I don't think that list is anywhere near as inspiring as you seem to think

I think in the short term we need to go back to getting young, hungry lads on an upward trajectory who still have a bit to prove. Maybe even a few who've been cast off by other 'big' clubs. Bobby, Mane (who was the real start of it all), Salah, Wijnaldum, Robbo, Fabinho. Then along the way you try to add a couple of proper stars - your Van Dijks (though even he still hadn't stuff to prove) and Allison's. Easier said than done of course and I reckon we're looking at minimum two years before we have the basis of a really good side again. But we're also probably in an era where you don't need to be really good to win the league so who knows, three good buys, a bit of luck with injuries and better management and we really should be miles better straight away.

We obviously didn't feel we needed him, it is 5 years since we bought a first team centre back. Which has been idiocy for at least the last 3 years of course. See also winger with genuine pace; proper holding midfielder/enforcer. The problems we have now are to some degree years in the making, just now with the perfect storm of awful management of the squad we do have.
