  1. "The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all"
  2. It struck me today that 9/11 is closer to 1980 than the present day, and I remember thinking at the time that we'll be living with the fallout from this for 25 years. Based on current events I'm revising that upwards, and feeling pretty down about it. Seems like if 9/11 was in the gulag it would be fine by now.
  3. I'm always fascinated with the Bristol City one as that is right when they did their first division to fourth division in consecutive seasons, I think the first English team to do so.
  4. I'm fairly confident that FSG will make a good decision regarding the next man up. They had already identified Klopp as their guy before appointing Rodgers (Klopp as the best emerging talent), and acted swiftly when they found out he was available and open to join us. They also had the right shortlist last time as I see it, with Klopp and Ancelotti. Clearly Klopp was the superior choice, in particular as a fit with Liverpool, but they basically had 2 of the 3 best managers around at the time in the room. I've been thinking about the profile they will have identified as the next step for a while now. In particular, in Klopp and Guardiola there were two young managers emerging at the same time who were completely disrupting European football with their ideas. There hasn't really been anyone comparable since then, in terms of their wider impact, and everyone plays some kind of Klopp/Guardiola hybrid these days. Will they look for the CEO, or the young and hungry Spanish midfielder? Guess we won't have to wait too long to start getting some actual links as opposed to just bookies odds.
  5. Good Lord I'd be ashamed to ask these questions
  6. A disturbing but credible thought. What seems different about the UK is that this is exposed and visible above the surface. But I assume this to be the case pretty much anywhere if things get bad enough.
  7. I had assumed that the apathy towards an alternative was largely caused by the voting system itself, so your mention of post colonial privilege is an interesting perspective. A heavy burden of not only guilt but also insecurity.
  8. Riddle me this, people of the UK. Is there actually a vacuum on the left into which a new party could emerge? Seems to me there are a lot of experienced politicians without a home, and surely a reasonable number of voters who won't be able to stomach voting for this version of labour seeing as it is basically the Tories for most of the last 40 years. It is wild to me that the political choices are basically all right of centre, bar the greens. I'm sorry you have to live through this complete s***show. It's tragic, really.
  9. Tiny slice of reality for thousands of people rn. Maybe have a little think about it.
  10. Because they'd have only watched YouTube highlight reels
  11. Ok so if I'm interpreting this correctly... The future of Ryan G may or may not have been uncertain and it's currently either certain or uncertain. Thomas Tuchel may or may not have to show him a clear plan. Alternately, he may do something else. Or may not. If he doesn't, or does, a move to England could be possible. Or not, and maybe a move to somewhere else. Or no move. But if a move is possible Liverpool could be interested. Or not. It's on?
  12. small point of order here - young T-Rex's actually had more normal forearm to body size ratio ....
  13. Believers to doubters, innit?
  14. Put this in here: Brøndby win the Danish league title. Been a 16 year hiatus since the last win (with Agger breaking through). They have been building towards this for a number of seasons, first under former Leipzig coach Zorniger, a typical German Gegenpressing coach, and now job completed by former Denmark u-21 manager Niels Frederiksen, who has blended the style of Zorniger and some of his signings with the products of their youth system. Nicely sets up a potential Liverpool-Brøndby match up in next year's CL. Brøndby has never lost to Liverpool so an ideal chance to right the record books.
  15. And then turn around and say they 'had to do it because the ESL is not competitive'
  16. The droll response would be 'because there is a lot of coverage about it in the media'.
