Dalglish: Time to get behind Rafa

KENNY DALGLISH was this year’s winner of the Bill Shankly Memorial award and the Liverpool legend used his acceptance speech to back current Reds boss Rafa Benitez.

Accepting the award from Benitez and former team-mate Ian Rush, Dalglish told the audience at the ECHO Arena that the time has come for everyone at Anfield to get behind the Spaniard.

He said: “The troubles at the club that have been well documented in the media have certainly not done the manager of the players any favours.

“It is time for everyone to get right behind the manager because there is only one person who should be in charge at the football club and that is the manager.”

Dalglish also paid a warm tribute to Shankly, whom tried to sign him for Liverpool when he was just 15 years old.

“I came down from Glasgow and played in a practice game against Southport when I was 15. Shanks wanted to sign me then but I was really shy at that stage and it didn’t happen.

“But although I was never fortunate enough to play under the great man I know full well that he laid the principles down for all of us who have been fortunate enough to play for this great club to follow.

“Without the qualities he brought to the club I don’t think the club would be what it is today.

“And make no mistake about it, Liverpool is a very special club and I still have a very strong attachment to it,

“I regard Merseyside as my home and all my kids grew up here and I regard myself as having been very privileged to have played a small part in the history of this great club.

“I was very fortunate to play under some great managers and in teams with some great players so when I look back I have to be very grateful for everything I achieved as a player.

“When I first signed in 1977 John Toshack gave me two bits of advice – don’t lose your accent and don’t over-eat, So at least I got one right!@

Asked by compère Jeff Stelling of Sky Sports fame what advice he would offer to any would-be managers, Dalglish replied: “Turn Sky Sports off of a Saturday afternoon!”

My dad has recently become mates with the King

He starts every sentence with "as I was saying to Kenny" now. It's annoying

I think Bi gal and the jumper burner should feck off and let their parents log on - would be far more interesting to talk to.

but they would soon realise you are a c***

I hate all that name dropping business. I was saying the same thing to Will Smith in New York.

p.s. its hard to imagine how a former player could be any better than Kenny

I hope Dalglish's words are going to have an effect on some of the muppets on this forum.

Sadly, I doubt it.

Probably not they never saw him play on skysports

I'd rather not talk to you as I am not bothered with the boring members of your family. Go munch a carpet or whatever it is you get up to and let the interesting Suttons on.

“... there is only one person who should be in charge at the football club and that is the manager.”

That's core to how I believe the club should be run. Managers manage, players play and directors should ensure sure the club is run to support the other two. That was the philosophy on which the club was built and it has to be the one on which it moves forward.

I have one of Kenny's shirts, signed and personalised.

I think it was the one he wore in the 81 european cup final.

Isn't what you say on a public forum something you say publicly?

That is quality, mate. As a collector of that sort of stuff, I'm not embarassed to say that I'm jealous as f*ck :D . I've a few contacts who I've tried to get signed match shirts from but haven't found one that I want yet.
