Riise : I want to end career at Liverpool

It's not online yet but JAR is interviewed in this morning's Daily Post saying he wants to end his career at Liverpool.

"I have 18 months on my contract and have no intention of leaving. Liverpool is the club closest to my heart and it's where I belong. If it wasn't for Liverpool I wouldn't be the player I am today (insert own joke here ;) ) and there is no chance I'm going to ask for a transfer."

"I was happy with my performances pre-season, but when the season started I felt I wasn't reaching my true level. I've noticed the fans haven't been too happy with my form and rightly so.Now I think I'm getting my sharpness back and hopefully returning to my real level"

I'm sure he does want to end his career at Liverpool, why wouldn't he. Doesn't mean he will of course!

He's been pretty much a fixture in the starting 11 for years, so it's no surprise he wants to stay, he's never had decent competition. That's what he need more than anything, and at least this season with Alvaro and Aurelio, finally we have better players for that position to give him a much needed kick up the aris.

As a squad player, he's very handy, but a couple years down the line, would he be so keen to stay if he was only starting 15 - 20 games a season.

If he can get back to what he was in the first 3 or 4 years at the club then great. He's an excellent utility player

But if the club gets a serious bid in January i'd expect them to accept it and then it's upto the player

I was watching the gary mac derby the other day. And i noticed a huge difference in physique with riise. he seems to have put on a couple of stone since then.

perhaps thats the reason why he turns like the QE2

Too much weight training in the Gym, its a trap a lot of footballers fall into, myself included, I went from being on of the three fastest players in our sqaud to become one of the slowest during a period of 3 years, I had to change my style of play completely to compensate for this.

The player most noticeable going through the same problem in the Liverpool sqaud of today is Harry Kewell, he used to beat the fullback with pace but he cant do that anymore, probably because of using too much time in the Gym when being out injured, I noticed it on his neck, its a typical sign.

Before anyone starts having a go at me because I used myself as an example, I really dont care, so save your time going there, I just wanted to comment on it since there probably are some truth in it.

Got me too that, when I was in training for France '98.

Nah, the lad has a good attitude in general. He's just not a very good player.

thats fair enough, I do alot of gym work now, however, I do boxing which has made me quicker and lighter on my feet.

its all about getting the balance.

oh, and riise didnt play in the Gary Mac derby!

So you had to change your style of play by executing more perfect backheels? :)

Seriously though I agree, players can bulk up too much and lose some of their pace to the overall detrment of their game and I think Riise could be one of those. He still bottles 50/50s mind extra bulk or not...

However I'd say more players just lose some of the natural athleticism when they hit their mid twenties, particularly if they suffer a few bad injuries along the way. Owen had explosive pace as a kid, but injuries took that away in his early twenties.

I think the achilles rupture is what has taken much of Kewell's pace away more than time in the gym.

Don't make that into something it is not, I mean I do that every day.

Kewell does seem slower these days, but I find it disturbing that you have pinpointed the reason for it by looking at his neck.

Also, people bulk up in the gym to make them quicker and more explosive. This naturally improves their pace. However, their agility, stamina etc. could easily deteriorate if they do it too much.

I don't think thats the case though and I don't think he is that much worse the 3-4 years ago. I just think we have better, quicker, more skilfull players now and the game is just passing him by. More is expected of him now and he just can't deliver as he either panics and belts it long, or panics and misplaces a pass when the better players around him are expecting him to be at their standard. Torres, Kuyt, Babel, etc, will make a run that Gerrard, Masch, Alonso, Agger, etc could pick out. Riise simply can't and so the play constantly breaks up when he gets the ball.

Totally agree - I said yesterday that since Aurelio, Benayoun etc have come into the side and we're passing the ball better Riise has stood out like a sore thumb for me with his lack of technical ability.

All the other players in our midfield and attack in the last couple of games have been technically sound.

So despite the fact that he has put some decent runs and shots in (against Besiktas in particular), it was noticeable to me that passing moves often broke down or reached a dead end when the ball reached JAR.

Ideally I'd like him as an option in certain games here and there throughout the season, but I think he'd want to play more often than that.

You have to wonder why the club have allowed JAR's contract to run down to 18 months despite his pleas (this is just the latest) to sign up for life.

He has been playing as though his mind is elsewhere - the transfer talk has distracted him, probably because there is something in it.

I still like him as a player but his performances are becoming progressively worse and something has to give. We either sell him while he can still command a decent fee or give him a new contract as an incentive to recover his best form.

He's a competent left back and a poor left winger.

He's not good enough at a technical level for us and a lot of our attacking moves seem to slow down/end when he receives the ball as he's not particularly comfortable with it. The difference when Aurelio is in the side is remarkable. Even against Besiktas, his "hoofs" were generally accurate enough to allow Crouch a flick on. Riise seems to put his foot through the ball and hope.

He's been a good servant to the club, but we need players who are more confident on the ball than him. I'd take a good offer for him if it came in.
