Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was tonight relieved of his duties within hours of guiding his side to victory over Derby.

The 39-year-old former England defender’s departure was confirmed in a brief statement issued through the club’s official website, www.mfc.co.uk.

The statement read: “Middlesbrough FC have tonight announced that manager Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his position with immediate effect.

“Football consultant Alan Smith will also be leaving the club as part of the change.”

It's either a brilliant decision or a crazy gamble. Guess we'll know the answer when it's known who is taking over and whether they go up or not.

To be honest, I don't mind Gibson as a chairman. I know he's had a few run ins with Liverpool FC but if he thinks he or the club are being short changed or rules weren't adhered to, he'll defend his club.

I do. He's awful. Awful person and awful chairman. Sacked Southgate about 12 months too late.

You have to remember where they were when he bought the club. There were chains on the gates of Ayresome Park, the club was on it's a***.

I agree he should have got rid of Southgate a year ago, but just because he made the wrong decision then, doesn't mean he needs to compound it by leaving him there throughout this season.

To me it looks like he's wanted to freshen the club up and change the atmosphere around the place. Reading between the lines of his statement of "Gareth needs a rest and when he's refreshed I'm sure he'll be successful elsewhere" . Maybe the club was in a rut and Gibson has realised the time was right to make the change. I also think that Curbishley would do a good job there

Southgate had a really s*** hand dealt to him.

Sell your best players to reduce the wage bill and debt and blood the youngsters. By the way, we expect you to stay in the PL too. Good luck Gareth.

I'd be quite content with Strachan if we were looking for someone...

Not my first choice but passionate & realistic (if the £££m managers are out of reach).

What a strange managerial tenure that was.

He was very optimistic about how they'd fare in the championship. No problems there you think, except that he was saying this in late March when the battle to stay up was still anyone's.

I don't know what the fans actually think of him but i'd have been looking to hunt him down and slap his blase chops.

For s***s and giggles here's Collymore's take on it..

Gordon Strachan is set to return to management today at Middlesbrough but I remain unconvinced at the Scot’s ability in the dug-out.

Strachan seems to be one of a pool of managers whose names are always linked with jobs and who never struggles for work but I am not sure why.

This after all is the man who got Coventry City relegated from the top-flight before having modest success at Southampton.

And while people point to his reign at Celtic as a triumph, it is a two-horse race north of the border.

I get so concerned when it is always Strachan, Alan Curbishley and Glenn Hoddle being mentioned for the same vacant jobs.

I still remember my old Nottingham Forest striker partner Bryan Roy telling me that English coaching is the laughing stock of Europe.

And I think it is a great shame if more and more young coaches like Gareth Southgate are potentially lost to the profession.

I like Southgate and reckon he would have got it right eventually at Boro but he got his marching orders.

The constant loop of managers, who have average aims and average ambitions, lining up to replace him really depresses me.

That’s why I really want to see men such as Paul Ince, Southgate, Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer succeed in management.

There's also another part of his column saying Mourinho's the only man that can win Liverpool the league but i'm not posting that up.. the c*** is a buffoon..
