champion 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano helped Argentina to claim Olympic gold as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in the Final in Athens. Paraguay had both Emilio Martínez and Diego Figueredo sent off. The new Kemlyn 1963 - We played in front of the new Kemlyn Road cantilever stand for the first time, while part of the Anfield Road terracing was unavailable due to structural work. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest, with Forest’s Bob McKinlay scoring for the reds, the fiftieth time we had benefited from an own goal to date in the League. Bruce at last 1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his final senior international cap as Zimbabwe lost 1-0 in the first leg of a World Cup qualifier in Egypt. Other trebles 1926 - Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring before Dick Forshaw bagged a treble against Manchester United for the second successive season, as we won 4-2 in our season opener at Anfield, with winger Dick Edmed making his reds bow. Frank McPherson bagged a brace for the visitors. 1937 - George Mills scored a hat-trick for Chelsea in their 6-1 thumping of the reds as we started the season badly, the last of his four goals past us. Ted Harston netted our consolation on his reds debut, with left-back Barney Ramsden also making his reds bow. Harry Burgess bagged one of his nine strikes past the reds, with Billy Mitchell and Jimmy Argue also on target. 1943 - Jack Balmer bagged three as we beat Manchester City 4-1 in our opening Wartime League fixture of the season with Cyril Done also on target. 1920 - We also started a new campaign against City, with Tom Miller nabbing a brace and Walter Wadsworth scoring his first reds goal in our 4-2 Anfield victory. Donald McKinlay also struck, with Tommy Browell bagging one of his seven goals against us and Ernest Goodwin also netting. Other debutants 2002 - Salif Diao made his official reds bow in our 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Rovers substitute Corrado Grabbi nabbing a late equaliser after Danny Murphy and John Arne Riise had put us in front, following David Dunn’s opener. 1990 - Roy Keane made his debut in English football as Nottingham Forest lost 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th League game for the reds. Thumping the Mackems 1948 – Billy Watkinson netted his second and last goal for the club with Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer also scoring as we beat Sunderland 4-0 at Anfield. Other birthday boys 1929 - Forward John Evans was born in Tilbury in Essex. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games before joining Colchester United in December 1957, including a goal on his 25th birthday as we lost 3-2 in a Second Division fixture at Derby County, with Louis Bimpson also on target. Jimmy Dunn bagged the last of his four goals against the reds, with Geoff Barrowcliffe and Tommy Powell also scoring. 1993 – Academy defender Jakub Sokolík was born in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. He joined the reds in 2009, signing on as a professional four years later. He was released at the end of the 2013/14 season, signing on with Yeovil Town in June 2014. Rob bows out 1999 - Rob Jones was released by West Ham United, just six weeks after leaving Anfield for one final throw of the dice. He had played 243 times for the reds, famously without notching a goal, before suffering a succession of back problems. In charge 2004 - Ian Rush was appointed Manager of Chester City. He only led them to fourteen victories in 41 games in his one season in charge. 1999 - Steve Clarke took over as Caretaker Manager of Newcastle United after Ruud Gullit’s resignation, although he only took charge of one game, a 5-1 thumping at Manchester United. Other reds games 1982 – Sammy Lee scored a free kick with Phil Neal converting a penalty as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield. 1978 – We lost 1-0 at Sheffield United in a League Cup Second Round tie. 1973 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City. 1971 – We beat Leicester City 3-2 in L4 with Steve Heighway, Kevin Keegan and John Toshack all on target. 1957 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 1-1 draw in a Second Division match at Anfield. Les Massie bagged the first of his four goals against the reds before Alan A’Court equalised. Moving on 2014 – Left-back Jack Robinson was sold to Queens Park Rangers after eleven senior games since making his bow as the reds’ then youngest ever player in May 2010, moving on the same day on loan to Huddersfield Town. 2020 – Ovie Ejaria was sold to Reading after two successful loan spells. On the same day, keeper Shamal George signed for Colchester United having been released by the reds. 2022 – Ex-red loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Fatih Karagümrük on a free transfer from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü, netting once in seven outings while with his fourth Turkish club. Crossing the border 1987 - Reserves centre-forward Alan Irvine was sold to Dundee United for £100,000 after just four appearances from off the bench. He failed to score in seven League games before joining Shrewsbury Town. 1994 - Ex-red Gary Gillespie rejoined Coventry City from Celtic on a free transfer. He could only make four appearances in his second, three-season spell at Highfield Road. Danny on target 2007 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson captained and scored for Scotland Under-17's for the only time, while winning the first of his four caps at this level in their 3-1 tournament defeat by Austria in Villach. In trouble 2019 - Dean Saunders was jailed for ten weeks for refusing to provide a roadside breath test, although he was freed after one day pending an appeal, which he later won. Also in international action 1991 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to the USSR in Oslo. 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in Walsall.

