Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing is to hold discussions at Anfield regarding a contract extension, skysports.com understands.

The 20-year-old impressed as a second-half substitute in last week's thrashing of Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, offering a sign of his potential.

And that form is thought to have made manager Rafa Benitez keen to secure Spearing's long-term future.

The youngster made his competitive first-team debut in December 2008, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 Champions League win against PSV Eindhoven.

Spearing was the captain of the Liverpool Under 18 side who won the FA Youth Cup in 2007.

Think he's a cracking player myself - but could do with being a bit bigger.

He has the perfect role model in Mascherano to learn from, somebody thats a similar size but that hasn't stopped him becoming a world class player.

Personally id sell Lucas in the summer sign Barry and promote Spearing to that 4th choice midfield position, you could make the argument that Spearing is more suited to the English game than Lucas, plus with the 6+5 rule on the horizon it would help with our quota of English players which is something you have to consider at the moment.

Think we could sell Lucas and sign Barry without it costing us too much, because Barry will be in the final year of his contract, we could possibly get him for under £10 million.

he's a good player and he's got potential to make it.

If we just wrote off the ressies after a poor run of games, we'll not see Jay today.

A lots of ressies did have a lots of potentials, I believe this is not just Jay alone. Darby, Nemeth..are knocking on the doors.

It would be no points having ressies if we dont give them a go at first team. We need to have confidences and give them time and exposure and they will learn a lots more by training with the first team.

Agreed. Fortunately Lucas has lowered the bar for what's acceptable from a young first teamer, and I think this can only do Jay's prospects good.

hes taller than masher

Except he isn't.

He does look tiny on the pitch, although I don't think that's necessarily a big problem.

into a right back

I think Spearing could come in at right back when Arbeloa is out; do a job for the first team and prove he has what it takes without the level of immediate responsibility which comes from being in the centre of midfield for a club like ours.

Starting out that way definitely helped Stevie Gerrard acclimatise to top level football. I think considering Spearing's lack of physical size right back could even be his position long term if he's to make it at the top.

He had a really nice little cameo against Madrid and needs to build on that. It shows how giving a youngster a chance with 20 minutes left in a game thats dead can really help him move his game up a level, and revitalise a stale match.

I'd like to see Pacheco on the bench for home games and given a similar chance when possible.

I think it's safe to say that Rafa sees him as a potential first team squad player if he's getting a new contract which is good.

Think he's probably ahead of Plessis now in the first team squad and just behind Lucas.

He's a small kid but has played centre back which shows a good reading of the game and he must be at least combative in the air to play centre back to the level he did. Played really well there.

He's got right back written all over him with his tackling ability, pace and energy.

You like that young scouser look on the lads?

No need to get all Smithdown. That's not what I meant and you know it :hmm:

he looks like he's 12

He must have started smoking when he was.

Even if he can get to the level of Guthrie, we'll make decent money off him. I expect a loan deal for him (and Plessis) next season.
