5. Xabi Alonso

4. Paul Scholes

3. Patrick Viera

2. Roy Keane

1. Claude Makelele

As the list counted down and Keane made No. 2 I was dreading him naming Lampard - good to see he didnt :) Also put a word out to all the little Barca midfielders as they are terrible to play against ............. and still no mention of Lampard :D

There is that video of the players (and all Anfield) celebrating following the 2005 CL semi-final win. At one point Gerrard and Makelele shake hands and Gerrard points his finger at Makelele and tells him something along the lines of "You're the no.1"

Scholes,Vieira and Keane were all better than Makelele IMO.

Not a slight on Makelele at all,he was the best in the world at what he did,but all those three offered that he simply couldn't.

absolutely

but Makalele probably stopped Gerrard playing more than any of the others = his most difficult opponent

can't really see why else he'd give him the No.1 spot

Makelele never showed himself much in a game in the same way that the others did but he held a team together and was always noticeable when missing. Just ask Real Madrid.

i'm surprised you're surprised he'd even think of mentioning lampard. not because he should, but because he's just not that good

Doesn't Rio Ferdinand reckon Paul Dickov or someone ridiculous like that is one of the people he most hates playing against? I'm sure loads of CBs would have Kevin Davies near the top of their lists as well.

Makelele is obviously a far better player than either of them but it does just reinforce the point that, as you say, 'most difficult opponent' is not the same as 'best player'.

The list was actually called something like "Gerrard's 5 most difficult opponents". So, you're right. It's not the same.
