Gary Ablett claims his reserves could have scored more in their Dallas Cup opener against FK Slavija – despite the game ending 7-1.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina side were dismantled on Sunday night thanks to goals from Gerardo Bruna (2), Ray Putterill (2), Craig Lindfield, Ryan Flynn and Jay Spearing.

It puts the Reds top of Super Group B ahead of their second fixture against Tigres from Mexico tonight.

Ablett said: "The game was comfortable and we could have had more. Their goalkeeper played very well.

"They were a niggly side: pulling shirts and falling over. They played man for man but we managed to get a 2-1 lead at half-time.

"We passed the ball really well in the second half, ran the legs off them and they couldn't cope in the last 30 minutes."

The game was played out in the famous Pizza Hut Park Stadium in front of a crowd which included Tom Hicks Jr.

Ablett added: "It was a fantastic venue and a great pitch. There were about 4,000 or 5,000 people there and they saw a good performance from a good Liverpool team.

"We spoke to Tom Hicks Jr and his brother – they've been magnificent and have really looked after us. They're taking us to see their ice hockey team on Wednesday and possibly the NBA on Thursday. The hospitality has been fantastic."

Despite all this, the 10-day trip hasn't gone entirely to plan so far, with Hungarian trio Krisztian Nemeth, Peter Gulacsi and Andras Simon having to stay behind due to paperwork issues.

Ablett is hoping this will be sorted on Tuesday and they'll be available for the third group game against Japanese team Ryutsu Keizai on Wednesday night.

Craig Lindfield netted a hat-trick while Martin Kelly and Mikel San Jose were also on target as Liverpool's reserves thrashed Mexican outfit Tigres 5-1 in their second game in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup.

Gary Ablett's men, who smashed seven goals past FK Slavija, in their opening match of the tournament, have maintained their position at the top of Super Group B and now seem certainties to move into the semi-finals of the competition.

Despite the convincing scoreline, Ablett was less than impressed with his side's performance at Richland College field, and believes that playing two games in as many days may have caught up with his youngsters.

"We got ourselves into a 2-0 lead in the first half without ever playing well," he said. "To be honest we played poorly throughout the game. They passed the ball better than we did but they never had anyone who was going to really hurt us.

"They deserved to get their goal to make it 2-1 at half time and when we got the lads in at the break we told them some home truths.

"Nothing really changed though in the second half. We never really got to grips with the game at all. Whether it was the journey catching up with us or whether it was because it was our second game in two days, I don't know.

"On the plus side we defended very well and Craig Lindfield can be pleased with scoring a hat-trick.

"This is tournament football and so we will take the win even if we would have wanted to play a lot better. We've played two now, won two and scored twelve goals so in that respect it's pleasing."

The young Reds now have a couple of days to rest before playing their final group game on Wednesday afternoon against Ryutsu Keizai Kashiwa from Japan.

"They've won one and lost one from their first two games so they're going to have to beat us by a lot of goals to stop us going through," added Ablett.

"We've probably lost Ryan Crowther for the rest of the week with a hamstring strain and the other problem we have now is that four of our lads were booked against Tigres so if they pick up another booking on Wednesday they'll be out of the semi-final. That's a bit disappointing from our point of view.

"We've had two games out here and the referees in each have interpreted the rules of the games completely differently. I suppose that's what you get with international football.

"It's important we give the lads some rest now but on Tuesday we'll be taking them to visit a local hospital where they'll be handing out some gifts that we've brought over. It's really important that they get to see the impact they can have on young children.

"There'll be some time in the afternoon for a bit of shopping but then it'll be an early night to make sure they are well rested for the game on Wednesday."

Liverpool are hoping to welcome Hungarian trio Krisztian Nemeth, Peter Gulacsi and Andras Simon to the squad in time for Wednesday's game after sorting out the paperwork issues which have delayed their entry into the USA.

Nice too see the admin side of the club keeping up their tradition of being shambolic.

It's supposed to be quite a nice stadium, despite the classy name.

It's a dump TBH. Looks like a B&Q from the outside and a hockey field from the inside.

The problem is still unresolved due to a 'tie caught in fax machine' mishap from an un-named senior individual at the club.

We will update the information on this page and in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXIX Communications Center at the Crowne Plaza-Addison as soon as possible.

Please remember that we can not make any determinations on rescheduling of games until any bad weather has passed and we can determine what fields are available for games.

If our Wednesday match gets pushed back to Thursday it might give the lads a Bob Hope of getting there in time

YOUNG REDS GO GOAL CRAZY IN DALLAS

Paul Eaton 19 March 2008

Liverpool's reserves have completed their group games in the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup with a 9-0 thrashing of Japanese outfit Ryutsu Keizai Kashiwa.

Craig Lindfield, Ray Putterill and Emiliano Insua all netted twice while Mikel San Jose, Ryan Flynn and Gerardo Bruna were also on target as Gary Ablett's men made it three wins from three in Super Group B to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

They will now face a combined Sporting Lisbon and Benfica side in the last four of the competition at the Pizza Hut Stadium at 9pm on Friday evening.

"It was almost too easy for us today," said Ablett. "We got ourselves into a 3-0 lead before half time and then they had a man sent off fifteen minutes into the second half.

"After that it was a bit of a rout and we managed to score a lot more goals. Even though the scoreline was convincing I think some of our decision making was poor at times because we should have won that game 14 or 15-0.

"We had so much time and space on the ball but there were occasions where we didn't do the right things and that was disappointing for me as the manager. At times we lost our discipline and our shape.

"We've won the group easily though and at the end of the day you can only beat what is put in front of you. We played well in the first game, poorly in the second and I'd say we did okay tonight.

"We'll need to be better in the semi-final though because we'll be up against much tougher opposition."

The Reds' only injury concerns ahead of the semi-final are Ryan Crowther and Gary Mackay Steven while Hungarian trio Krisztian Nemeth, Peter Gulacsi and Andras Simon should join up with the squad in Dallas in time to play a part.

"It will be good to welcome those three lads into the squad," added Ablett. "Hopefully they'll be able to fly out tomorrow morning and join up with us in time to prepare for Friday's game.

"We also had four lads on bookings before tonight's game who would have missed the semi-final had they picked up another yellow card, but thankfully they all kept out of trouble and so we have no suspension issues for Friday night."

ABLETT BLASTS YOUNGSTERS

Liverpool reserves boss Gary Ablett was insistent his team hadn't played well over their last four games, despite crushing World Dallas IX 16-0 in the Super4 qualifier of the Dallas Cup game played this afternoon.

"I was disappointed with our general play. We made it easy for ourselves by going 6-0 up in the first 15 minutes and after that we seemed to take our foot off the gas."

However, Ablett did offer an encouraging word to Krisztian Nemeth, the young Hungarian striker who joined up with the team on the morning of the match, but still managed to score 12 goals during the game. "Krisztian took his goals well, but I was disappointed with some of his movement, and he made two or three wrong decisions that he'll learn from."

For their next opponents, Liverpool face the Harlem Globetrotter stand-ins in what could be the first of an 8 game play-off tournament against their three other rivals.
