A mate was on a course with him about 6 months ago and mentioned how impressive he was in presenting his thinking about footballers and the skill ('not art' - he pointed out!) in defending and being organised and the fact that it is his belief that defenders sell themselves short because it is perceived that their role is lesser than that of an attacker and accordingly actually allow themselves to make mistakes because of 'I'm just a defender' mentality - supposedly he used one of current team as an example!

He thinks that his role is just to reconfirm to a player he is an integral part of the team overall, to highlight a player's strengths and encourage them to use them naturally and encourage them always to want the ball - the reason they became footballers. His other piece was on how good organisation is important but not to the extent that skill and ability are compromised. The lad I know, a Wolves fan, said he'd be happy at the time for him to be their manager and could imagine him impressing any player.

Co-incidence, we now have kept 3 clean sheets on the spin after he has had longer with the squad?

Would also go a long way in explaining why our defenders spend so much time the opposition box yesterday.

Anybody know how many of the current first team actually came through the ranks of the junior sides (the youth sides, not the reserves or u/18s) they were in as defenders?

Glen Johnson was a CB til he was about 17/18 believe it or not.

This is something that's picked up quite a lot now in the UK & Ireland - traditionally kids are coached not to want the ball, i.e we concentrate on passing, which when you think about it is all about getting rid of the ball as soon as possible. Same with defending, we teach kids to get the ball as far away from the goal as quickly as possible. Far more emphasis should be put on being comfortable with the ball.

It's obvious that he did not want to be in that position anymore now tho?

Except Kyrgiakos. When he was two years old, be built an eleven foot high stone wall around his house with his bare hands, and nobody could get in

Out of human skulls.

Was it glen Johnson who didn't start playing until he was 14?

Nah, he was with West Ham from young. I know Walcott didn't play organised football until he was 10 or 11. 6 years later he was at the World Cup.

Thanks for the insight Mark, reading that made me think of Skrtel's statement the other day about stopping T****s from scoring on Sunday. Looks like he's instilled a bit of belief back in the defence.

he didn't sign with west ham until he was 15, Im sure I read/heard he hadn't been playing that long when he made his debut at 16. I remember him playing against us the year why went down and thinking it was an impressive performance given what had been said about him.

I saw him play in the Victory Shield when he was 14/15 and he was with West Ham then, be weird to go from never playing football straight into the England setup.

Noticed on all photos of training recently Clarke has been there whereas Sammy is nowhere to be seen.

He's been outside handing out Torres shirts to burn.

I have been wondering for along time what Sammy Lee really is doing at Liverpool.

You know when the wallasey tunnel is down to one lane?

Well that's our Sammy that's been out there with the cones.
