Harry Kewell's agent blasts Liverpool FC over injury treatment

HARRY KEWELL’S agent has launched an astonishing attack on the British medical system and claimed the treatment he received in this country was responsible for his injury-prone reputation.

Bernie Mandic made the blistering accusations in Australia where Kewell, now at Galatasaray, is currently being treated for a groin problem.

Kewell joined Liverpool from Leeds in 2003 but managed just 93 league appearances in five years at Anfield.

Now his agent has blasted the treatment his client received in England while also claiming Rafa Benitez has made enquiries about where to get Reds players treated.

“He (Kewell) lost three-and-a-half years of his career at Liverpool because the guys over there in England had, quite literally, no idea what they were talking about,” said Mandic to the Sydney Morning Herald.

“You have to wonder what they’re doing over there. Perhaps they’re trying to protect their reputations, but they’re certainly not trying to protect their players.

“I think it’s a disgrace, as I think it was a disgrace the way Harry was treated.”

Mandic claims the medical care Kewell received in England was inferior to the treatment he now gets in Australia.

“The reason he gets treated out here (in Australia) now is because we have the best medical staff in the world,” continued Mandic.

“It’s a damn shame we didn’t come here earlier.

“Now he doesn’t take any chances. He likes to get second opinions, and the bottom line is that Australian doctors have never let him down.”

Liverpool’s progress this season has been affected by a succession of injuries to key players, chiefly Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

And Mandic reveals that Benitez has made enquiries in light of concerns about Torres.

“We had Rafa Benitez call him the other night inquiring who these guys were because Fernando Torres has got such major problems now,” Mandic said.

“Look at Liverpool. Why is it that over so many recent years, usually around November, lots of their key players are injured?

“It’s always soft-tissue injuries.

“How come other clubs, like Arsenal, don’t have that sort of a dilemma? And why do their players recover quicker?

“There’s logical reasons for all of this.”

Mandic’s blast will come as a surprise to Liverpool’s medical staff who have been credited with returning Alberto Aquilani to full fitness this season.

The former Roma player had been critical of the treatment he received in Italy but has since paid tribute to Liverpool for helping him overcome a longstanding ankle problem.

wow, a player blaming others for his failings

This has nothing to do that he is playing at a level now where he can still excell at 60% effort

He's just been ruled out for two months aswell! Must be the result of the horrific treatment he suffered here.

No Bernie, quite literally, you don't know how to use that phrase properly.

remember when Kewell was having those pain killing injections into the joint, risking infection ? Wasn't that while he was on duty with Australia ?

Having said that, and putting aside the fact that Mandic is a big mouth with big hair and loud suits, there may be valid questions to ask about the training regime and medical care that has given us injury meltdown. Not just this season its happened either.

It's a bugbear of mine too!

Jamie Redknapp is the worst culprit

No doubt he'll be back for any cup finals and the world cup

It's due to the lack of rotation in these last couple of seasons

It's a bit funny that he says Arsenal doesn't have problems and their players recover quickly. You know that every time Wenger says so and so is out for x number of weeks, expect x * 3 at least.

Rosisky, Walcott, Eduardo and Van Persie never get injured though

He may have a point.

The management of occupational injury in Australia is quite possibly more advanced than it is here.

aye but that's possibly one accurate point out of about ten in that article.

Bernie "I make a living from one player" Mandic is talking through his a***. Kewell was his own worst enemy, trying to recover just in time for World Cups and CL finals. He never really looked like he ever got into match shape while he was with us. He was a complete bomb. It's not like he is setting the world alight in Turkey. It was just an easy extended paycheck for Harry Boy. Maybe he ought to examine why unfit and overweight Australian players go off the boil. See Mark Viduca.

is kewell's contract due to run out soon?

could bernie be attracting attention to him for another payday?

say it isn't so!

umm - just did a quick search and he signed a 2 year contract in july 2008.

just sayin...

Australians being modest about...er...nothing, as usual.

modern stadiums have those upright seats for the players on the bench, how much would it cost for us to take a simple measure like that to further protect the players from injury?

Agreed.

Nando's got me seriously worried, it can't all be Spain's fault.

Couple of them where injuries on the pitch on international duty which are unavoidable. I think a big part of it is him not getting back to full fitness before he starts playing again.
