Are we good enough?

Will he wont he? Xabi is still a Liverpool player as I type. So will he be a Liverpool player next season or will the lure of the mighty Real Madrid claim yet another big name.

Liverpool have not been overly impressive in the lead up to the coming season but, when have we ever?

||||Can the mighty reds recreate the form of last season but this time, make take the league?

GK - Brill

DF - One experienced, versitile back up from being Brill

MF - Masch, Yossi and Kuyt - Brill. Rest - Not overly hot. Need at least one class CM and a hopefully a wide player

FW - Gerrard and Torres - Double Brill. Need a quality back up then - Brill cubed.

As it stands i'll say we'll finish 3rd at best.

With a them additions we'll piss this tinpot league

Thats it. I think most sensible fans agree with this. In an ideal world thats what would happen.

My forecast is that we'll sign a replacement for Xabi and maybe a centre back. I can't see us signing a backup striker (think Rafa has faith in Voronin, Kuyt, Babel & N'Gog to do that) and I just don't think we'll sign that other wide player.

we're currently short all over the place now imo. centre half, centre mid and upfront. we lack cover in defence, we lack a ball playing midfielder now, and we lack someone else to play instead of torres. well pissed off at the mo tbh.

we were so close last year and instead of pushing on we've weakened. hope there's some good news round the corner re: signings.

if we sign our reported targets distin, aquilani and silva we'll look like a team challenging for the title again

looks well within our budget as well

I agree with you Mike. Said simmilar things in the match thread the other night which sometimes gets misinterpreted as moaning about the result in pre season friendlies. Underlying the result there was a performance from the fringe players that had me concerned.

Of our outfield players we have what I reckon to be 13 or 14 players that can start games and more often than not give you a dependable game. Beyond that there are some worrying characters.

We need to be signing 4 or 5 experienced players IMO. There's 11 days to do that transfer business and then get them integrated into the squad so that we hit the ground running. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Depressing summer.

We still need a back-up centre half.

Despite the fee, Johnson isn't an upgrade on Arbeloa - he's better going forward but poorer defensively.

We've lost Xabi. No idea if the mooted replacement(s) will cut it.

We still need another striker. Voronin and Ngog aren't up to it (never will be and not yet respectively).

We'll struggle to challenge again I reckon. 3rd for me.

I think we're 2 or 3 signings away from what many fans hoped would be an improvement on the squad. I think Johnson is an improvement on Arbeloa, but we need to replace Hyypia and Alonso, and sign a quality forward

If Parry had presided over this summers transfer dealings so far, he'd have been slaughtered.

What, for standing up to the Real bully boys and getting the 7th highest sterling fee for a PL player?

What did we pay for Alonso? Was it around £10 mill? So, £20 mill profit for a player who no longer wished to play for us. I'd say Rafa has played a blinder here. Parry would probably have buckled early in the negotiations and sold him for £20 mill and a new clown tie!

I'm sure we'll make moves on transfers now, Rafa will doubtless have his targets lined up. It is obvious he needed to know the final outcome of the Alonso saga before finalising any deals

I'm gutted Alonso's gone, one of my fav players, but he clearly wanted to feck off to the fascists. I wish him luck and good fortune in his personal life, and when he plays for his country, but nothing but dismal failure when he pulls on the white shirt of those arrogant t***s at Santiago Bernabéu

not too sure at the moment about our chances for the PL, we need cover at the back , a replacement for Alonso and someone who can come in for Torres and look half as good. let's see who comes in over the next week or so.

it will be interesting to watch Mascherano's attitude during the start to the season. will he be happier now Alonso has gone as he will be more likely to play every game, or will he be pissed off tha the did not get his "dream" to Barcelona?

Weaker than 3 months ago but the transfer window isn't over yet. Over all gutted as I thought this really really was a great chance to add 1 maybe 2 players and do the league. 2nd again or 3rd if we manage to beat the top teams again.

I would have thought it be fairly clear throughout these negotiations that Rafa isn't stupid. He knows what's going on and put a price on a players head that was initially laughed at by RM. In the end, they crumbled and have had to pay the money. The price laid down was so replacement players can be brought in. I think we can safely assume Rafa already knows who he wants and the prices he will have to pay for them. I'm sure that we will ultimately be in a stronger position with the new players we bring in, even though that maybe hard to believe with losing Xabi today.

coming 2nd or 3rd will feel like s**** after the way we played last season.

all we needed was 2 players, 2 f***ing players, a defender and a decent forward.

now with Alonso going, we are looking at having to play with an untried PL midfielder and still no sign of that back up for Torres.

someone should do something about Madrid , they are just making the rules up as they go along. I even feel a very, very, very small twinge of sympathy for the Mancs and Milan for the Placcy and Kaka fiascos, but they were well rewarded in the end.
