New York Red Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I hope I am not mockering here, but my God we have an embarassment of riches. We're still a bit stronger on the right than the left, but with Kelly, Flanagan on the right and GloJo able to play both sides, we may well be able to forget about signing a LB this summer. Robinson looks damn impressive there. Happy days indeed.

CarraLegend Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 we may well be able to forget about signing a LB this summer. No, 2 games shouldnt change our plans, we need a left back and should get one.
Sion Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 They're still kids. We'll Insua them if we're not carefullNeed at least one proper full-back
drdooom Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 forget about signing Doesn't this go against the very core of your being?
Benzo-13 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Jesus no.We still need a no.1 left back.Can't let these lads be ruined.
Chewie Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Still need to make signings... If we sneak into any euro competition plus carling we'll need em... Let them blood in... Remember Callaghan talking bout how he got a standing ovation on his debut and then he waited a hecknof a long time before he was a regular...if I was Robinson and Flanagan I'd be looking to feature in 8-10 games next year as reall genuine progress. Kelly should be thinking 25-30 as cover/starting. Let's build an empire, not a youth team... Chewie
New York Red Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Doesn't this go against the very core of your being? I've just gotten out of rehab for it. I'm giving this new approach a good go. I'll fall off the wagon though. I know it.

Chewie If we buy top class players than that's great, what we don't need are players like Degen, Voronin, poulsen, Cole who aren't good enough for us but stand in the way of youngsters getting their chances
Epic Swindle Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Have to keep them involved now, they've had a real taste and it's difficult to go back down a level for a long period of time. There's plenty of games to go round if we get into europe. We definetly need a LB regardless.
lfc003 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 They've done well in their outings but so did Insua when he broke through, They're still very very young so let them develop in the reserves next season behind experienced top class full backs.
épieur Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 They've done well in their outings but so did Insua when he broke through, They're still very very young so let them develop in the reserves next season behind experienced top class full backs.yup. It makes for a nice change though. Under Roy, we were destitutely poor at fullback. Konchesky was never ever going to cut it and Johnson looked as out of sorts as any a good player I've seen. Without even adding new players (in fact, offloading one) we now have a quite good fullback pairing in Kelly and Johnson and the kids come in for these two games and do better than I would have expected from PFK and Johnson under Roy. We've actually solved a severe problem at fullback simply by having a good manager.
Chewie Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 If we buy top class players than that's great, what we don't need are players like Degen, Voronin, poulsen, Cole who aren't good enough for us but stand in the way of youngsters getting their chances Agreed 100%... so by that reckoning we need a top class left back. Two experienced full backs plus the young guns as cover and starters in less significant games... No need to hold em back but no need to push them forward when if they've enough about them they'll push themselves forward... All of this is how I remember us in our great days...not afraid to spend for quality, not afraid to promote from within, not afraid to give a player tine to appreciate what it means to be a Liverpool player... Happy with all that ... The King is shedding this club of it's fear...heck I don't even care if the scum win the league as from now on the only thing that matters is us... Chewie
Damian_de Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 We still need a no.1 left back.Defo. Robinson looks like a prospect but not more IMO. Flanagan on the other hand... think he is ready.
torn Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 yes, a left sided GloJo is needed, however great to see how well the young lads are doing.
Earl Hafler Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Defo. Robinson looks like a prospect but not more IMO. Flanagan on the other hand... think he is ready. They're both prospects. And whilst it's not an embarrassment of riches, i think we've gone from requiring two ( potentially three ) fullbacks to just one. Just need to sign Cahill
Andy-oh-six Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Still need a first choice left back. Looks like Enrique could be the man. We are well stocked at right back and with a new first choice at left back we will be reasonably strong there.
alias75 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Definitely still need a left back, as others have said you have to blood young players slowly, picking the right games for them. What it does mean is we only need 1 left back when it looked like we might need 2, have Robinson as backup and GJ as 3rd choice in case of an emergency, on the right we have Kelly, GJ and Flannagan, if we can get Kelly games at CB eventually Flannagan can be #2 behind GJ. But they're still very young and have a lot of developing to do, i agree you don't want them to slip back now but they're not ready to be first team regulars and we do have better in their positions when everyones fit. Theres plenty of games so they'll get their chance again.
New York Red Posted April 23, 2011 Author Posted April 23, 2011 Is Degen still on our books? For one more season I think.
Leo No.8 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 (edited) I think if we sign Enrique its the perfect situation at full back for years to come. You've got Johnson, Kelly and Flanagan at right back then Enrique, Johnson and Robinson at left back - great depth. Its massive what Flanagan and Robinson have done here - massive for their confidence, and means that there'll be no fear of them being brought into the team. I think 3rd spot in the pecking order is ideal for both of them right now. It means they will get some games with injury and players being rested so will stay involved and keep developing, but won't be overworked or play too much. They'll have enough involvement to keep them hungry and keep the lads who are going to be first choice on their toes. Its ideal with the first choices being mid 20s and the other lads so young. The only difficult aspect IMO is Johnson, Enrique and Kelly are all too good not to be first choice. However Kelly and Johnson are both prone to injuries so it'll probably work itself out. If all three were to stay fit then there would be a good argument for moving Kelly to centre half. I'm eager to see what he can do in that position at the highest level, think he'll be boss. In terms of his physical attributes he's absolutely got it all to play at centre half; the size, the strength, the reading of the game and he's really quick too. Edited April 23, 2011 by Leo No.8
madaboutlfc Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 is it just me that thinks robinson looks like one of our fastest players.
Keita Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 I hope I am not mockering here, but my God we have an embarassment of riches. Leo No.8 Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 is it just me that thinks robinson looks like one of our fastest players. The fact that one of the quickest players in the league (Walcott) couldn't beat him for pace last weekend suggests he's more than a bit quick. Be interesting to see if he can use that pace in a more attacking manner as he settles into the side and becomes more confident - could be a hell of a weapon going forward as well.
