I've avoided reading nearly anything football related in the media for some time now because I found a lot of it to be uninteresting and offering very little in the way of real insight into or analysis of matches. Are there any football writers or journalists in either the print media or on radio who you think are consistently good? Those who don't simply state the obvious and actually make you think?

can only speak for myself but i enjoy reading kevin mccarra, paul wilson, gabriele marcotti, henry winter, james lawton and oli kay on a regular basis. martin samuel's worth reading sometimes if you want to swear at and argue with the c***, but he does raise questions. for tactical analysis, david pleat each monday in the guardian usually gives you something to think about. david conn's pretty good on the financial stuff, though a bit conceited with it sometimes.

i think the worst place for football journalism / comment, outside of the obvious redtops, is the bbc. hansen's column could usually be written by a five year old.

James Lawton? Seriously? He's an Arsenal w***ing c***.

He used to be decent, don't know what happened to him. Maybe Wenger fed him something.

Oliver Kay and Henry Winter are usually good, although biased.

yeah lawton's pieces are usually pretty considered and interesting. never really noticed much of a club bias from him.

deathscar is absolutely right. When writing on Arsenal, you could imagine him fornicating with himself.

A couple of years ago, he used to be ok on writing about us, but something clicked inside of him, and since then, he's been all medieval, over Rafa ar5e

They used to be, but surely you've read some of his more recent stuff?

The one that sticks out was how Arsenal's 0-0 result vs AC Milan was better than the battering we gave Inter. Then after we beat Arsenal, he went into w*** overdrive about "how football lost and Arsenal should have advanced on playing more beautifully."

He does it with Barca too - heaven forbid Arsenal and Barca meet in the 2nd round...I think he may actually die from spunking off too much.

Gabriel Marcotti is very good and when I agree with Martin Samuel's argument, I don't think there's a more eloquent sports journalist. However, this is not very often and Samuel has far too many agendas. A few years ago, there was barely a week that went by when he wasn't slating Ericksson. Then his new favourite topic was writing about the West Ham and Tevez issue. His writing about Lampard during the time of his mum's death, culminating in his match report of the semi final nearly made me sick, but when he's on point, there's nobody better.

Jonathan Wilson is very good, but so much of his work centres around eastern European football, which I have little interest it.

The best journalist/pundit in terms of tactics is Stewart Robson, who writes as the Tactician in the Sunday Telegraph and occosianally appears on Channel 5.

Agree that the BBC is the worst. Mihir Bose is an utter c***, while Hansen's articles are impressive in that his weekly column of 300 odd words has never said one thing remotely insightful or interesting.

Have to agree about Samuel. He has agenda's, it's obvious who his mates are and he's a tad smug, but he's a fantastic journalist.

Brilliant writer.

I pay very little notice of what any of them say. Too many are in the pockets of managers and players and have an agenda. That programme on Sunday morning "Sunday Supplement" is ridiculous where they all sit round a table with croissants like wise old sages. How are they in any better position to comment about issues than any ordinary fan with half a braincell?

I tend to like Winter's writing. He's a bit biased towards us as well so why the dislike?

been going for years

him and Hayward at the telegraph (back in the day when i used to buy newspapers) used to drive me up the wall with their smug, supercilious stuff

his (like so many journos - pretty much all of them in fact) appearances on SS drive me mad too, loving the sound of their own voice - i've even heard him on 5live offering his 'expert' opinion too -

I’ll tell you who’s an uber cvnt, Jeff Powell. Ever since Thatcher called him in, with other people, about football violence in the Eighties, he been on a moral crusade since.

Absolute w4nker of a man

paddy barclay.

This is the man who said on Jimmy Hills Show a couple of years ago

"Liverpool think their a big club, but their not anymore, and the sooner they realise that, the better"

i don't actually mind him

so long as it's not England he's talking about

he keeps bigging us up that we're going to win the World Cup

As a Scot it's clearly the last thing on earth he wants, so he says England are gonna win it - so if they do he can say 'there, i told you so' and if they lose he can point and laugh

he did it under Eriksson and he's doing it again under Capello

Any c*nt who appears on that sunday supplement is a c*nt. They really show themselves up for what they do. Week after week of empty speculation:

"whats going on with newcastle?"

"exactly! what is going on at newcastle?"

"I know its crazy"

"the fans must be going crazy"

"they are"

"they just dont know whats going on"

"well what IS going on?"

"exactly"

"the fans want it to change"

"but will it?"

"who knows?"

"exactly, I've written two pages about it today asking the same question"

"so have I"

"so has my mate"

"it's crazy. after the break...what's happening at Spurs?"

YOU'RE THE F*CKIN JOURNALISTS IT'S YOUR JOB TO FIND OUT AND REPORT IT YOU STUPID LAZY C*NTS

I like Winter and Oliver Kay for general footie stuff. Sid Lowe is very good as already mentioned.

Dion Fanning has gotten good in his stuff about us in the last year or two.

Best footie pundit going at the moment is Pat Dolan in my opinion. Don't always agree with him but you can see he at least thinks before opening his gob.
