Now, I'm not generally in the habit of listening to Lawro, but he was on radio in Ireland over the weekend, and said that he'd been speaking to Dalglish since he took the job, and apparently, Kenny spoke about how there was no banter in the changing room at all when he arrived. No mickey taking, no fun, just a dour bunch with nobody really speaking to each other.

It rang true when I heard it - looking at us over the past while, our squad doesn't strike me as a fun place to be. It's easy to believe that we're lacking that spirit and bond these days.

I have a feeling this will be the same across the premiership, especially the bigger clubs

it's probably the same in other sports too

It's noticable that the effort on the pitch has improved since Dalglish came in, I've heard reports that he's injected the fun back into training as well. Apparently Hodgson's training consisted of the same things over and over again and became morale sapping.

It's obvious that something has given Torres a huge lift.

It's incredible to think of just how much damage Hodgson did to this club in the short time he was here.

Hodgson's training was all 11 v 11, focusing on repetition of "patterns of play". It even sounds s***.

Anyhow, Kenny reckoned he was goign to bring back that banter and fun - a difficult task with the mix of nationalities and cultures, I'd say. Few cheeky youngsters can't hurt.

Because of so many cultural differences or something?

I'm not sure personally, I dont see why that would be the case. I'm with the idea that we lack character and players who can assert themselves, most ours struggle to raise themselves let alone anyone around them. Nice boys maybe, but winners?

Pepe needs little encouragemnet judging by the tv and youtube coverage of him!!

Chelsea have a huge mix of cultures and nationalitits, but they always seemed to have a great spirit and togetherness under Mourinho. I suppose it's easier when you're winning.

I get the sense Arsenal don't have much of it.

players/ staff more professional maybe, not sure, it's just a perception of the current sportsman, look at tennis, boxing, cricket...etc

I think we differently lack players who assert themselves, we lack real winners in the team, we also don't have players willing to put pressure on referees (apart from carragher probably)

A character like might feel a bit out of water with the rest of the squad.

I think its an interesting observation this, first and foremost we need boss players but they have to live and breathe together. You've got to have a few characters in there, people need to have a laugh and a joke, the odd falling out even.

Kenny always used to say the team spirit when we were dominating football was the best he'd ever experienced and was a major part of our success. Literally like a family. It's a bigger task to bring a group of self indulged millionaires together mind.

Probably something to do with not being utilised like he was John Fashanu

I think it was Keys at HT who said something along the lines of "Torres was outstanding but Roy Hodgson must be sat at home thinking, I could have done with some of that".

Thick as pig s*** the lot of them.

I know what you mean about sport in general, but I think the Owen thing, the media straight bat 'I'm telling you nothing but positive cliches, doesn't necessarily follow through to what goes on behind closed doors. I think banter is just something that follows when people are comfortable.

I remember one company I worked for where everyone was on the make and giving it maximum corporate face all the time with their eye on the next role, no banter, no fun, just furious networking and crawling. Moved to another company that on the surface should have been no different, just as monolithic, multinational etc, but the atmosphere was totally different, no work faces, honesty, everyone pulling for each other, and good banter. It's not necessarily all about the atmosphere, but it may be telling that over a three year period one reduced it's headcount by 50%, the other increased their by the same owing to their relative performances.

You can't JUST do phase of play with 11 a side, there must be small sided games in there else the side loses the ability to move the ball quickly.

Oh hang on a minute.......

One of the few pleasures of last season was watching the likes of Lucas, Mascherano and Aquilani homing in on the referee whenever a decision was given against Liverpool, or running to the scene whenever a fight looked like brewing. Aquilani may not be the hardest in a head on confrontation, but by God he was a snide and cynical b*****d when he didn't have to risk his skin, and I liked him for it.

Given his performance, that's the most use he'd be the club.

not having that, he was ok yesterday. He was 10 times better than what poulson would have been, and he only played for the first time in months this week after breaking his ankle.

I don't. When a team is struggling, it's a brave person to break the mould and try to add some cheer, for fear of not taking things seriously. Under Hodgson, I can imagine that was the case, as he was vewy sewious.

FFS! he has just come back from 3 months or so out with a broken ankle, he has just played in his first merseyside derby where we were are a severe risk of absolute humiliation and he contributed to ensuring we put in an improved performance. and yet he still gets whinged at. give him a break will ya

I goes back a long way for Has IIRC, about two years maybe to some chat about the relative merits of Levia and Spearing.
