]Gerrard out for the season, according to 5Live

Big one for him next season. He needs to retire from international footy. He won't though.

that's 4 players out with hamstring problems...it's time for some questions to be asked of the physios/medical staff.

phil boersma territory this.

Most likely have a choice to make after next season's Euros, will be 32 and contemplating how to go another two or three years at any sort of level.

Who's our doctor now? did Roy bring one in? did he leave with him?

Benitez complained about the medical staff Purslow brought in, surely can't still be the same?

Liverpool FC add new sports science experts to backroom staff

Jul 13 2010 Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have strengthened their sports science and sports medicine department with five new additions.

Two physiotherapists from the Australia national team, Darren Burgess and Phil Coles, have joined Liverpool’s new head of sports medicine Dr Peter Brukner – who was also at the World Cup with the Socceroos.

Tottenham’s club doctor Zaf Iqubal has also been recruited along with Jordan Milsom, who joins the backroom team as sports scientist, while the club will also be working with John Moores University through sports science consultant Barry Drust, who will spend a couple of days at the first team training ground each week.

Liverpool’s former club doctor Mark Waller left the club at the end of June after 17 years at Anfield.

Not just our people.....hamstrings have become an epidemic to the modern footballer. It's got to be something to do with the training and I suspect weight training and overdeveloping to the point they just ping. 60's, 70's, 80's you hardly heard of hamstring injuries.

It's fine the modern footballer being leaner, fitter, better diets etc. and then being out half the time with hamstring injuries.

My gut feeling is that it might be a case of too many cooks there. Medical stuff and advice to the players needs to be kept simple.

fair point that. The game is for athletes now and its an inherent risk with peak exertion.

Read a bit of opinion these days that believes the modern player is over trained, beyond the needs of the sport and to the point where injury becomes nigh on inevitable. Also remember reading some opinion that the real Ronaldo's knee problems could have been due to him being bulked up by weight training, giving him power and weight beyond what his tendons could take.

I think it's a serious issue that few are picking up on. I'd rather see our players [LFC] in the peak of condition...for stamina. In other words being able to run and run and tire to a minimum with the ability to wear other teams down, rather than being beefed up with muscle.

The hamstring thing is hardly an LFC problem. Just as two examples look at key players for their clubs that are missing a lot due to hamstrings....Fabregas and Arteta, just for two.
