Another treble for Gordon 1934 - Our best ever win on this day came when Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 home League win over Middlesbrough, the fourteenth of his seventeen for the club. Sam English grabbed a brace, with Harold Taylor also on target and forward Tosh Johnson making his reds bow on the day he signed. Benny Yorston struck two of his five goals against the reds. Derby joy 1973 - Emlyn Hughes struck a brace in the final eight minutes to hand us a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. This helped give us the momentum to claim the League title that season, our first for seven years, as we came out of a slump of just one win in our previous five games. Mo yet again 2018 – Mohamed Salah netted in his seventh consecutive game to open the scoring against Newcastle United at Anfield. Sadio Mané netted after half time to secure a 2-0 victory. Recent defeats 2007 - We lost to a last-minute John O’Shea goal, despite Paul Scholes being sent off late on for the visitors, as Manchester United secured a third straight clean League sheet at Anfield, the first time they had ever achieved this. Steve Finnan was making his 400th career League appearance as we lost a League game at home for the first time in seventeen months. 2012 – Arsenal won 2-1 at Anfield, despite the reds going ahead through a Laurent Koscielny own goal after Dirk Kuyt had seen a penalty saved. Robin van Persie headed in an equaliser before half time and then struck a cruel stoppage-time winner, two of his seven goals to date past us. This was only the third time in nine years we had lost a home League game after taking the lead, with Arsenal the victors on each occasion. 2020 – We lost 2-0 at Chelsea in the FA Cup Fifth Round, having made seven changes from our preceding game, which was our first League defeat of the season. Adrián fumbled Willian’s shot for the opener, one of his four goals past us, with ex-Toffee Ross Barkley adding the second. 1979 – We held Chelsea to a goalless draw, with Yugoslav keeper Petar Borota making his debut for the home side in blustery conditions. Half a century for Le Boss 2004 - We beat Levski Sofia 4-2 in Bulgaria to reach the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup 6-2 on aggregate, in what was our fiftieth European match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Sami Hyypiä played his 250th reds game, scoring our final goal. Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Dietmar Hamann struck the others. More European memories 1976 - Ray Clemence saved a penalty from Peter Kotte as we held Dynamo Dresden to a goalless UEFA Cup Fourth Round draw at their Rudolf Harbig Stadion, with Phil Thompson hitting the bar late on. We won the return leg 2-1 at Anfield, on our way to winning the trophy for the second time. 1982 - Sammy Lee played his hundredth reds game as we beat CSKA Sofia 1-0 at Anfield in the European Cup Third Round, with Ronnie Whelan netting, although we lost 2-0 in Bulgaria in the return. Bobby off the bench 1969 - Bobby Graham became our first ever FA Cup substitute, coming on for Roger Hunt in a 1-0 home defeat to Leicester City in a Fifth Round replay, with the striker throwing his shirt to the floor in a rare display of dissent. Tommy Smith had a penalty saved by Peter Shilton in that match after a John Sjoberg handball, while Andy Lochhead scored the last of his four goals past us. 2001 - We also lost at Leicester, going down 2-0 in our first game since winning the Worthington Cup in Cardiff. Ade Akinbayi and Muzzy Izzet struck the goals. Most recent win 2009 – David N’Gog and Yossi Benayoun both struck in the second half as we beat Sunderland 2-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield. On the same day, it was announced that we had become the number one-ranked club in European football according to UEFA’s coefficient system, following the previous week’s victory at Real Madrid. This was the first time we had been ranked Europe’s best since 1985. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was sent a letter following a telephone conversation to confirm his appointment as Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our only boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. Alan Kennedy conceded a penalty against Andy Gray, having already done so earlier in the season when Gray was still at Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, Bruce Grobbelaar saved from Graeme Sharp. Ex-reds reserve Alan Harper grabbed the Blues’ late equaliser. 2019 – We were held to a goalless draw at Goodison Park to ensure Manchester City remained on top of the table by a single point, an advantage they held until the end of the campaign. Quasi fails 1990 - Peter Beardsley missed a penalty in the third minute, but Gary Gillespie netted late on as we beat Millwall 1-0 at Anfield. Mixed fortunes against City We twice entertained Manchester City in the First Division at the start of last century. 1900 – We triumphed 5-2, with Sam Raybould striking twice, including a penalty, and Johnny Walker, Charles Satterthwaite and Jack Cox also grabbing goals. Billy Gillespie struck one of his six goals against the reds, with Billy Meredith also netting. 1906 - We lost 1-0. Into the Semi 1897 - George Allan netted the only goal of the game at Nottingham Forest as we reached the FA Cup Semi-final for the first time in our history. Rare defeat 1991 - Paul Merson netted one of his seven goals past us, the only strike of the game for fellow title challengers Arsenal as we lost at home for the first time in 35 games, with the run stretching back to November 1989. This was also our third consecutive defeat since Kenny Dalglish’s resignation, the first such run since April 1987. Off to a flyer 1996 - Steve McManaman struck a brace before Robbie Fowler wrapped up a 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield in just the eighth minute. This took our unbeaten run to sixteen games, with Robbie having bagged sixteen goals in his last fifteen outings. Morris for Wales Richard Morris won two caps for Wales in the British International Championships on this day, either side of his Anfield spell. 1902 - He won his second cap, and first as a Druids Ruabon player, in their goalless draw with England in Wrexham, alongside reds right-half Maurice Parry. 