Extinction Rebellion

Cool - I was on the train earlier so glad it made sense

As an aside, it appears the police had a number of ‘red lines’ for XR in London and one of them was the financial district and the Bank of England. Hence them trying to shut the whole thing down last night

There was an interesting interview recently with the CEO of Shell who said that they had no choice but to find and exploit more oil reserves. He made it sound like they just couldn’t help it.

Fiduciary responsibility to their share holders, blah blah blah

From a report in the Guardian

"Police were continuing their crackdown on Monday, demanding to see identification papers for anybody crossing Lambeth Bridge"

Asking for identification papers for crossing a public bridge. In London. In 2019.

What a world.

A glimpse of the future if it all goes south in a few weeks time

BBC website does actually have a report about XR on their front page and the headline is....

"Celebs admit hypocrisy over Extinction Rebellion"

In fairness the report does talk about the protest in Trafalgar Square but the choice of headline was interesting.

Hence the need to punch back

they should all be trained in the art of pugilism, for the following reasons:

1 it will improve their fitness, self-confidence and concentration....making them better operatives in the task ahead

2 it will negate the need for hiring expensive security and ensure that no area is out of bounds, like this Canning Town...traditionally a city of thieves, and a tough nut to crack

3 by presenting themselves as a well trained unit, not afraid to fight fire with fire as you suggest, although only as a last resort, they will inspire swathes of new people to join up, hitherto sitting on the fence or more concerned about getting to work

Inconveniencing working class commuters in the East End of London with this kind of action is the stupidest f***ing thing these XR people have done yet, and they've done a load of stupid f***ing things.

EDIT: Obviously the kind of violence they experienced is unacceptable and a worrying sign but ffs....pick your targets, lads.

Yeah feels like a misstep this.

It was. But when you are a decentralised organisation involved in radical action, then these things happen. XR will reflect upon what happened, learn from it and move on. Disruption of public transport has been a tactic that has been effective before but, yeah, they picked the wrong station basically.

And whilst the action was misguided, my main concern is with the people who took a kicking. The identity of those who dished it out is pretty clear and it is disappointing that the police appear happy to let the perpetrators go which has got to be a greater concern for us all post-Brexit.

Yeah, it's all so grim.
