StevieC Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 From the BBC gossip column: American star Freddy Adu, who once had a trial at Manchester United, is considering a move to Hull City after the Portuguese side Belenenses told the 20-year-old he can look for other employers. I can't think of anyone else so hyped who turned out to be so mediocre. Le Tallec (although he had his moments)? Cherno Samba? It's some fall from grace to be being the next Pele to then being the next in Phil 'Phil Brown' Brown's 'biggish name almost comes to Hull' plans.

Isn't he supposed to be in his mid-20s?
CarraLegend Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 He can join the other crappy American superstar they signed.
Stevie H Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 brasil's denilson would run adu close in the hyped-but-ultimately-crap stakes. cobi jones. there's another hugely over-hyped american player.
Raj Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 nii lampety. supposed to be the best young player in the world at Anderlecht. signed for Coventry and have no clue where he ended up afterwards
johngibo YPC Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 cobi jones. there's another hugely over-hyped american player. Don't remember Cobi Jones being that hyped really. Although he was possibly expected to do better over here than he didAdu was just bigger than all the kids in his age group. You can't get along on that forever. Especially if you are older than you say you are in the first place!
Snookie Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 He can join the other crappy American superstar they signed. If you listened to Sean Wheelock talking about him he's a combination of Drogba and Torres. If you watch him, he's a cross between Heskey and Jo.
Walrus Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Who? Altidore? Think he's ok, nothing special. Has he been hyped up also?
Hassony Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 If you listened to Sean Wheelock talking about him he's a combination of Drogba and Torres. If you watch him, he's a cross between Heskey and Jo. He keeps saying that signing for hull proves that he was right about him in the first place!!! he also thinks that donavan can get in the england team

Especially if you are older than you say you are in the first place! Dont remember much talk about Jones either, maybe over in the US there was? But Adu was to be the next Pele. Talk about him going to all sorts of top clubs from the age of 13 or 14

PhilM Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 nii lampety. supposed to be the best young player in the world at Anderlecht. signed for Coventry and have no clue where he ended up afterwards Lamptey played for PSV after Anderlecht and signed over to an agent who sold him to Villa because he got the biggest cut from the transfer. Big Ron never played him and he suffered a nervous breakdown after the death of his child.

Oh – and Lamptey lost 2 children…can’t image the heartbreak there.

Nebraska Red Posted January 4, 2010 Posted January 4, 2010 Freddy Adu is a good footballer who got very bad advice. he was hyped up beyond belief by idiots over here who know little about the European game. he should never have left the MLS when he did, he was too young and inexperienced to ever get a decent chance at a European club. he will not get regular footy at Hull and would be better suited coming back to the USA, or playing somewhere in Central America.
Stevie H Posted January 5, 2010 Posted January 5, 2010 anyone know how much influence nike had on adu's hype? they've been desperate for an american footballer to be a world star for ages now and they threw him a big endorsement contract when he was about 14 didn't they?
PhilM Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 At the same time though, Ferguson made loads of public quotes about how promising he thought Adu was and he had a load of trials at United, so presumably either he did look like a really promising player at that age, or clubs were tempted by the massive publicity they would have got, not to mention the business relationship with Nike.
Sir Tokyo Sexwale Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 'American' like Navratolva? Wasn't he born in Nigeria? I remember around the time the Mancs were sniffing around he 'came out' as a Chelsea fan apparently
Rory Fitzgerald Posted January 6, 2010 Posted January 6, 2010 Freddy Adu is not only 20yrs of age - that guy pre-dates the internet - in fact when the first message was posted on the world wide web, it was about Freddy Adu !