Mo the best 2018 - Mohamed Salah was named the PFA Player of the Year, after his first campaign with the reds that eventually yielded 44 goals in 52 games in all competitions as he helped us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. To Cardiff once more 2006 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Semi-final. John Arne Riise’s free-kick opened the scoring before Luis García extended our lead early in the second half with a sublime volley. Didier Drogba’s header, one of his eleven goals past us, ensured a nervous last twenty minutes, but future red Joe Cole blazed over with the Blues’ only real chance of note as we hung on to reach our thirteenth FA Cup Final. En route to gay Paree 1981 - Howard Gayle came on as a substitute for the injured Kenny Dalglish after just nine minutes and ran the Bayern München defence ragged, before later himself being substituted by Jimmy Case. We held the German champions to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic Stadium, with Ray Kennedy putting us in front with just seven minutes left before Karl-Heinz Rummenigge equalised, to make it through to our third European Cup Final in five years, on away goals after a goalless first meeting. Boss Bob Paisley had called this “our biggest test since Rome”, prior to the game. A first treble 1905 - Forward Sam Raybould became the first reds player to score a hat-trick against Manchester United as we beat them 4-0 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Jack Cox netted the other goal as this victory secured our promotion, with reds’ fans carrying the players on their shoulders after the final whistle in celebration. 1916 - Fred Pagnam also struck three times as we thumped United 7-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Ernie Pinkney and Walter Wadsworth were also on target with Dave Watson netting twice. Held by the Blues 2008 – We took the lead in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final against Chelsea shortly before half-time through Dirk Kuyt, before failing to take a number of other good chances. We suffered a sucker punch in the final seconds of time added on when John Arne Riise headed into his own net. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in four consecutive seasons. 2010 – We also suffered European disappointment, losing 1-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Semi-final at Club Atlético de Madrid, with the reds having to make the long journey to Spain by train following volcanic eruptions over Iceland causing all flights to be grounded. Diego Forlán gave the home side an early lead with one of his four strikes past the reds, with Yossi Benayoun having an equaliser wrongly ruled out for offside. Most recently 2023 – Diogo Jota bagged a brace at Anfield, but relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest twice levelled through ex-red Neco Williams and Morgan Gibbs-White. Mohamed Salah then struck as we won 3-2. Reds farewells 1950 - Winger William Watkinson made his 24th and final reds appearance in our 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth, with keeper Ray Minshull playing for the 31st and last time. Albert Stubbins bagged our consolation as Duggie Reid struck one of his six goals past us, with Jack Froggatt also on target. 1939 - Scottish forward Bill Kinghorn bagged his fourth goal in his nineteenth and final reds game as we were held by Sunderland to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with the legendary Raich Carter netting one of his six goals against the reds as forward John Shafto appeared for the twentieth and last time. 1899 - George Allan struck his 56th and final goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0 in a top-flight match at Anfield, with Tom Robertson nabbing the other. Baggies bouncing 1967 – West Bromwich Albion won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to one of Jeff Astle’s seven goals past the reds as winger Peter Thompson appeared for the 200th time. 2012 – Peter Odemwingie struck the only goal of the game as the Baggies won at Anfield for the first time in exactly 45 years, under the management of ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson. Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt both struck the woodwork before we fell behind. Double red 1969 – We were held to a goalless draw at Coventry City with Alun Evans and City’s Maurice Setters both sent off for fighting. Under twelve thousand 1959 - We hosted our lowest post-war League crowd of only 11,976 as we beat Sc***horpe United 3-0 in the Second Division. Alan Arnell netted his 35th and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell and Fred Morris also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday to the reserves 1956 - Left-back Brian Kettle was born in Prescot. He signed for the reds in May 1973 but only made four senior appearances as his route to the first-team was blocked first by Alec Lindsay, then Joey Jones and Alan Kennedy, and he moved to Wigan Athletic in August 1980. 1983 – Former Finnish reserves striker Daniel Sjölund was born in Marieham. He never made the first team after arriving Anfield from West Ham United in November 2000 as part of the deal that took Rigobert Song in the opposite direction, moving on to Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in January 2004. 1993 - Midfielder Craig Roddan was born in Fazakerley. He joined the Academy from Wigan Athletic in 2007 but was released in the summer of 2014. 2001 – Centre-back Morgan Boyes was born in Chester. He put through his own net while making his senior debut in the 5-0 EFL Cup loss at Aston Villa in December 2019, also featuring in the FA Cup win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield two months later. He moved on to Livingston on a free transfer in January 2022. An eventful friendly for Don 1925 - Scottish left-back Donald McKinlay scored and then replaced Elisha Scott in goal after he was injured at Anfield against Aberdeen. The game ended 1-1. Beating the Blues 1944 - Cyril Done netted a treble, including a penalty, as we beat Everton 4-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Stan Polk also on target. 