After being in a foul mood after the Hull game - despite the fact we played quite well overall - to bouncing along yesterday at being TOPOFTHELEAGUE it was an odd weekend. 2 weeks ago, none of the 'big 4' won & we felt like we'd blown a great chance by drawing with WHU, already in the knowledge that the others had dropped points. This week as they knew we'd dropped points it was a bittersweet - pissed off we had, but we got out of jail...

So - almost halfway in, top, how confident are people?

EDIT - stupid poll

Ive gone for 3rd too, behind United and Chelsea. Just a horrible feeling its going to be like last season where we regretted a few results. I think we can win it but dont think we will.

1st. I really don't think people have been watching United and Chelsea. We've been poor this season but they've been worse. Chelsea are not the side they were, they give sides a chance with the way they play and they seem to have built their side around Deco who is inconsistent. United's midfield is really weak, Ronaldo now plays as a forward more or less so for most of the season they've been playing a midfield 3 of Carrick, Scholes/Fletcher and Park. Berbatov has really unsettled the chemistry that won them the league last season and Ferguson still hasn't figured out what his best side is.

Our problems can be largely fixed by the return of Torres to the team and one or two good results. Their's are more deep set.

First.

Why not? We've got it in us. We can match the other results. We can beat the other contenders. We've got a big squad, if we get the best out of them it's ours.

Think we'll run out of steam at the end of the season, if we are in the mix come March/April, it would be first time for most of the squad being involved in a championship battle, pressure builds, strong and experienced minds win through. That's why you still got to put Chelsea and the Mancs favourites ahead of us.

It's ridiculous, but I can't bring myself to actually vote. I think we've got an absolutely fantastic chance of winning the league this year. As Aggermania has pointed out, we're top of the league, and still haven't clicked. And we've been without Torres for most of the year.

Chelsea have the ability to play better football than they did under Maureen, but aren't nearly as clinical and efficient. People on here go mad when we play players who fans think are substandard, but Utd have spent much of the season playing the likes of Park and Fletcher, who I think are worse than our fringe players. Hopefully the Tokyo trip and having a backlog of games will take it out of them. And with all this debate about Keane, lets not forget that Berbatov has managed the same number of league goals (1 against each of Stoke and WBA), and it's not as if Nani and Anderson - 30 million worth of signings have exactly set the world alight.

If Torres stays fit, I think we'll be right up there, and could well win it. Without Torres, - or if he keeps having a stop-start season - I think it'll be 2nd or 3rd.

I like the fact that we're still top and yet the bookies and 'experts' (aka idiots like Merson, Bryan Robson etc) are just waiting for us to slip up...

Gone for 2nd as i think Chelsea will win it with their depth in squad.

That said we could as easily finish anywhere in the top 3, if we are the first team to go on a solid run of wins. Getting Torres and Skrtel fully fit by the 2nd week of Jan would be huge for our team.

hopefully when torres returns, maybe we will see a return to the formation that brought us so much success the 2nd half of last season.....

----------------reina-------------

arbeloa--carra---agger/skrt--aurellio

--------masch--alonso----------

kuyt--------gerrard-------reira--

--------------torres---------------

If we can keep that same line up for every game, staying free of injuries, suspensions and crazy rotation.......THEN i think we can win it, the above side is good enough to beat anyone.

spot on summary, my thoughts entirely. united are going to have a hell of a fixture backlog to handle as well and they don't have the squad depth of recent years.

Refuse to vote :bleh: but I really think we have a good a chance as any. Something isn't clicking at Chelsea at the moment, Man U seem to be suffering from a drop in Ronaldo's passion, and Arsenal have been too inconsistent, both in the Premiership and CL.

FFS, lets not overlook the fact that is almost Christmas and we are top without having an out and out striker in the team for practically whole of the season so far. Just imagine where Chelsea would be without Anelka's goals. The main reason for my optimism is that if Torres comes back fit and continues the form he showed last season, there is no reason why we cannot compete until the end. Add to that Robbie Keane, who despite his form so far this season is a proven Premiership scorer, and who should be much happier playing behind Torres.

I've been doing some working out.

After a lot of talk in the summer about needing 90+ points to win the league

I think 85 points will win us the league easily, 80-85 will probably win it, even 75-80 I wouldn't rule out.

We currently have a maximum points total of 101

Chelsea have 100

United have 98

That means, Chelsea have to drop just 15 points from a possible 63 and United to drop 13 points from a possible 66 to beat us if we finish on 85 points or more.

To get 85 points we need 47 more points from 21 games.

That equals something like 14 wins 5 draws 2 losses

To get 80 points we need 42 more points from 21 games

That equals something like 12 wins 6 draws 3 losses
