Man Utd @ Anfield

Firstly, I read that the 2 stands will hold up JUSTICE wilst the Kop will hold up cards to read TRUTH with the Anfield Rd End showing 96. I'm not sure about a minutes applause.

Secondly, Henderson 'should' have done his chances no harm last night. He hs the energy and style to play in the managers midfield. Him and Allen together and Gerrard pushed on (meaning) Shelvey would be sacrificed. However, I don't see him starting.

Anyway, we're fu*&ing doing this !!

You're advocating the dropping of Jonjo Shelvey ?? Leave the room now. Come back, and start again.....

Did you not see his impact from the bench last night ?

Seriously, we could do with Hendersons energy in there and Joe Allen is no statue. Push Gerrard higher up and around Scholes/Carrick and save his bursts of energy for when he can do damage, he's also useful in the air if Sterling gets some crosses in.

But in any event, this isnt a Gerrard driven agenda. Given Utds propensity to widen the pitch and break with speed AND if our full backs are not going to be inhibited in carrying out our game plan the Henderson will cover alot of grass. Wont happen mind.

Shelvey has been good all season and should be starting on Sunday. Utd are piss in midfield, Gerrard and Shelvey are too dynamic for the likes of Scholes. Henderson is a bit too safe if you're playing Joe Allen as well.

I'd have Allen with Shelvey and Henderson behind them holding. 4-1-2-3, with Gerrard, Suarez and Raheem as a front three.

I'm worried about our defending though, we've looked wide open in pretty much every game this season. (although West Brom the sending off and being behind contributed).

I actually don't feel as wound up for this as normal. It'll be a good test of the team, and we'll learn a bit about Rodgers as well I think.

Pepe

Kelly - Srktel - Agger - Johnson

Allen

Gerrard - Shelvey

Sterling - Borini - Suarez

Would be shocked if it is any different.

I'm really looking forward to Lucas coming back and Sahin getting up to speed as our midfield will be stupidly strong then and I would never again play Gerrard as part of the sitting two, he needs to play higher up or as part of the front three for me.

I dont think we will see Shelvey and Gerrard in the same area of the pitch if both start.

Gerrard would be deeper alongside Allen with Shelvey more advanced. I think we have seen Rodgers gravitate more to this system in midfield in the last few games and I think he will keep it up for this game considering the opposition.

a 2 and a 1 rather than a 1 and a 2 (I'm doing the finger movements a la Brenden)

Yeah, it's a decent shout, but we're well stocked in midfield and Gerrard, Allen and Shelvey looks plenty strong.

I look at it like this, I prefer a Allen-Henderson duo than Gerrard-Allen.

If Gerrard is squeezed out then the knock on would be him taking Shelvey's place in reality.

We could play Gerrard right up top. Him to the right, and Sterling to the left, of Suarez.

would much rather he did this, dropping in to help out the midfield as and when, than start deep, with a disciplined-midfielder-as-part-of-a-three-role being forced on him

because although he can play deep in a three (he can play anywhere) he doesn't actually ever give a 90 minute performance of the discipline required in today's unforgiving tactical environment in a deep position

My biggest concern re Sunday (apart from our lack of finishing ability!) is how susceptible we are to quick counter attacks, its a Manu speciality.

With that in mind I would rather we have 2 holding than 1, I expect those two will be Allen & Gerrard with Shelvey pushing up.

It would have been good to see Henderson & Allen but I doubt he will play after last night, on last nights showing Sahin is not up for holding and appears to lack pace to play higher up the pitch (though that maybe fitness related).

I'm not a big fan of Gerrard playing for us, he seems great there for England, but I would much rather him push on for us behind the striker and helping out in the middle when needed. Would rather we play Allen and Sahin/Henderson there with a straight choice of Gerrard or Shelvey for the ACM role - Stevie would be great as part of the front three too.

Allen, Henderson and Shelvey in midfield, Gerrard in the front three.

I'll go with this for a number of reasons...

the first is to pick up on what was said on TAW about Kelly and Johnson... we weaken two positions by not playing johnson in his absolute best position. We can have a great right back, and work within our limitations at left back, or we can be average on both. I go for the former and ask whoever is LB - Jose, Downing, Robinson to step up.... the same applies to the Lucas role. If Allen is 50% better further forward - as Rodgers says - then let's maximise his potential where he is most effective as I don't think the margin between Allen in the pivot role and Henderson in the same is as big a difference. Henderson can do a very good job there, and Allen can be even more influential further forward.

second is that we waste Gerrard there.. the argument about Suarez up front is that this is where he does the most damage. The same applies to Gerrard. He is our most accomplished finisher. His presence causes space for others, and his mentality is to look to attack. If he's going to play 1 in 3 Hollywood balls that stick, make them in the final third, not across the middle third..

There are caveats though and we might see these have an influence on Sunday

One is that Sahin might be playing the Shelvey role if we are looking to pass them around until Shelvey provides a more explosive presence from the bench

The other is that I like a the idea of a front three with say Gerrard and Suarez causing havoc behind a pivot number 9 (geez I think Andy could have done this, but anyway...). In this set up Henderson would sit, Allen would pass, Johnson and Downing would bomb up and down flanks, Sahin would feed the front three... this works if the front 3 play close together. The surprise for me has been to see how far apart Rodgers has set up the front 3. On sunday, we may need to keep that width to stop their full backs bombing forward and effectively killing ours by going two on one with their wide men. so, in that system asking Gerrard to play in a wide 3 may not work...

with that in mind then I can see why, on Sunday at any rate.. he may go with Henderson, Allen, Gerrard behind a front three. I think Shelvey's position is at the front of the three and actually we are weaker if he, and not any combination of Allen and Henderson, is in one of the other two positions...

the final variable if the fullbacks are to attack is to support our fullbacks by playing a 2-1 formation in the middle rather than a 1-2

i would love us to stick as closely as possible to how we want to play and use Allen as the variable, as he is intelligent enough to do this. He either sits in with the holding midfielder, protecting the defence who allow one fullback, but not both, to go forward, or he realises he doesn't need to help babysitting and plays just in front of the holding midfielder... let's maximise our strengths...

So I'd go

----------------------Pepe

---------------Skrtl-------------Agger

Johnson---------------------------------Downing

---------------Henderson----Allen

---------------------Shelvey

--------Gerrard-------------Sterling

--------------------Suarez
