There is a brilliant piece of PR doing the rounds at the moment and we should give credit to where credit is due. Liverpool are one of the biggest names and biggest clubs in the World, any player being linked would immediately draw the attention of the Worlds media. In doing so it would bump the price of any proposed transfer fee up through the roof, just look at the Chelsea and Man City deals going through.

So by allowing or even feeding the media with the Liverpool are stuck for cash headlines it might help us with any stumbling block.

Over the past few weeks we have seen the media gathering momentum on Liverpool’s plight adding fuel to the story line. Is it a coincidence it has happened just when the transfer window has opened? I don’t think so and if it is true then it is a brilliant piece of misinformation.

Rumour has it that Rafa wanted assurances about his transfer budget prior to signing on the dotted line, stories of £20 and even £30 million being available. What would happen if at the time, Liverpool went out for Silva or Villa? The fee would rise and very quickly be out of our reach.

What could Liverpool do? If my assumption is right then they slowly leak information about the state of our finances. Did we not already know that we had to pay in excess of £30 million in interested? Wasn’t that already made crystal clear when the refinancing was made? So the actual figure was more, not a killer in the grand scheme of things.

Looking at the Barry deal, the media jumped on it stating that Liverpool lost out to Manchester Cities millions, did we? Was he really a target? He might have been at one time, who knows for sure if he was when the window opened. Silva IS!!! We know this from the many reports dotted around and Rafa himself made enquiries only for the link to be leaked and he withdrew. So what now?

I think it is still on but Rafa is using as much misinformation as possible, links to players like Lavezzi and Glen Johnson, even Michael Owen has been bought to the fore. Could they be part of the master plan that Rafa has? More and more stories hit the headlines and ever linked site under the sun is wanting a piece of the Liverpool demise, they love it. Let them!

For now we, like the rest of the waiting World have to wait to see what transpires. If I am right then expect Silva within the next two weeks, if not then we are in trouble and I have overestimated the manager we trust. Our financial situation is not the best but we are better off than most, we have fans who love the club through wind and the rain throughout the World. Time will tell.

gets said every year, this.

It does.

And I'm not sure that coming across as strapped for cash does us any favours in attracting the very best talent

I'm sure that thrashing Man Utd and Madrid last year and having the best manager, keeper, defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder / second striker, and striker in the world helps to attract talent.

Of course.

To be honest Dave, I think this has more to do with us G&H coming up for refinancing and the very real sh*t they're in than any clever spin.

This is how conspiracy theories start. Most likely it's the anti liverpool elements in the press worrying that we're finally challengers and trying to destabilize us.

I don't think anyone really thought we didn't have around £20m net of sales to spend did they?

We may even have a shade more than that.

We're clearly not going to make any other major signings (assuming Johnson goes through) without selling a few from the first team (squad) though.

Watch this space ;)

Tend to agree with you.

I think Rafa will buy 3 players. One semi big purchase. A solid back up, probably a CB. And a decent younger player willing to be a squad member, maybe a LM or striker depending on who he spends the most on.

And he'll do it without spending £50 mil. Probably £30-35 mil plus wages.

Rafa hasn't even spent a penny yet though

I'm sure there's a Johnson toilet seat gag in there somewhere but i cant be arsed to think of one

He might be a costly signing but I would not put him in the bracket of 'big name'.

We all consider people in a different way Rory - you only have to look at Igor for instance LOL

Seriously Rafa seems to have been able to jiggle things around and fund this one by using an existing debt to the club and the sale of one or two players. Thus far he has not spent anything, so, I expect a big name coming from somewhere. Could Tevez be the Silva lining?

We have money.....as I keep saying, and most think I am talking crap.

I think we have decent money and have done all along and I also wouldn't trust the view of an ex-player as far I could throw him.

It all depends who the player is. I wouldn't trust most, but I would this one. I also posted that we had money before I was with him, someone else has told me we are OK, but admittedly that person is employed by LFC and wouldn't say otherwise.

We're in a great deal of financial trouble. To say otherwise is nonsense. However standing still is impossible in this league and the financial trouble we are in will deepen if we don't continue to invest in the first team squad. Hicks and Gillet know this (now) and as such money will be there for the manager to strengthen.

The issue will worsen over the next couple of seasons as 20m net gets you less and less but for now, where we are, who our saleable assets are, we're good for this summer.

I can conclude this without an ex-player helping me and I've spoken to ex-players, ones who I respect and who seem intelligent and every single one has spoken s**** on the whole about off pitch matters.

And where did you get the 20m net from?

If we were in real trouble Rafa wouldn't have signed his extension, or would have other players. The fact that our owners are in huge amounts of debt, the club is on sound footing. Our debt is under control, we may not like it, but it's not a concern.

Getting new owners with more money will benefit the club I have no doubt, but since we have had G&H we have progressed in the league, and spent good money and got the best striker in the worrld. These facts spoil it for all the anti-owners. They are not ideal but they are not ruining us like many think they are.
