An Anfield farewell 1996 - Ian Rush played his final reds game at Anfield, with Stan Collymore scoring the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game. FA Cup semi-finals We have twice played FA Cup Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1963 - We lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Hillsborough, with Mike Stringfellow heading in the winner, the first of his five goals against the reds, and Gordon Banks keeping the reds at bay. Winger Kevin Lewis made his 82nd and final reds appearance that day. 1977 - We beat Everton 3-0 at Maine Road in a replay, to keep on course for the treble. Our goals came from a Phil Neal penalty, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy that day. Both sides also had strong penalty claims turned down. Title blow 2014 – We lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield to deal our title chances a major blow. The visitors were time-wasting from the first minute as we felt the absence of the suspended Jordan Henderson. Steven Gerrard slipped at the end of the first half to allow Demba Ba a clear run on goal, and he slipped the ball past Simon Mignolet. We failed to break down the Blues’ blanket defence, with Willian nabbing a stoppage time second, the first of his four goals past us. Iago Aspas made his fifteenth and final reds appearance, from the bench with future red Mohamed Salah and ex-red Fernando Torres both featuring for the visitors. On the same day, Luis Suárez was named PFA Player of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings. He was also included in the Team of the Year, alongside Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and future red Adam Lallana. This was Gerrard’s eighth and last appearance in this list, a record in the Premier League era. 2024 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at West Ham United as our title challenge unravelled further. Jarrod Bowen headed the Hammers in front before the break, with Andy Robertson levelling shortly after half time. We took the lead when a Cody Gakpo effort bounced off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomáš Souček and keeper Alphonse Areola before finding the back of the net. However, Michail Antonio scored his sixth and most recent goal against the reds to secure a point. Happy birthdays 1990 - Defender Martin Kelly was born in Whiston. He made his senior bow as a sub in our Champions League win at PSV Eindhoven in December 2008, striking once in 62 reds games before joining Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1904 - Right-back Bob Done was born in Runcorn. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games following his arrival from his hometown side in April 1926. He left for Reading for £150 in May 1935. 1873 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson was born in Sutton, St Helens. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. 1959 – Academy Director Frank McParland was born in Liverpool. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999 he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. Gérard Houllier later gave him a scouting role before Rafael Benítez made him Joint Chief Scout, moving to Bolton Wanderers as General Manager in July 2007, although he only remained there three months. He returned to Melwood in May 2009, moving up to be Director of Academy and Player Development two years later. He left the club again in November 2013. 2007 – Keeper Kornel Miściur was born in Scarborough to Polish parents. He joined the Academy from Hull City in the summer of 2023, turning pro in October 2024. Another title disappears from view 2002 - Michael Owen made his 150th League appearance as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to a Gus Poyet goal. It was our first defeat in fifteen League games and made winning the title a near impossibility. This was also Jari Litmanen’s 43rd and final game in a reds shirt. Meanwhile, a Neil Mellor brace sent the Under-19’s into the Final of the National Play-offs, as we overcame Nottingham Forest 2-1, to set up a two-legged tie with Arsenal. These goals took the boy Mellor to 44 goals for the season. On the same day, future Anfield star Anthony Le Tallec was on target for Le Havre as the French outfit were promoted into the top division by beating Laval 4-1. Thumping the Geordies 2013 - Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson struck twice each, with Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini also on target as we won 6-0 at Newcastle United, with Mathieu Debuchy sent off for the home side late on. In the best team 2008 - Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and ex-red David James were all named in the PFA Team of the Year. 2003 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was voted into the PFA Team of the Year, having kept fifteen clean sheets in the League for Blackburn Rovers. Up and down 1895 - We lost a Test Match 1-0 to Bury at Ewood Park that relegated us after just one season in the top flight. Robert Neill made his reds bow in this game. He was possibly our shortest