1906 - He won his ninth cap, and only one as a Leeds City player, as Scotland lost 2-0 in Edinburgh. George Latham also played for the Welsh. On the move 2007 - Reserves midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Southampton on loan, after seven senior reds games. He turned out twelve times for the Saints, joining Newcastle United for £2.25m in July 2008 after a season-long loan with Bolton Wanderers. 2017 – Former Director of Academy and Player Development Frank McParland was appointed Director of Football at Nottingham Forest. Internationals on target 2010 – Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty as the Netherlands beat the USA 2-1 in a friendly in Amsterdam, with ex-red Peter Crouch bagging a brace in England’s 3-1 defeat of Egypt at Wembley, the country’s 500th win in history. Yossi Benayoun scored while winning his last cap as a reds player as Israel won 2-0 in Romania, with future red Luis Suárez on target in Uruguay’s 3-1 win in Switzerland, with future red Xherdan Shaqiri debuting for the home side. Future red Joël Matip debuted for Cameroon as they held Italy to a goalless draw in a friendly in Monaco. Andy Carroll won his fifth and final Under-21’s cap as England lost 2-1 to Greece in Doncaster. On the same day, Dejan Lovren won his first cap as an Olympique Lyonnais player as Croatia beat Belgium 1-0 in a friendly in Brussels. Djibril Cissé won his first cap as a Panathinaikos player as Spain beat France 2-0 at the Stade de France. Signing on 2021 – Forward Harvey Blair signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived from Manchester United in 2015, making his senior bow as a substitute in our League Cup win at Preston North End in October 2021. 1986 - Future reds centre-back Neil Ruddock signed as a professional for Millwall. He only made four senior appearances in his first spell at The Den, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. Le Boss taken ill 2001 - Gérard Houllier was admitted to Broadgreen Hospital with chest pains during our Anfield fixture with Leeds United. Thankfully he went on to make a full recovery. Future red Harry Kewell scored for the Yorkshire outfit, before Danny Murphy equalised, handing us our 600th Premiership point. The reds therefore became the third team, after Manchester United and Arsenal, to reach this milestone. First ever Merseyside derby 1894 - We played Everton for the first time in a senior game, unfortunately going down 3-0 at Goodison Park in our ninth ever game in the top flight, at the end of which we were still seeking our first win at that level. Tom McInnes went down in history as the first derby goalscorer, with right-winger Alex Latta and left-winger John Bell also netting. The victors received a silk hat each, valued at twenty shillings, on top of their usual win bonus! 1923 - We also lost 2-1 to them in a First Division fixture at Anfield with Jimmy Walsh netting our consolation. Outside-left Fred Hopkin made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Drama in court 2010 – The prospective sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures went through a dramatic day. First, current club owners George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks obtained a Temporary Restraining Order from a Texas District Court to stop the sale of the club to NESV, before the High Court ruled against Gillett and Hicks. The sale was finally completed two days later. The defender spent two years at Anfield after signing from Fulham for £50,000 in May 1980 but was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 2002 – Midfielder Tom Hill was born in Formby. He made his senior debut in our League Cup Quarter-final defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, signing a new contract in August 2020. 1936 - Forward Bob McDougall died. He signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings before moving on to Falkirk in October 1915. 2020 – Forward Harvey Blair signed as a professional, having joined at Under-12’s level from Manchester United. He signed an extension to his deal the following March, making his senior bow in a League Cup tie at Preston North End in October 2021. Into Europe 1965 - We reached the First Round proper of the European Cup Winners’ Cup when first-half goals from Chris Lawler and a Geoff Strong 25-yard screamer handed us a 2-0 Anfield victory over Juventus, to progress 2-1 on aggregate. Firsts and last 1956 – Forward Eric Anderson played his 76th and final reds game as we lost a Second Division match 2-1 at Bristol City, with Johnny Wheeler bagging his first reds goal. 1900 – Right-half Maurice Parry debuted as Bolton Wanderers lost 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Cox netted with Charlie Satterthwaite nabbing the winner, although he had to be carried off as a result of a collision with Trotters’ keeper John Sutcliffe. Four for young Mickey 1996 - Michael Owen grabbed all four goals as England Under-18’s beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at York City’s Bootham Crescent. 2010 – Michael Ngoo struck as England Under-19’s lost 2-1 to Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Visé. Skipper Jonjo Shelvey had a penalty saved, while Andre Wisdom also featured. Misery on the South coast We have twice lost to Southampton at The Dell on this day in history. 1973 - We went down to a 1-0 defeat in a top-flight encounter, with Mick Channon on target with one of his seven strikes past us. 1999 - We lost 2-1 in a Third Round League Cup tie when Michael Owen put us ahead to reach a half century of goals for the club before the home side scored through Dean Richards and Trond Egil Soltvedt. Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s in a European Championships qualifier on the same day, with future red Marko Grujić playing for Serbia Under-21’s. 2013 – Future reds Charles Itandje and Joël Matip both played as Cameroon drew the first leg of their World Cup play-off 0-0 in Tunisia. 1998 - Frode Kippe won his last Under-21’s cap as a Lillestrøm player as Norway beat Albania 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Drammen. 2023 – Trey Nyoni debuted for England Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 with Norway at St. George’s Park. 2019 – Dejan Lovren won his last cap as a reds player as Croatia drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Wales, with Harry Wilson and ex-red Joe Allen featuring for the home side.
