We'll also have a fullback who makes us more solid defensively to balance that out. So two changes really, if we get it right.

I'm sorry, that's insane 10 assists in his last 60 league games. It's good but it isn't irreplaceable and it is also diminishing returns from his earlier days. He got 13 just in the season we won the league. I know there is more to it than just assits but it is as good a metric as you'll get and the evidence is there that either he's dipped a bit or we've started to evolve differently or a bit of both. It absolutely can be. Aa it stand it isn't a positive because he's good and we've no idea what the plan to replace him or evolve the team is. He's been a proper wool over it all. That and the Google Switch thing. Just very weird and leaves him no defence from the accusation that he's been taking the piss.

There isn't really anyone like him and so he can't be directly replaced so obviously we lose something. No other good team has needed an Alexander-Arnold to be good though so we just need to find another way of doing it.

McManaman and Alonso both literally said us trying to do this was part of the reason they decided they wanted to leave. Seemed to happen loads in yesteryear as well - Shankly and Paisley bombing out stalwarts and them feeling resuntful over it. Either way, it isn't about whether I feel bad for them. It is about them thinking they should have been kept on and their attitude to us changing when they weren't. If people think Alexander-Arnold should stay thej their attitude will change to him when he doesn't. Like, he can't have it every way. I 100% get why he fancies Madrid and he should 100% get why that will change how people think of him. I imagine that he does but doesn't care, which is sound.

I don't blame him for the fact that it is a free - that is on the club. I'd feel the same level of 'meh' about him if he was going for a load of money. Where this is happens - getting sold against your will, not getting offered a renewal etc - I think the player is entitled to feel that it impacts negatively on their view of/relationship with the club, and that is fine so it goes both ways.

Defo Plus - and it is a bit s***house and annoys me when other teams benefit but whatever - it has the added bonus that if they become a key player for their loan club then they are weakened when they play us.
