Of all the players brendan has let go of.

Strange as it seems I reckon wee Jay could have stayed and done a faithful job in around 12-15 games per season...could have helped with rotation

Dirk Kuyt. I f***ing love Dirk Kuyt. (TBH, was probably the right time)

Would be happier with Borini in the squad this year.

He's doin alright he is - scored 17 in 56 last season, 8 in 27 this season.

Would have much preferred keeping Borini to Aspas too.

Did Maxi leave under Rodgers? Was thinking the other day he'd be great in this team

And him - but I think both Kuyt and Maxi left under Kenny, no?

So far, just Borini then.

Among the permanent exits, given what we have and what we need, on paper Downing. Towards the end he was putting in some useful performances as an LWB, which would fit our desired team shape and the type of football we want. However, with his age and wages, we were likely to be overpaying for what we were going to get from him in the future, especially when we're aware of what he's capable of in a negative sense. If he were younger with a salary to match, we would be looking for a Downing circa 2013. But there was no guarantee against a return to the Downing of previous years, so it was a good decision to get rid when we did.

Among non-permanent exits who don't look to have a future here, the player I'd really like to see succeed is Robinson, partly because he plays in a position where we've been weak for some time.

Among players who are still with us but who look to be phased out, I feel most for Kelly, whose once eyecatching potential has been ruined by non-stop injuries.

He's exactly the opposite of what this teams mentality is built on. He used to annoy me even being on the bench. Just the thought that he might come on, take a step forward, stop turn and pass it back was irritating me massively.

On the last form they showed before being let go, the most useful player we've got rid of is Downing given his recent performances and the weakness we have in that position. The overwhelming minus against him was the knowledge that he could be astonishingly mentally weak, and with his age and the high end wage we had to pay and the ever present threat of Downing returning to his infuriating earlier form, he had to go. For me, there was another reason (he let down Dalglish), but that's not really a rational reason and more of a personal dislike.

On paper Reina is the best of the non-permanent exits we've let go. However, his ball playing skills apart, Mignolet has been a decent replacement. So we haven't missed Reina as much as we've missed an LB. I'm really hoping that Robinson can be one of these LBs, especially as Flanagan has shown that early missteps can be corrected if you're young enough and have the right attitude.

I agree with Romario - whatever technical uses Downing would have had for us this season, his mentality is the polar opposite of what we're building here, and I think he has a negative effect from that standpoint. I think there are four major factors in player recruitment which are ability, injury record, age and character. If you were scoring all four of them from 0-5 Downing would rank as a zero for character, which makes him unsuitable for a club of our size and pressure.

A player like him is much happier at a club with less pressure to perform, definitely a 'big fish in a small pond' type.

What is a joy to behold now, is the mentality of the players; we've got incredible work rate and loads of attitude and that stems from Suarez and Sturridge. Those two have the attitude of winners and although that can come across as arrogance sometimes, they work their balls off for the team and deliver week in week out so nobody can criticise. They just have the mentality of win at all costs, and Suarez shoving everyone back to the half way line after Coutinho's goal the other night says it all.

I'd agree on Maxi would have been the best fit for this team - both in terms of technical ability and attitude.

He and Kuyt were both sold by Rodgers according to the records.

Maxi and Kuyt both left because they felt underplayed under Dalglish, one of the reasons why I dislike Downing (Henderson gets a pass because of his age). Downing was given an extend run of selection to build his confidence, and he did nothing with it until he was dropped, and later on when he was criticised by Rodgers. This is unforgiveable in an experienced professional who should be setting the example for the younger team members.

I'd rather nail my balls to a splintered plank than have Downing back. Most over paid s***house we ever signed I think. And there's been a few.

Exactly.

I have infinitely more sympathy with players who just aren't good enough (e.g. Aly) or even those who are lazy (e.g. Moses) rather than a sh*thouse like Downing.

I'm one of the few who think there's a player in Shelvey.

I can see why he's gone, and know he can be shocking, as well as us having a better alternative in both Allen and Henderson, but I sort of wish he was still here. But then I was a fan of Spud (must like my slow midfielders!)

Although unlikely particularly "useful" as per the thread title

Murphy was many times better than Shelvey will ever be.

Shelvey could sometimes pass well and shoot well but he could also be lazy or throw a crazy challenge in and give the ref the opportunity to send him off .

He could have his moments but they were all to rare I feel . Too inconsistent .
