Yes he's a legend etc etc but.. People have been talking about how it might be better not to play him against all the crap teams and save him for the big games but last night was a pretty big game and he's an unused substitute. Was he simply not fit enough or has 'the change' now been made with regards to his status? The guys who played instead of him gave pretty decent performances it has to be said so what does the future hold? I must admit that if Agger/Skrtl is now the preferred first pairing I'd like to see Coates come in against the crap and to how he does rather than Carra because the long term future, Carra is not.

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions based on a one game team selection.

Don't think we played a high line.

At times in the first half we really did. There were a couple of moments where we were pressing Chelsea right back on to the edge of their box and Agger and Skrtel were both well over the half way line.

Showed the knobheads up who says Kenny has his favourites and he's scared to drop him anyway, thats for sure!

Realtively easy decision to leave him out as he was coming back form injury. Agger & Skrtel deserve to keep their place for the next league game, that's the decision to be made.

And Agger needs to stay fit

He'd be the perfect mentor to Coates; both getting some game time together could do us good in the long run.

He'trained all week and we are regularly told on here that Kenny is scared to leave him out.

Loved the way we played out from the back yesterday.

Can't see Carra getting back if Agger and Skrtel keep turning out those performances

he hasn't had a brilliant time against Drogba either, over the years, so another reason not to automatically throw him back in

he's s quad player, like all our players; Kenny left out 3 of his 5 main signings yesterday and brought back the 'out of favour' Maxi who put in a blinding 1st half shift

there isn't really anything to see here

There was a game plan and Carra didn't fit in. I think he still sees Carra as part of our best partnership, but certainly good to see that players who are playing well stay in the team.

Skrtel was superb as well.

whether we played a high line or not we had the mobility there to do it when and if it was required. that means the team can remain compact. we were able to defend pretty well high up the pitch 1st half and deep 2nd half. that's what you want.

think that's why those average position things are a bit of a nonsense. what's important is the lines of the team moving backwards and forwards together. my view is that with carragher in the side the back four don't move forward as readily as they could, or recover backwards as quickly.

Its not just a question of mobility. Its also about recycyling possession quickly and accurately.

Think the time has come for Carra to take a backseat. He'll remain a great option but for me, Skrtel (or Kelly) and Agger should be our main centre backs - providing Agger can stay fit!

Was pleased to see him sitting out.

Still kind of expect him to be back for the next game though. Will take a while of him sitting on his a*** to get out of that mindset.

Agger and Skrtel were chosen on merit, and after yesterday should be chosen for the next game on merit. I think thats about it for me.

I was a critic of Skrtel, but I'm glad to give the lad a lot of credit for his improvement over the last 6 months. The wild swing at that crossed ball in the 2nd half was a little glimpse of the mistake you still feel he has in him, but in general his play has been excellent. He has been our most improved player since Kenny came in I think, and I'd like to see him and Agger (who is class) as first choice partnership for the foreseeable future with rests here and there for Carra to fill in.

He seems to have an excellent attitude, and players who have that often improve with good coaches like Steve Clarke. Credit to him - he's the new Lucas!