ever centre-half, standing at just five foot four inches. Also debuting were keeper John Whitehead and forward John Cleland, who played his only senior reds game while on loan from Edinburgh side St. Bernard’s, while outside-left John Drummond made his eighteenth and final appearance. Bury keeper Archie Montgomery was sent off late on for kicking out at Harry Bradshaw. This was William Barclay’s last game in charge of the side. 1896 – John McKenna managed the reds for the final time as we lost another Test Match, going down 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground. However, previous results were enough to ensure our promotion. Milestone games 1908 - We played our 500th League game, beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season thanks to a Ronald Orr brace, with Billy Hibbert bagging one of his thirteen goals against the reds. We ended the season in eighth position. 1985 – Alan Hansen played his 400th reds game as we drew 0-0 at Ipswich Town. 2022 – Jordan Henderson featured in the UEFA Champions League for the fiftieth time as we beat Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of our Semi-final at Anfield, on our way to reach the Final for the tenth time. The score was level at the break, with Pervis Estupiñán deflected a Henderson cross into his own goal before Sadio Mané double our lead. Sam’s last 1912 – Forward Sam Gilligan bagged his sixteenth and final reds goal in the second minute of our 1-0 top-flight victory at Oldham Athletic. Disaster in North London 1935 - Willie Evans scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur as they trounced us 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our consolation while forward Sam English played his fiftieth and final reds game. George Hunt struck one of his five goals past us, with Len Bolan also on the scoresheet. Bill yet again 1903 - Left-half Bill Goldie played his 174th and final reds game, actually his 129th consecutive reds appearance, and 119th straight game in the League, as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in our last game of the season, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Cox. Left-back John Glover and inside-right George Livingstone both played their last reds games. For Razor 1991 - A testimonial match for Ray Kennedy was staged at Highbury. A reds team beat Arsenal 3-1, with Jan Mølby, David Speedie and Peter Beardsley on the scoresheet. A treble for Jimmy 1931 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall grabbed a hat-trick as we were beaten 8-4 by Yeovil & Petters United at their Huish Park Stadium in a friendly, with Cyril Done nabbing our other goal. First and last times with the armband 1982 - Phil Thompson skippered England for the sixth and final time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. Joe Corrigan, ex-red Joey Jones, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Ian Rush all also featured. 1977 - Future red Kenny Dalglish captained Scotland for the first time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a friendly at Hampden Park. In and out 1936 – Keeper Stanley Kane was sold to Southend United. He had only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. 1920 – Forward Peter McKinney signed from Consett Celtic. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1999 - Stephen Warnock signed as a professional. He played 67 reds games, notching once, before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 for £1.5m, although he moved on to Aston Villa in August 2009. Twice against the Blades and Hammers We have twice ended the season by playing Sheffield United in the top flight at Anfield on this day over the years. 1907 - We drew 2-2 with forward Sam Raybould on target in his 226th and final reds game. Bill McPherson also struck in our final game of the season as we finished fifteenth. Left-back Tom Rogers debuted in this fixture. 1914 - Tom Miller netted a brace as we won 2-1, just two days after losing our first ever FA Cup Final. 1957 - We beat West Ham United in a Second Division meeting, with Billy Liddell netting the only goal of the game from the spot in the final minute. 1974 - John Toshack struck at Upton Park as we drew a top-flight encounter 2-2, with Kevin Keegan on target at the death. Alec Lindsay had a penalty saved by Mervyn Day in the first half. Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard both struck for the home side. International debut once more 1927 - Ex-red Billy Lacey represented his third different country, playing in the Republic of Ireland’s second ever senior international, as they lost 2-1 to Italy ‘B’ in Dublin. This followed eighteen caps he had won for Ireland and another eight for Northern Ireland. Beaten by Rovers We have twice lost to Blackburn Rovers on this day in history. 1929 - Birthday boy Bob Done converted a penalty as we lost a top-flight meeting 2-1 at Ewood Park. 1893 - We lost an Anfield friendly 1-0. