The leaving of Stevie G...

Now people say hindsight is not a good thing.

But say that Stevie did leave for Chelsea this summer, I for one believe we would have not been nowhere near as successful as we have been so far this season. The man is a complete dynamo, IMO so far this season its been the best I have ever seen him and he is improving constantly.

Glad he is doing it for us and not them sell outs at Stamford Bridge.

If steven had left for Stamford bridge i would be leading the chorus calling him overrated and insisting that he and Xabi never gelled and xabi is better. Everyone would be singing from the same sheet

He stayed anyway and is genuinely the best midfielder in the country

I must admit for the several hours when he was on his way to Chelsea I was thinking what we could do with the 35 million. Now I wouldn't give him up for anything. The lad has shown this season he is more than an individual. The other players look up to him and work hard to raise their games to his level. His leadership has been exemplory. The lad WILL lead us on to greatness and he will be the BEST ever to have donned a Liverpool shirt by th etime he is finished.

agree 100%

but his form this season, is by far and away his best EVER, last year, especially the middle of the season he was great, but not as much a TEAM player as he is now, look at his celebration for the goal against Portsmouth, he never do that now, he acted like he was Liverpool football club all by himself, it just looked like it was all for his personal gain last year, while now its for the team

it seems now he`s more proud and honoured the wear the captains armband, he`d give anything for the badge now, last year it wasnt like that

Gerrard himself admitted he lacked focus last season and that he'd be a different player this year and he has kept his word. What is most impressive this year is how he is working for the team and leading when it comes to team togetherness.

it wasnt just focus he lacked last year. Guillame Balague's book is well worth a read to get some insight into understand the difficulty Gerrard had working for Benitez last year. Comments about Rafa dismissing some of the suggestions Gerrard was making during team meetings because he couldnt understand the accent, and frequent training sessions where the emphasis was so heavily on the things gerrard needed to improve that he came away wondering if Rafa really rated him as a footballer. the book doesnt take side, just reflects some of the difficulties that went on last year.

i don't think he could have turned in the performances we've seen from him in any other shirt than ours.

he gives 101% because perhaps he realises how close he came to leaving his club behind. he now sees what it means to be captain of the club he loves - of course 100k a week, euro champs medal, rafa, kissing xabi, pouncing on crouchiniho etc. all helps soften the blow of forsaking the dark side of the chavs.

he certainly is the best midfielder in the country - by some distance too..

i'll agree he does look more settled, more mature(?) etc.. like he's got the monkey off his back about leaving and wants to just go out and do what comes natural.. i was heartbroken for the 2nd year on trot when i thought he was leaving - i remember a sort of numb feeling.. i didn't once give the money the thought as i'd have taken the player over the money any day of the week - he's priceless as far as i'm concerned..

EDIT: forgot to say that L19red above is right too.. read Rafa's book (by Ballague) and you'll get an idea of why his head went West!..

Reading that at the moment (Christmas present), interesting book.

All that was really happening there though with Gerrard was that he was being treated the same as all of the other players which for whatever reason (ego, a need for reasurance, whatever) he didn't like - especially on the back of the way that Houllier supposedly fawned over him.

I'd still say that most of the difficulties last year were in Gerrard's mind, but credit to him - he has responded well this season and actually talks and acts like a Liverpool captain should do now. I enjoyed seeing him go and sort Shearer out the other day after Bowyer's tackle - although it isn't the kind of thing I'd ideally want us getting involved in, once it had started it was good to see that he wasn't going to let Shearer go unchallenged (and also good to see JC taking our players away, which you need someone to do in that ind of situation).

The only 'downside' of the book so far for me is the time spent raking up old faults of Houllier's. Say whatever you want about him, if he hadn't won the trophies he did in his time with us, we would have sunk so far off the radar that Benitez probably wouldn't have come.

Steven Gerrard is the best midfielder in this country

By a mile

Better than Essien...Better than Lampard...better than whoever

he has everything in his locker

Spot on Mate

Fat Frank has the luxury of shooting on site evey time he gets it. His ditribution, tackling, workrate are never even questioned as long as he takes 15 shots a game. Stevie doesn't play that type of game. He is always surging forward but right back to make crucial tackles. Essien has a mininmal game to play and does it effectively but does little else other than that. I watched Sooey mouthing to Terry Mac after another great Gerrard run the other day and it looked like he was saying this lad's unbelievable. Not bad coming from probably the greatest midfielder to pull on a red shirt.

100% agree.. He's a footballing God and sorely overlooked by his peers.

Only Nedved of 4yrs ago comes close to what Stevie is now.
