This is the kind of win we need more of. We were good without being great in the first half, and then very poor in the 2nd half, but held on despite not playing well. Makes a nice change from the playing well and not winning / losing of last season.

 

Clattenberg had an awful game. Glad it didn't cost us. Twice gave free kicks in dangerous positions when our players cleanly won the ball, and that was the clearest of clear pens at the end.

There's an argument to say Villa would have been more dangerous in that second half playing on the counter into space so we did the right thing conceding ground. However we were awful when in possession.

 

Cissokho is an interesting signing as he's more physicality than technique unlike the rest of Rodgers' signings.

That about sums it up nicely.

 

Good performance from Toure vs Benteke, and Mignolet did well when called upon. Excellent goal for Sturridge too. Considering we're meant to have padded out the squad with the early signings of the transfer window, resorting to putting a left back in midfield and an unfit Joe Allen on to offer more presence is baffling. 3 more points in the bag though and still more than enough time to make a few additions. Luckily the lads had 45 minutes off too so they shouldn't be too knackered for the next game.

gerrard, lucas, hendo all had moments of giving the ball away cheaply in that 2nd half.

 

They were suberb first half, didnt try and force it, just played it simple, moved, forced the fullbacks to move, brought the centre halfs into it, kept the ball moving until villa were pegged in their own half. 2nd half PANIC. I'd like to think its cos "villa have such a young side" and took advantage when sturridge gets tired and stops chasing as much as he does in the first half.