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Fulham 4-1 at Anfield with Allan Clarke putting the visitors in front with one of his seven goals against the reds, despite appearing to be offside. Ian Callaghan and Roger Hunt ensure we led at half time, with Hunt and Tony Hateley on target after the break. 1901 – Jack Cox and Bill Goldie struck as we defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in L4. Young England reds 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck for England Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 6-4 in a tournament game in Italy. 2016 – Bobby Duncan scored as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with Russia in Italy. 2002 - Mark Smyth was on target as England Under-17’s beat Finland 3-2 in a European Championships Finals game in Denmark. Clubmate David Raven was skipper and David Mannix also played. 1993 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Fratton Park. Rob Jones also featured. On the same day, future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s in their 5-1 thumping of Turkey in a European Championships qualifier. 1988 - Gary Ablett won his only Under-21’s cap as England drew 2-2 with France in the Semi-final of the European Championships at Highbury. Unfortunately, France won 6-4 on aggregate. Future red Michael Thomas also played. On the same day, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Steve McMahon, Steve Nicol, ex-red Ian Rush and future reds Glenn Hysén, István Kozma, Dean Saunders and Rigobert Song all also played for their countries. Splashing about 1894 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen nearly died when he dived off a springboard at Southport baths where the team were training, as he could not swim! He made 61 reds appearances in total after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. Potter for the Irish 2004 - Darren Potter made his debut for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 in a friendly in Poland. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund struck as the Finnish Under-21’s beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-1 away from home. Robbie Foy played for Scotland at the same level while Jimmy Ryan featured for the Irish Under-16’s on the same day, with future red Daniel Agger in action for Denmark Under-20’s and future red Ragnar Klavan playing for the senior Estonia side. Other internationals 1983 – Glenn Hysén, Mark Lawrenson, Sammy Lee, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan all played for their countries, with ex-red Joey Jones reaching half a century of caps for Wales in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Bulgaria in Wrexham. 1991 - Future red Nigel Clough netted the only goal of the game as England B beat Iceland in a friendly at Vicarage Road. Fellow future red Paul Stewart also featured. 1998 – Future red Milan Baroš featured for the Czech Republic Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in a tournament in Slovenia. 2001 – Future red Anthony Le Tallec scored twice for France Under-16’s in their 5-0 thumping of Finland in the European Championships Finals in Grimsby. 2015 - Future red Kamil Grabara saved two penalties in a shoot-out as Poland Under-16’s beat Turkey 7-6 after their friendly ended 1-1 in Israel. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat Saudi Arabia Under-15’s 2-0 at St. George’s Park. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai captained Hungary Under-167’s in their goalless friendly draw with Turkey in Telki. 2019 – Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-15’s in a 2-1 friendly defeat in Italy. 2022 – Carter Pinnington played as England Under-15’s lost a friendly 4-2 in Italy.

Stevie’s four hundred 2007 - Steven Gerrard opened the scoring from a free-kick in his 400th reds game as we faced Arsenal for the 200th time in all competitions. This Premiership game at Anfield ended in a 1-1 draw with the returning Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres both limping out of the action. Cesc Fàbregas struck the late equaliser. Happy birthday Milan 1981 - Milan Baroš was born in Valašské Meziříčí in Czechoslovakia. He struck 27 times in 108 reds games after signing from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m in July 2001. He moved to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and the League Cup. 1873 – Inside-forward Frank Becton was born in Preston. The England international signed from his hometown club for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898. 