Pepe Reina insists Rafa Benitez's Liverpool project is still very much on course as he looks to commit his long-term future to the Reds.

Benitez revealed in an interview with Liverpoolfc.tv on Friday that Reina could soon be rewarded with a new deal.

After almost five years at Anfield, the Spain international is as happy as ever - and he is adamant the boss is building something special despite mixed results this season.

"My aim is to get a new contract in the future and I want to be here for many years. Apparently the club wants the same," Reina told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It's already my fifth season here and that says it all, really. One of my daughters is a Scouser. I have some friends here and my wife and kids are happy. I have every reason to stay longer and of course I will.

"Titles are what we are all here for. As a Liverpool player, you have to have these ambitions. Trophies are the most important thing, and the most important one is probably the Premier League.

"Rafa Benitez is building something special here. He proved that when he came here - the club was one thing and now it's something totally different. We have grown up and we can still grow up a little bit more."

The 3-1 defeat at Fulham on Saturday was Liverpool's fifth loss of the league campaign, a stat which has left them nine points behind leaders Chelsea.

But with 81 points still to play for, Reina is confident the Reds can yet mount a serious title charge.

"It's not even close to being over," said the Spaniard, who has made 221 appearances since joining from Villarreal in 2005.

"We have to go game by game. Now we must focus on Lyon, which is massive, and after that Birmingham is a must-win game."

Reina was the man who orchestrated a group huddle before Liverpool's victory over Manchester United a week ago.

He believes such spirit will be key to getting the Reds back on course over the coming weeks.

"All of us have to keep everyone else's head up," said the 27-year-old.

"In weak moments, strong people have to appear. I want to be one of them and support my teammates if they need it.

"The key is to stay together and not read the press. Belief is the word we need to use the most - belief in ourselves and our teammates.

"We were a bit unlucky on Saturday. We didn't play as bad as at other times. It was not even close to our worst game.

"It's a tough moment but we have to stick together and try to sort things out on the pitch and in every single training session. We have pride in wearing this shirt and we have to defend it until the end.

"Any defeat hurts someone with ambition and someone who is hungry for titles. But it doesn't matter how many times you fall down - what matters is how many times you get up and keep trying to be the best.

"That's what we have to do now. We have to go back to our principles, sort out the problems we're having and go back to being the Liverpool everyone wants."

Aint that the truth.

Thank f*** for Pepe. He's not far off being my favourite current player, especially compared to all the sicknotes we've got.

Good stuff.

Has been a lot of talk/people worrying about him wanting off at the end of the season and he really would leave a massive hole, so lets hope that the deal gets signed - even if it does mean a lower transfer budget!

Pepe is a world class player who is 100% committed to this club and has a fantastic attitude. There's nothing not to love!

He is spot on here, we all just need to stick together through the injuries and get what we can. Finger pointing at individual players and putting pressure on the manager is completely counter productive.

Incidentally 'he's lost the players' is one of my most hated football phrases. Its a b*llocks excuse to advocate a manager being sacked; how does a manager 'lose the players' exactly? It doesn't happen.

Its the kind of thing muppet ex players like Whelan and Houghton say in the press because they're too f*cking thick to come up with any proper reasons of their own.

read somewhere that we're trying to offload Babel to Ajax for 6m to finance Pepe's new contract

Aye, someone on TLW claims that the deal is done but that Rafa won't see the money as they're going to contract extentions.

Really is a sad state of affairs if it's true.

He is now up there with Torres for me in terms of turning me gay:

I'D DIE FOR LIVERPOOL SAYS PEPE REINA

PEPE Reina has promised there'll be no mass desertion of Anfield's sinking ship if Liverpool's catastrophic season gets any worse.

Rafa Benitez's men are facing the humiliation of Europa League football following their midweek woe in Lyon.

And ahead of tomorrow's clash with Birmingham City, their prospects of retaining their place amongst the Euro elite are looking grim after five Premier League defeats.

Failure to finish in the top four is sure to lead to fresh speculation about an Anfield exodus involving Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano.

They know their place is in the Champions League.

But Reina wants to pledge his long-term future to Liverpool no matter what the rest of the season holds and is sure others will stick by the deals they signed a year ago.

Commitment

"People talk all the time about bringing in more big signings but I see a squad here of 25 good players who all want to be at Liverpool," said Reina.

"My commitment to Liverpool is 100 per cent.

"I would die for that Liverpool shirt. I think the club loves me and I feel the same, no matter what the situation. I can't say any more than that.

"Nobody has offered me a new contract yet but it is my wish to sign so we'll see what happens when we talk.

"I don't want to even think about not being in the Champions League. If that's what happens, okay we'll have to think about that next season.

"But I remain optimistic about the reaction of this team.

"What we need is to pull the strings together.

"I don't even think about the top four. I think only about winning trophies. We know we have to start winning games again starting on Monday.

"Before we can do anything else we must think of winning the next game and take it step by step. There's no point worrying about where we will be in April at this stage of the season because what we need is a win

More money lost from the January transfer budget.

It's terrible that that was almost the first thing that crossed my mind too. Contracts seem to come round so quick these days, are we going to keep selling players just to hold on to key players like Reina??? Frightening.

Anyhow, fair play to Reina, he's a class act.

Cant forgive him for that 3rd goal in the derby about 2000 years ago. He's a clown.

Even Andy Gray thinks that he's a good keeper! Pepe must be really good, then. :D

Who was the pundit who said that Pepe was a bit too short for a goalkeeper, when we initially got him? He reasoning to Pepe initially flapping at corners and freekicks seemed to be that his hands werent long enough to gather them in or something. Bloody, weird that was. Some former footballer on ESPN Asia.

from a phil mcnulty q&a on bbc today

"Which goalkeeper has impressed most this season?"

Liverpool's Pepe Reina. Beachball incident at Sunderland aside, he is the best in the Premier League. Reliable, intelligent, consistent. He has surpassed Chelsea's Petr Cech in my opinion and is in a different league to other English goalkeepers.

About b***** time someone in the media realised this.

If there has been one small positive thing about our defensive woes this season, its that the amount of work Reina has been getting and how well he's done has led to a lot of people outside our club see just how good Reina is.

I think before this season we all knew how good he was, but he was so well protected the work he did went a bit unnoticed. In fact people only seemed to take notice of him on the very rare occasion he made an error.

Wouldn't swap Pepe for any other keeper in the world. Absolutely magnificent this season, and a wonderful attitude. Saw that interview with him the other day where he said he'd 'die for the Liverpool shirt'.

What can I say to that - legend. The words you want to hear from every one of your best players.
