Those that know me, know I am really anti all this resting of players.

I think last night showed that playing a near full strength team on Saturday with a big game on the Tuesday was not foolish.

Professional players should all be able to play 2 games every week, without any issue.

When you have champions league games there's a lot of fixtures, high pressure games and it's useful to be able to have a good squad to rest players.

We aren't in that situation this season, so there's no need to rest anyone.

In the 1980s players weren't pampered like now, 1 sub (2 in Europe), multiple cup replays and Extra Time, transport was not chartered etc so travel times were awkward, and we used to get by playing 60 games a season. I do appreciate things have changed but I don't get why they can't all play 2 games a week if need be.

At Christmas they used to play 2 games in 2 or 3 days most years.

Admittedly you never hear of players wanting a rest

Players used to run 4km or so in games back then. Run up to 12 km now.

In a nutshell, it's because things have changed. The physical demands are much more intense.

It's not that players can't play 2 games a week, it's that you can gain an advantage if you choose to rest key players on occasions. That's one of the reasons why the rich clubs with the 30m players on the bench do quite well.

Surely it was miles :-)

How do we know what players ran back then, they didn't all have those GPS monitors on them. I am sure Souness ran many miles chasing the opposition and hacking them behind the refs back!

i do agree to an extent, but what prompted this 'rant' was the outrage by most on Saturday when BR played the team he did and questioned his substitutions.

I don't follow the Spanish league too much, but doesn't Ronaldo play every game? he doesn't seem to suffer.

As for who knows me, will any of you be at the Sandon next week Friday? If so, we can catch up then.

I don't remember this outrage.

Suarez is playing every game, we don't need to use Ronaldo as an example.

It was either on the match thread on here and/or FB. Plus a lot of the press were tweeting about it.