1876 – Left-back John Glover was born in West Bromwich. He arrived from New Brompton in June 1900 for £350, failing to score in 59 outings before joining Small Heath in October 1903, having been caught accepting a bribe to sign for Portsmouth. Latest trip across the park 2012 – We led 2-0 at Goodison after Leighton Baines deflected in a Luis Suárez strike before Suárez himself netted, celebrating the first goal by theatrically diving in front of David Moyes, who had accused him of simulation before the game. However, Leon Osman and Steven Naismith netted to level the scores before the break. The match ended 2-2 with Suárez having an injury-time winner wrongly ruled out for offside. Derby day defeat 1978 - An Andy King goal sent us to a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park, our first League defeat of the season that followed ten wins and a draw. It was our first derby defeat in seven years, and our only one in eighteen under Bob Paisley as ex-Blue David Johnson had a strike chalked off for offside. Jimmy Case, who played his hundredth League game, said afterwards, “You would think Everton had just won the League by the way they are celebrating.” Steve Heighway was playing his 300th League game for the reds. 1987 - Unfortunately, we lost a home League Cup Third Round tie 1-0 when Gary Stevens’ late long-range effort deflected off Gary Gillespie’s heel to wrong-foot Bruce Grobbelaar. 1944 - We also faced the Blues when our Wartime League fixture at Anfield ended goalless. Mixed fortunes against the Gunners 1893 - We recorded our best ever win over the Gunners, thumping Woolwich Arsenal 5-0 at their Manor Ground stadium. Forward Harry Bradshaw netted on his reds debut, while future Director and Manager Matt McQueen, Duncan McLean, John McCartney and James Stott scored the others, with outside-right Douglas Dick also debuting. 2009 – Alberto Aquilani and Nathan Eccleston both made their reds bows as we lost a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium, the tenth time we had been drawn against the Gunners in this competition, more than any other club. Emiliano Insúa netted his only reds goal, with Dirk Kuyt skippering the side for the first time and Damien Plessis playing his eighth and final reds game. This was the sixth consecutive season that we had been knocked out of this competition by a London side. Recent firsts 2014 – Jordan Henderson captained the reds for the first time as we beat Swansea City 2-1 in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Marvin Emnes gave the visitors the lead, but the final few minutes brought an equaliser from Mario Balotelli, Federico Fernández was dismissed for the Swans and then Dejan Lovren headed in the winner with his first goal for the club. The sending off was later rescinded. 2015 – Connor Randall made his reds bow at right-back as we beat Bournemouth 1-0 in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Nathaniel Clyne grabbed his first goal for the club to secure Jürgen Klopp’s first win in charge. Most recently 2017 - Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved as the first half of our Anfield encounter with Huddersfield Town ended goalless. However, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Gini Wijnaldum all scored after the break to secure a 3-0 victory. On the same day, forward Rhian Brewster netted while winning his 23rd and last cap for England Under-17’s as they won their World Cup Final 5-2 against Spain in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Xabi the centurion 2006 - We beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield to end their unbeaten record that season. Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch and Luis García all scored in the final third of the first half, with Dirk’s father watching him in a red shirt for the first time. Xabi Alonso reached a century of reds appearances in this game, with Gabriel Agbonlahor on target for the visitors. Birthdays on the wing 1985 - Winger Robbie Foy was born in Edinburgh. He never appeared in the reds first team, although he made the bench for our Carling Cup win at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2004. He moved to League One side Sc***horpe United on non-contract terms in August 2006, after loan spells with Chester City and Wrexham. 1921 - Wing-half Stan Palk was born in Liverpool. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940 and joined Port Vale, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000 in July 1948, the record fee we had received to date. He was their skipper for four years, playing over 150 League games. Beating Citeh again and again 1995 - We thumped Manchester City 6-0 at Anfield, with Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler both grabbing a brace to add to goals from Jamie Redknapp and Neil Ruddock, while Steve McManaman played his 200th reds game. We have also won two other top-flight meetings at their old Hyde Road ground in the distant past. 1899 - Tom Robertson netted the only goal of the game. 1905 - Joe Hewitt struck in a 1-0 victory. