I find it weird how he's viewed with a distinct lack of affection by a lot of our support. Listen to him on the radio and you can hear how much he loves the club. And not the most consistent or prolific player but a great squad player in his day. I'd give my right arm, well, someones's, for a player like him to ease the burden on Torres today.

He was very good indeed. He wasn't what some might call a 'high concept' player, in the sense that you didn't immediately think of his speed or his height or any other distinguishing factor, but he had a very decent all-round game and scored plenty of goals.

he wasn't a squad player at all cc. he was first choice until rush came along. he was fairly prolific as well.

I didn't mean it in the rotation sense, one game in every 5 or whatever, that just didn't happen that much then, I remember him well being first choice, I just meant that he was one of the squad rather than one of the superstars in the team.

Having said that he was one the bench a lot in his first season and in his last couple.

You're reight on the prolific bit - just checked - he scored more than I thought he did - average just over 1 in 3.

Played in the same Primary School as my Uncle, apparently he was f***ing boss! Got some team photos somewhere.

Has always come across as a decent fella who loves the club from what I can tell.

He cracked on to my mum once by distracting my dad with some of his england caps.

That was quite weird

I once posted in a thread that he was one of our underrated players of history and i am absolutely certain it was YOU who said that he was really not that good.

The 'not..prolific' and 'squad player' inaccuracies have been dealt with, so might I also suggest that he was a very consistent player as well. Not one to let you down. Agree with you completely that someone like that would be perfect for us today.

I misread that by placing the word "off" after 'cracked'. I was about to agree that seeing that would indeed have been weird.

I dont' know what your problem is.

I clearly remember the chanting on the kop in the 70's that alluded to that part of his game that regularly departed from perceptual accuracy.

When he came back on against Arsenal in the 3rd SF Replay all bandaged up and obviously concussed, it's suggested it was because Tommy Smith chased him out of the Dressing Room, but I suspect he was the kind of straightforward, honest pro who would have come on anyway.

Iirc, even by the standards of that team, he had a reputation as a serious drinker.
