Benitez also revealed that Fernando Torres and Glen Johnson are not expected to return to action until March at the earliest.

"Glen is still progressing," added Benitez. "It's looking like he will be back in another three or four weeks. When he was first ruled out, it looked like he would be out for two months and it has been a month so far.

"Fernando is progressing too. Hopefully he will be back in the same time, while Yossi [benayoun] could return in two weeks."

Rafa has also been talking up Babel -

"If we play without the speculation surrounding Ryan Babel then I am sure it will be easier for him to focus and for me to play him," explained Benitez.

"So I think we will be better in attack and the team will be better."

Hopefully Babel can look at Nani and thinks to himself that he can still turn it around, I don't want him to come in for Reira though

Babel on the right, Riera on the left, Gerrard behind Kuyt until everyone's fit. If Babel still doesn't pull his finger out then bring in Maxi.

I'd start Maxi instead of Babel every single time. I'd also consider starting Sammy Lee there ahead of Babel if Maxi wasn't fit.

I hope they take as long as necessary with Fernando. We can't let him keep breaking down.

He'll be right for the world cup I bet...

The Spanish Michael Owen/Harry Kewell

I'm f***ed off more because he played in the ridiculous f***ing conferderations cup thing. How FIFA have come to the conclusion that that is a good idea boggles the mind.

it's the usual reason. because fifa makes a f***load of money in sponsorship from it. infuriating when players are overplayed for pointless competitions though.

After his windy exit against City, I cant see him playing in a match against Everton - he'd probably cry off because one of them gave him a mean look.

who are you talking about?

They better be sorting his hernia while he's out with this!

There are different kinds of hernias - some players can recover within 4 weeks, while others take much longer (Bentner at Arsenal for example). My understanding of a hernia (having had a sports related one), is that although it can get 'less bad' -i.e. painful - with rest - it doesn't repair or heal itself, so it's surely got to be dealt with at some point.

It's debatable whether surgery is the best course of action. Personally I had problems in the past with a sports hernia(Gilmore's Groin as it is commonly know as). I had both sides operated on but it failed to completely clear up. Speaking to a surgeon recently he told me how now he and a lot of his colleagues prefer an approach when treatment and the building up of core muscles around the groin area is seen as a better approach.

be fair, the confed cup is there to 'test' the venues, infrastructure etc for the world cup. It a great idea from a planning perspective.

Don't underestimate the benefit to the countries who go too. Spain will acclimatise better this year having spent time there already, played in the stadiums etc.