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1950 - We lost 4-1 at Hillsborough, with Jimmy Payne grabbing our consolation as the wonderfully named Redfern Froggatt bagged a treble for the home side, the first of his six strikes against the reds, with Dennis Woodhead netting the first of his four goals past us. 1967 - Chris Lawler scored the only goal of another First Division encounter, this time at Anfield to defeat Sheffield Wednesday. A knight for the League 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 4-0 at The Oval in Belfast. Derby despair 1959 - We lost the second leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup 2-0 at home to Everton but retained the trophy after having won the first leg 3-0. Dave Hickson played his last game for the Blues before crossing the park. Big League Cup wins 1980 - David Johnson bagged a brace with Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness also on target as we beat Third Division Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield in the Fourth Round as we headed towards lifting the trophy for the first time. Pompey’s consolation came through an Alan Kennedy own goal. 1981 - We thumped Exeter City from the same division 6-0 at their St. James Park ground, to reach the Third Round 11-0 on aggregate, en route to retaining the trophy. Ian Rush struck twice, with Kevin Sheedy bagging his first goal and Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal adding to a Nicky Marker own goal, with Neal featuring for the reds for the 400th time. Harold’s last 1911 – We lost 3-2 at League leaders Middlesbrough with Harold Uren grabbing his second and final goal for the club with Sam Gilligan also on the scoresheet. George Elliott struck one of his eight goals past us, with Jock Stirling and Edmund Eyre also on target. Sami’s Finnish farewell 1995 - Sami Hyypiä scored the winning goal against Jazz in the Finnish Cup Final, in what was his final game for Myllykosken Pallo-47 before his switch to Dutch football. The game was played at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. Reds strikers on the move 1988 - Dean Saunders joined Derby County from Oxford United for £1m. He netted 57 times in 131 games for the Rams, including a brace on his debut as he struck in each of his opening four outings, before moving to Anfield in July 1991. 1999 - Peter Beardsley joined Doncaster Rovers as a part-time striking coach. An international debutant 1980 - Future red Michael Robinson made his senior international debut in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat in France. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson both also played. 1970 - Heighway appeared for the Irish in their 1-0 defeat in a European Championships qualifier in Sweden. Damien signs on 2009 – Reserves midfielder Damien Plessis signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield until 2012. He netted once in eight senior appearances before being sold to Panathinaikos in August 2010. On the same day, future red Emre Can played for Germany Under-6’s in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Switzerland in Kempten. Other reds games 1992 – We were held to a goalless draw by Sheffield United in our League Cup Third Round tie at Bramall Lane with Bruce Grobbelaar pulling a hamstring. We won the Anfield replay, but lost at Crystal Palace at the next hurdle. 1984 – We won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush. 1972 – Peter Cormack netted as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City. 1961 – Leyton Orient drew 3-3 at Anfield in our Second Division encounter. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Tommy Leishman also on target. 1933 – We thumped Blackburn Rovers 4-0 in L4. Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys scored before the break, with Gordon Hodgson converting a second-half penalty before Syd Roberts completed the scoring. 1922 – We lost 3-0 at Cardiff City. Management moves 2013 - Abel Xavier was sacked as Manager of Portuguese top-flight side Sporting Clube Olhanense, having only been in charge for three months. 2010 - Paul Ince was appointed boss of Notts County, remaining in the role until the following April, leaving by mutual consent after a club-record nine consecutive defeats. 2004 - Jan Mølby resigned as Director of Football at Kidderminster Harriers after a year in the role. 2001 - Bruce Grobbelaar was sacked as Manager of South African Premiership side SuperSport United. He had taken charge two seasons before, immediately saving them from relegation. He then led them to eighth in the League the following season, but paid the price for an inconsistent start to the next campaign. International farewells 1981 - Avi Cohen won his last cap as a reds player as he played his 22nd senior game for Israel in their 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Portugal in Tel-Aviv. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay won his third and last cap for Scotland Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Croatia in a European Championships qualifier in Stirling. On the same day, Ki-Jana Hoever appeared for the Netherlands in a World Cup Finals group game at the same level in Brazil that they lost 3-0 to Japan.

