Yeah, I was actually thinking of Hamann when I was typing the post. In fairness to ged he made a couple of excellent signings early on in his tenure. Henchoz and Gary Mac are two other good examples.

Yes we can quote the C*** he bought later but why? He could obviously spot a good player...but then seemed to lose the plot...all in that summer!! Madness!! (I don't class Pongolle and Le Tallec as rubbish as they were some of the best young players around...it is a pity they didn't fulfill their potential)

I think Houllier's heart scare changed him. He came back to the club, we'd just finished second and he decided to try and force us on to the next level. It was the right time to try and make the step up, but he just went for the wrong players.
