I left my job last April, became a self employed Green and Sustainable IT Consultant and general Project Manager. Started off well enough, dropped off alot in the Autumn, at Christmas I got an evening and weekend job at Sainsbury's to get us through - then second week of January this year it just went BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Phone was off the hook all week with various offers for work, self employed and contracted, though I see them as the same really in my line of work. I turned the first offer down on the Monday, but they rang back on the Friday with a much improved offer I really couldn't turn down even though I felt the work was a bit of a step back. Got me head down and a monthly rolling contract was renewed to 3 monthly instead as they wanted to keep me on for the project, this was then extended again until 25th of July ahead of schedule, because they wanted to ensure that I complete this project. They have explained that they cannot guarantee me any more work after that date, but they are trying to find money in the budgets of future projects to shoe horn me in. The agent I have had to use for this company has said that they really like me and have given great reports back to him. If they can't keep me on, he already has other work coming up that wants to recommend me for. So, as mentioned before, it would appear that if your good\well liked, work is not a problem, but it is still a bit scary not knowing if you will get another contract... I am also doing it as a sole trader which means I can claim loads back!