Happy birthdays 1961 - Ian Rush was born in St. Asaph. His club record 346 strikes in 660 games across two spells with the reds helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup, after signing from Chester for just £300,000 in April 1980, moving on to Leeds United in May 1996. 1943 - Chris Lawler was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday and struck 61 times in 549 reds appearances, helping us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Portsmouth in October 1975. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. 1984 - Forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle was born in Saint-Pierre on Réunion Island. He netted nine times in 66 reds games, joining Real Club Recreativo de Huelva for €4m in May 2007 after a loan spell. Dirk at the double 2007 - Dirk Kuyt converted two spot-kicks as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Everton. The Blues had fortuitously gone ahead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, but we equalised after Tony Hibbert brought down Steven Gerrard, with the defender rightly being dismissed. Lucas was denied the stoppage time winning goal by Phil Neville’s handball on the line, for which he too was red-carded. This result left us seventeenth in the table. God’s final work 2001 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Leicester City, his last reds goals in his first spell, with Sami Hyypiä netting the other. Stephen Wright made his first start in this game, with Dennis Wise bagging the last of his four goals past us. 1923 - A less celebrated red made his final appearance when Harry Beadles played his eighteenth game in a 4-2 top-flight defeat of Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Donald McKinlay grabbed two goals past ex-red Sam Hardy, including one from the spot, with Jimmy Walsh also grabbing a brace. Dick Forshaw was playing in his 106th consecutive Liverpool game, but missed the next one as we beat Forest at the City Ground. Duncan Walker scored twice for the visitors. The end of the run 1990 - We failed to win for the first time following a club record twelve consecutive League victories, being held to a 1-1 draw at Norwich City. Gary Gillespie struck our goal after just two minutes, his sixteenth and final reds strike, but Ruel Fox equalised just five minutes later. 1894 - We ended another run by winning our first ever First Division fixture, after nine previous games without a victory. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace in our 2-0 defeat of Stoke at Anfield, with inside-right John Givens playing his tenth and final reds game. 2019 – Adam Lallana scored his 22nd and last goal for the club late on to secure a 1-1 draw at Manchester United and maintain our unbeaten League record that season. Marcus Rashford had given the home side a half-time lead, one of his seven goals past us to date. Facing the Terriers 2018 – Mohamed Salah netted the only goal of our game at Huddersfield Town, his fiftieth strike in English football. 1928 – We lost 3-2 at home to Huddersfield Town in a top-flight encounter. Dick Edmed scored both our goals, with Johnny Dent nabbing a brace for the Terriers, with Clem Stephenson netting the last of his five goals past us. Off the mark 2012 - Raheem Sterling scored his first reds goal, the only one of our League meeting with Reading at Anfield. European stalemates We have played three European Second Round ties on this day in history, failing to score every time. 1971 - We drew at Anfield with Bayern München’s eleven-man defence in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. We lost the return in Germany 3-1 as we were knocked out. 1998 - We drew with Valencia at home in the UEFA Cup, who were managed by future Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, with Steve Staunton reaching a century of reds outings. Bizarrely, we had to wear our white away kit due to the visitors’ insistence on wearing orange. However, the second leg in the Mestalla ended 2-2, so we went through on the away goals rule. 1976 - We lost 1-0 in Turkey to Trabzonspor in the European Cup thanks to a dubious penalty award, although neither side managed a shot on target and the reds only won one corner. Boss Bob Paisley described it as “the worst trip I have known in thirteen years”, while Ian Callaghan set a new club record of 79 European appearances. Fortunately, we won the Anfield return 3-0 to progress en route to our first European Cup win. John’s bow 1900 – Left-back John Glover made his reds debut as we lost a top-flight fixture 3-0 at Notts County. In and outs 1967 – Scottish inside-left Gordon Wallace was sold to Crewe Alexandra. He signed professional terms in July 1961 but only made 22 first-team appearances, netting six times, with his most famous game being the first to be screened on the BBC’s Match Of The Day programme, when he grabbed a brace as we beat Arsenal 3-2 at Anfield in August 1964. He had also netted twice on our European debut against Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur earlier that week. 2005 - Mark González officially signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m. However, he had to wait until July 2006 to have his work permit approved. He bagged three goals in 36 reds games but left the club after just a year to join Real Betis Balompié. 