unbelievable...

we could only dream of spending that kind of cash on one player..... but if we did spend 20mill I would expect it to be blown on a f***ing good player and not him.

Hopefully they'll sign him. Their midfield has been excellent this season with Carrick sitting deep and allowing Scholes, Giggs and Ronaldo to push on. Hargreaves signing will upset that balance.

we can all laugh at the fee's they are paying but they have a 6 point lead in the league, still in Champions League and FA Cup and will likely go far in the them.

The end justify the means.

Wow if only we had that money

still if we are successful with Fifa

Marcherano for 5m vs Owen H for 20m

I know which I would prefer

Lets sign Mascherano first eh?!

A year ago, the M*ncs were in for Mascherano, cheslea too -15m.

If we end up signing him permanently for half that, i'll be made up.

Oh and 20m for Hargreaves is a joke - i thought chelsea were mugs for paying what they do for players but Man U's pencht for paying over the odds(Veron, ferdinand) is hilarious.

Its stick or twist time for Ferguson and I can see why he might want to twist, as this is may be Utd's best chance of winning the league for years.

Abramovich may throw silly money at the right players in the summer and/or this might be the last season Scholes and Giggs have in them.

wtf has that got to do with spending 20m on hargreaves

How much they're spending doesn't matter if they can afford it, and clearly they think they can afford it.

He'll improve them a good deal.

He might - except Bayern have turned them down :D

And come the summer, with DIC on board we may well spend that kind of money on one player - but of a higher calibre than Hargreaves, who I rather like.

It's an outrageous fee, but that's a very good point, Fred. In the context of trying to win the league, there's no doubt that Hargreaves (a capable and tidy player) will add more to their push than either O'Shea or Fletcher, imo.

I also think the free money they got from the Mikel/Chelsea debacle must be taken into account when looking at the money they've paid out on Carrick. The time to buy is when you're strong, and with ManUtd sitting pretty at the top of the league, and Ferguson getting no younger, I can understand why they're going gung-ho on this one.

Re the money from Mikel - when you're the better part of $600m in debt with large interest payments to make, that doesn't count for much.

Don't get obsessed with the debt, it's hardly important. A well-run business ought to have a good bit of debt relative to their earnings.

He is not a £20 mill player, its amazing before and in the early part of the WC he is slated and then has a couple of reasonable games and everyone raves about him. He is a decent player no more no less and i think he will unbalance their set up either that or he is going to be a very expensive squad player.

Regardless of the debt, a £10m freebie for a player that's never even set foot in your dressing room goes a long way to softening the blow of paying £16m for somebody like Carrick. I don't even see how that's up for debate.

I wanted him as a potential Hamann replacement 2 or 3 years ago. Then again, he was being touted for about £4m.

He is nowhere near worth £20m though, it amuses me when the press link Xabi AND Kuyt to Real for £25m combined.
