This was only the third time in nine years we had lost a home League game after taking the lead, with Arsenal the victors on each occasion. 2020 – We lost 2-0 at Chelsea in the FA Cup Fifth Round, having made seven changes from our preceding game, which was our first League defeat of the season. This was the first time we had been ranked Europe’s best since 1985. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was sent a letter following a telephone conversation to confirm his appointment as Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our only boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land.