2011 – Forward Nathan Eccleston joined Rochdale on loan. He struck once in seven outings for the Dale. European defeat 2009 – The reds lost four games in a row for the first time since April 1987 when we went down 2-1 to Olympique Lyonnais in a Champions League group game at Anfield, with Yossi Benayoun putting us ahead. Young defender Martin Kelly made his first start, impressing before he had to go off injured. Beaten by the Mancs 1913 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie 3-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Tommy Gracie netting our goal. Management departures 2022 – Steven Gerrard was sacked as Aston Villa boss, having led them to just two victories in twelve League games from the start of the season, and just thirteen wins in forty games in charge overall. 2010 – Managing Director Christian Purslow announced his resignation, five days after the protracted completion of the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. On the same day, Adam Morgan, Matty Regan, Raheem Sterling all featured for England Under-17’s in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw in Georgia, while Samed Yeşil nabbed a brace in Germany’s 2-1 defeat of Austria in Estonia at the same level, with fellow future red Emre Can also playing. To and fro with the Baggies 1988 - Second string forward John Durnin joined West Bromwich Albion on loan. He scored two goals in five games for the Baggies, before returning to our reserves. On the same day, David Burrows made the reverse journey, for a £550,000 fee. He netted three times in 193 appearances in five years at Anfield, winning League and FA Cup medals. International beginnings and ends 1930 - Gordon Hodgson won his first cap for England as they thumped Northern Ireland 5-1 in the British International Championships in Sheffield. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop also played for the home side, with reds keeper Elisha Scott in the opposing goal. 1934 - Scott won his first cap as a Belfast Celtic player, his 28th to date, as Northern Ireland beat Scotland 2-1 in the same competition in Belfast. 1923 - Harry Chambers won his eighth and final cap as England lost 2-1 at Windsor Park in the same competition. 1956 - Tommy Younger won his first Scotland cap as a red, his ninth in total, as they held Wales to a 2-2 draw at Ninian Park, also in the British International Championships. 2008 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson won his first cap for Scotland Under-19’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Hungary. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak scored on his debut for Turkey Under-16’s in their 3-2 friendly win in Italy. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane both played for England Under-17’s as they lost their World Championship Finals group game 1-0 in Chile, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge, while future red Ibrahima Konaté featured in a European Championships qualifier as France beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Israel, with Bernard Diomède in charge. Defenders on their way 2000 - Steve Staunton joined Crystal Palace on loan. He made six appearances, scoring in their home defeat of Tranmere Rovers, and was then released back to Aston Villa on a free transfer shortly afterwards. 1997 - Barry Venison left Southampton after failing to score in thirty appearances in two years at The Dell. He has since moved into media work. 1994 - Julian Dicks was sold back to West Ham United for £1m. He had only played 28 times in his one season with the reds, netting three times, and went on to retake his regular place for the Hammers. 2005 - Ex-reds left-back Christian Ziege announced his retirement from football. He had signed for the reds in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m. He netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He had then returned to his native land to play for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Other reds games 1973 – We lost 1-0 at Leeds United with Mick Jones scoring the last of his seven goals against the reds. 1956 – We beat Fulham by the odd goal in seven in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Alan A’Court, Johnny Wheeler, Billy Liddell and Jimmy Melia struck our goals. Tosh Chamberlain nabbed the first two of his four goals past us, with Johnny Haynes also on the scoresheet. 1951 – We drew 3-3 at Middlesbrough after falling three goals behind to Wilf Mannion, Johnny Spuhler and a Lindy Delapenha penalty, the first of his four goals past us. Billy Liddell, Jack Smith and Bill Jones then scored for the reds. 1934 – Vic Wright netted as we drew 1-1 with Grimsby Town in L4. 1906 – We won 3-1 at Bury. Bobby Robinson netted before Tom Kay struck the first of his four goals past us. Sam Raybould then bagged a brace. An Olympian scorer 1908 - Arthur Berry struck as the United Kingdom trounced Sweden 12-1 in a preliminary game for the Olympics at White City. Anfield in action 1926 - England drew 3-3 with Northern Ireland in an international match staged at Anfield, with reds custodian Elisha Scott winning his tenth cap for the away side. 1954 - A representative match between the Football League and the Irish Football League took place at Anfield on a Wednesday afternoon. No reds were involved, but the Football League side did include Duncan Edwards, Nat Lofthouse and Billy Wright.
