An 11-year-old lad has smashed Wayne Rooney's all-time Liverpool Boys under-11s goalscoring record, which had been considered unbeatable.

Many thought the Manchester United and England forward’s total of 72 goals in the 1996-97 season was unbeatable.

But boy wonder Gerard Garner surpassed the haul by bagging 76 goals this campaign to guide his team to nine trophies and win all of their 39 games.

"I never thought I would get anywhere near the record at the start of the season," Gerard told Junior XSport.

"Actually, I didn’t even know there was one until much later."

Despite his prolific goalscoring feats, the youngster is extremely modest about his achievements and is very reluctant to remember any details.

He added: "I don’t really like to think too much about the number of goals I score, the way I score them or which was the best goal.

"I am only part of the team. I want to thank all my teammates for helping me break the record and also all the people who have helped coach me. I certainly couldn’t have done it without them."

But even without the copious number of goals they both score, Gerard and Rooney have other things in common.

The former, who has been on Liverpool's books since the age of six, is a pupil at Our Lady & St Swithin’s Primary School in Croxteth, which, coincidentally, is the ex-Everton striker's old school.

But there is one major difference – Gerard is a Red and Rooney, certainly when growing up, was a committed Blue.

Rafa won't give a local lad a chance. Look at Spearing, treated like a dog....

If only he was called Gerardo, or something

Those quotes read like they were written by a PR. If 11 year olds now have PRs working for them I think football might have jumped the shark.

I've heard of kids in London "transferring" between London clubs for 6 figure sums, so yep, on our books since 6 does not surprise me

On our books since 6 years old? Did they start paying him in Power Ranger toys and then slowly upgrade to Ben10?

I bet he's got the most Xbox games out of all his mates

DON'T. F*cking ridiculous and drives me nuts.

Yeah, its a shame that these lads get professional coaching in a superb environment, its tantamount to child abuse.

He'd be better off under your tutelage at the Slough 'runners up' dream team.
