LIVERPOOL FEAR GERRARD NEEDS OP - REPORT

Posted 30/10/09 07:58EmailPrintSave

Liverpool reportedly fear that Steven Gerrard will require an operation to cure his groin injury.

Gerrard will be absent again when Liverpool travel to Fulham on Saturday having been last seen limping out of the Champions League tie with Lyon two weeks ago after aggravating the injury he first suffered on international duty.

According to The Daily Mail, 'Liverpool are perplexed by Gerrard's slow recovery. They are reluctant to opt for surgery but it may be an option if the injury fails to respond to treatment.'

A concurring Daily Express also reckons that Gerrard 'remains a major doubt for the Champions League showdown with Lyon' next week and describes Rafa Benitez as 'growing increasingly concerned over his skipper's fitness'.

'The player has a history of groin problems - twice previously he has undergone surgery - and suffered the latest injury against the Ukraine three weeks ago. He aggravated the problem in the home defeat by Lyon last week and missed the Premier League win over United and Wednesday's Carling Cup reverse at Arsenal,' it reports.

Officially, however, Gerrard is yet to be ruled out and is still receiving treatment from the club's medical department.

Fernando Torres is fit for the match at Craven Cottage while it is likely that Alberto Aquilani will be named in the squad and is set to be named as a substitute for the game.

Didn't he have an op at about this time last year? It's a bit worrying if he needs another one.

Yep he has had an operation for the same thing before but not sure when - I get the feeling that he's been having trouble with his groin since the start of the season

Not sure about the source of this information. Everything coming out of the club has suggested it isn't a serious issue, and the writer himself says he hasn't officially been ruled out for Fulham.

Either they have an excellent source within the club or the writer is guessing, and taking into account its football365 I'd actually say the latter is more likely. Until I know a bit more I'm not getting worried yet.

I think its an excellent source.

Even after the op though, he could be back within 2 weeks, Michael Carrick played a game 11 days after he had the same one.

I know its difficult for the medical staff but in cases like these I always wish the decision had been taken a bit earlier (if a decision has indeed been taken yet)

Fair enough then, this is a source I definitely trust :)

Agree that the decision maybe should have been made a little earlier though.