1893 - We also beat the Blues in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park, with Tom Wyllie bagging the only goal of the game in front of just 10,000 at Bootle’s ground on Hawthorne Road. This was the first ever meeting between the two sides. Some things never change as Everton were denied a penalty and protested a number of decisions made by referee Herbie Arthur, with the ceremony to award the trophy and winners’ medals minted by Bovril having to be abandoned. Mixed fortunes against the other Blues We have twice faced Birmingham City in First Division matches on this day in history. 1933 - Gordon Hodgson grabbed the only goal of the game in L4, with centre–forward Harold Barton playing his hundredth reds game. 1964 - Roger Hunt was on target in a 3-1 defeat at St. Andrews. Tons up 1972 – John Toshack struck twice as we beat Ipswich Town 2-0 at home as Tommy Smith made his 300th League appearance for the reds. 1957 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 300th League game for the reds in our goalless Second Division trip to Bristol Rovers. 1922 – We lost 2-0 at Cardiff City with Jimmy Gill bagging the first of his six goals against the reds, with Len Davies nabbing the first of his seven as keeper Elisha Scott played his hundredth League game for the reds. 1901 – Sam Raybould and Charlie Satterthwaite were on target as we won 2-0 at Sheffield United as inside-right Johnny Walker reached a century of reds outings. Stevie again 2007 - Steven Gerrard was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the fifth of eight times, a record in the Premier League era. Joy against the Potters We have also twice met Stoke City on this day in history. 1935 - Our top-flight meeting at the Victoria Ground ended in a draw, with Berry Nieuwenhuys on the scoresheet and Tommy Sale netting one of his five goals past us. 1961 - We won 3-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis were on target, with Dave Hickson bagging his 38th and last goal for the club. Tony for the only time 1959 - Ex-reds inside-right Tony Rowley won his only senior cap for Wales. Their 4-1 defeat by Northern Ireland in Belfast was enough to hand the Ulster side a share of the British International Championships with England that season. This cap was even more special in that Rowley was a Tranmere Rovers player at the time, then in the Third Division. Welsh Englishman 2001 - John Welsh scored for England Under-16’s as they lost 3-1 to Italy in the European Championships at Bramall Lane, with future red Alberto Aquilani on the winning side. On the same day, future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-21’s in their 3-0 defeat of Romania in the European Championships Finals in Durham. Future reds Rigobert Song and Kolo Touré both played in World Cup qualifying wins on the same day. 2002 - Welsh starred for England Under-19’s as they qualified for the European Championship Finals by beating Lithuania 2-1 at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with future red Jermaine Pennant on target and future reds Glen Johnson and Gary O’Neil also in action. Aquilani featured for his country again, playing for the Under-18’s as they beat Poland 2-0. Stan the Irish Villain 1998 - Steve Staunton won his 74th cap, and final one in his first spell as an Aston Villa player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 2-0 to Argentina in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. On the same day, Abel Xavier won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and fifth in total, as Portugal lost 3-0 to England in a friendly at Wembley. Paul Ince and Michael Owen both featured. Meanwhile, future red Nicolas Anelka made his senior international debut in France’s goalless draw in Sweden and future red Vladimír Šmicer netted as the Czech Republic won 3-1 in Slovenia. Also representing their countries that day were Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Øyvind Leonhardsen and future reds Markus Babbel, Dietmar Hamann, Stéphane Henchoz, Sami Hyypiä and Jari Litmanen. Richard devalued 2008 – Ex-reserves defender Richard Money resigned as Manager of Walsall having failed to receive assurances over transfer funds. He had led them to 44 victories in his 103 games as they won the League Two title in his first full season in charge. He joined Newcastle United as Academy Director two months later. 1982 – Money left the reds to sign for Luton Town after seventeen first-team outings with the reds, having joined from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980. First cap 1995 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Brøndby IF player, and 28th in total as the USA lost 1-0 to Belgium in a friendly in Molenbeek. A record for Jameo 2007 - Ex-red David James broke the all-time Premiership clean sheets record with his 143rd shut-out as Portsmouth held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in the Midlands. Other reds games 2001 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield with Emile Heskey opening the scoring. Willem Korsten equalised before the break with Patrik Berger putting us ahead from the spot with Robbie Fowler also on the scoresheet. 1992 – Ian Rush netted our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest after Teddy Sheringham had scored the first of his seven goals past us. 1978 – We bet Norwich City 3-0 in L4. John Ryan put through his own net with David Fairclough on target either side of half time. Signing on 1978 - Reserves defender Alan Harper signed as a professional. However, he never played a senior reds game, later enjoying greater success across the park. 2021 – Centre-half Tom Clayton signed a new contract. He can also play in midfield, regularly turning out for the Under-23’s. Also in international action 1944 – Matt Busby captained Scotland as they drew 2-2 with England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. 2002 – Conal Platt played for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s as they beat Portugal 1-0 in Viseu to clinch the tournament in which they were competing. 2004 - John Paul 'Joxer' Kelly featured as the Irish Under-17’s lost a friendly 1-0 in Turkey. 2008 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-19’s as they beat Estonia 1-0 in Tallinn. 2019 – Bobby Duncan and Curtis Jones both featured as England Under-18’s lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic in a friendly in Dubai.
