The double Olympic gold medallist and lifelong Chelsea supporter . . .urged John Terry to put his critical Champions League final miss behind him.

"If I could tell him one thing, it would be to forget it", Coe said, "It's over, it's history, and just be relieved that it happened for your club rather than in a World Cup final for England"

I'm sure that I heard Fernando Alonso say he was a Liverpool fan when interviewed yesterday at the Monaco GP.

Michael Carrick had entry to the pit-lane and the interviewer asked Alonso what he thought about the mancs et al and Alonso replied 'I don't know, I support Liverpool'

Shoot me down in flames if I heard this wrong....

He is. Was interviewed on the BBC, a few weeks ago and said it.

Anyway, poor Racist Stan Laurel gets a letter of the PM.

Gordon Brown tells sad John Terry: I know how you feel!

Exclusive by Bob Roberts Political Editor 26/05/2008

Gordon Brown has sent a message of sympathy to Chelsea skipper John Terry, whose missed penalty cost his team the Champions League trophy.

The PM knew how Terry was feeling - he wrote his message as he was facing a wipeout in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election.

After watching Terry collapse in tears following defeat by Manchester United, Mr Brown wrote that he had nothing to be ashamed of.

He said it was in troubled times that true leaders showed their courage and character by fighting back and going on to victory.

Mr Brown told Terry he was "an inspiration" and "a natural leader".

United won 6-5 on penalties after the score was 1-1 at the end of extra-time.

A source close to Terry said: "He was surprised and touched to receive a personal letter from the Prime Minister.

The letter offered him some comfort and suggested that his strength of character would see him through a difficult time.

"John was very grateful that he had made the effort to contact him."

Downing Street refused to comment, saying only: "It was a private message."

But a senior Labour source said: "People may not believe it, but this is the measure of the man.

"He believes in standing by people when they are in trouble.

"He has spoken about it often, how it is at difficult times that people show their true character and their true strength. He believes they can draw strength from defeats and go on to new victories."

Mr Brown has spoken about how he draws inspiration from sport.

He once told the Mirror: "It is on the front pages of newspapers that you find stories of human failure.

"It is on the back pages you find the stories of inspiration."

He watched the Champions League final last Wednesday night in his flat above Downing Street.

But No10 refused to say which team he supported.

Scot Gordon Brown once caused great controversy when he said Paul Gascoigne's goal against Scotland in Euro 96 was his favourite football moment
