would have been 100 years young today.

Master of his era, some say he'd be worth loads today but the game is different so who knows.

He'd be worth nothing, he'd be 100.

Mind you Newcastle and Boro would probably offer around ten million.

I drove past Goodison on Saturday, they have big banners up around the ground to celebrate the fact. Let's be honest, they've f*ck all else to celebrate have they? He was a great player mind, by all accounts.

'keep your head over it, Dixie!'

I remember hearing he had a stainless steel surgical plate inserted in his skull after a head injury - mind you, could have been just from heading a 25lb wet casey in those days. he was a fine player, but apparently made more use of his elbows, hips and knees in getting at the ball than Shearer ever did...different era. he would n't be able to stop after ten minutes for a Woody and a cuppa thesedays.

Bill Shankly loved Dixie Dean and was sat next to him at the derby when Dean died. Shankly unknowingly gave Dean his epitaph before the game when he introduced him. He lorded him to the skies telling everyone around that here was a man who belonged amongst the greatest of the greats. That's good enough for me.

And that was near the end of Murph's long scouting career when everyone was saying he was past it and his cateracts were kicking in...

I bet there was loads of Reds that hated him with a passion and shouted every name under the sun at him, all the same. This was before the [re]gentrification of soccer, remember?
