I kind of get it in that it seems like we went to a lot of effort in a convoluted new system to end up getting arguably the form side in Europe but that could happen under the old system too and ultimately the reward was not having to play last round. A couple of good teams will go out this round and some really average ones will go through. It opens a bit after this round, it will be tough but ultimately we should be beating them - smashing crap from their own poor league shouldn't mean much and if weather whatever storm there may be tonight nothing in their history suggests they should feel confident about getting a result at Anfield if they need one.

This is true but it also gave us that magnificently cringe banner so it's not all bad It's the kind of thing United have always cared about though, the needy pricks. Same as getting Knighthoods. All part of their 'This is why we are the biggest' shtick.

What's he meant to do though if we don't offer him a contract he thinks is sufficient for him to stay? Sign anyway so we get a fee? Demand to be sold before his current contract is up? It's on him that he wants to go, it isn't on him that it will be for nothing.

Because he didn't deem it to be a sending off. VAR had to ask him to look again, presumably once he'd verified his age so he was OK to view scenes of extreme violence or whatever. It's a genuinely astonishing bit of refereeing. If he was told he could never ref again off the back of that then I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid.

I get why players care about them, to an extent, but even then the ones who are most arsed are generally wrong-uns. Fans shouldn't really give a s***.

Like there is no way I'm watching a 35 minute day in the life of our own players let alone some lad who plays for Wolves. I take it he visits sick kids and stuff after he's finished talking about his trabs and possibly when he's serving his latest ban for stealing someone's glasses or goving them a wedgie or whatever? That's great but I imagine it is just part of general media duties and isn't really relevant to whether he can keep himself sufficiently in check on the pitch, which is what really matters (the 'Good lad test' outside of that mostly being a self-congratulatory figment of imagination I reckon). I've no opinion on his character and it is only really relevant in so far as whether it impacts on his ability to do a job.

Better our players not winning it when they should then them winning it loads and we turn into a bunch of Real Madrid cryarses every time one of them doesn't.

He is never, ever winning the Ballon d'Or regardless of who he plays for. Absolute pie in the sky and just a reach on his behalf to try to justify the move.
