5 things that ruined football?

Recommended Posts

Whats the five reason that you personally can think of that ruined football?

For me Football is actually at it's lowest ebb since the 70s - it may look glittering and sparkling - but it's getting dull and pointless with few teams challenging at the top and diving and cheating and questioning the referees being a daily occurrence.

1. 3 points for a win - completely killed the game - supposed to 'reward' those that win game - actually meant that the league wasn't ever going to be as close as it used to be - and some teams still play for draws

2. The offside malarkey - If you are in an offside position when the ball is played - THEN YOU ARE OFFSIDE. Full stop.

3. Ticket Prices - getting beyond a joke now - well ahead of inflation. Greedy clubs cashing in on the loyalty of normal everyday football fans

4. Getting rid of the Cup Winners Cup and introducing this farcical 'Champions' League where you don't actually have to be any kind of 'Champion' to get into it - they should reverse it - bring back the European Cup as a knockout competition and reintroduce the Cup Winners Cup. European Football is nowhere near as good as it used to be at present - they've had a go at this league s**** in the UEFA Cup and in the 'Champions' League and it's as boring as f***. Bring back the proper competitions.

5. Diving and lack of tackling. This seems to be something that is tied together - the diving and the fact even a half decent tackle results in a yellow card is ruining the game. It used to be played by a bunch of blokes (Some were a bit feeble even in the 70s) which could put tackles in and which could take those tackles. Not dive around rolling in 'pain' and 'agony' then jump up 2 minutes later and run like a spring chicken down the line. This really needs to be sorted out because it's pathetic. To tell me that a professional full time footballer who does nothing but train and play can't take a robust tackle without going down like the titanic is laughable. Tackling is part of the game - showboating and stuff is OK - but without tackling football is just getting to be a laughable joke of a non-contact sport.

the offside rule saved the game. And further refinements have indeed made the game much more fluid.

Teams playing for draws are stupid. 3 points for a win is an excellent rule.

Correct, and if it wasn't for the current champion league format we would never have had Istanbul

Whats ruining the game

1. Refs acting like they are kings of the world and are mostly unaccountable for their mistakes

2. Sky sports news with their over hyping of the game

3. Celebrity fans who never bother with football before

4. Beckham

5. Team England

The fact that some teams play for a draw doesn't supercede the fact that most play for a win.

Completely agree, the current rulings are a f*cking joke.

3. Ticket Prices - getting beyond a joke now - well ahead of inflation. Greedy clubs cashing in on the loyalty of normal everyday football fans.

The clubs were that desperate to market themselves alongside other entertainment mediums like the theatre that they never thought about how it would affect Joe Blow. You've now got clubs like Blackburn who give us eight thousand odd tickets because they can't fill the ground and an absolutely shocking lack of gangs of teenagers at our place - the sort of demographic the club should be targeting. Even the Mancs are better than us at that, any ticket in the ground is 50% off for U16s.

4. Getting rid of the Cup Winners Cup and introducing this farcical 'Champions' League where you don't actually have to be any kind of 'Champion' to get into it - they should reverse it - bring back the European Cup as a knockout competition and reintroduce the Cup Winners Cup. Without the changes, we wouldn't have had Istanbul, indeed we'd have had precious little European football.

Correct. I would make diving a much more punishable offence. If a player was persistently diving over a sustained period and was identified conclusively by cameras then ban him for a month or something. It'd only take one high profile player to feel the pinch for everyone to get the message, players and clubs.

The ridiculous offside 'rule' - should change back to the way it used to be, but I don't think the 'offside means offside' idea would work. Perhaps 'offside is offside' within the penalty area might.

I think 3-points for a win is a very good thing.

Generally what's 'ruined' football the most is it's transformation from a working class sport to a middle class entertainment.

Diving - not a good thing as such, but neither was the continuous fouling that it was a reaction to. Either or both are best dealt with by post-match video review, IMO.

European Cup should get it's true name back and i agree that the Cup Winners Cup should be brought back. Where is it, BTW?

There are also far too many competitive internationals these days - used to be 4 or 6 qualifying matches for the tournaments, not it's 12 or 14 (!)

The 4 English divisions should be known as first, second, third and fourth again - indeed the already can be provided people just refuse to adopt the latest artificial titles they pick.

Sky. Moving kick-offs all over the place at their whim, overhyping the "product", inflicting idiotic "pundits" and getting into the heads of the impressionable, "I want it NOW!" swet.

Gentrification. I never expect to be within a hectare of David Mellor under any circumstances.

The taking of the whole thing too seriously. It's a game, it's a laugh.

England

Thick footballers

Can't get as excited about diving as some. Defenders get away with murder in respect of shirt-pulling, holding and blocking and that is much easier to call by a referee than an apparent dive. Same rules all over the pitch, The laws of the game don't distinguish. If it's a free-kick anywhere, it's a penalty in the area.
