Do you think its a guarantee?

I always thought that it was to be honest, even a couple of weeks back but now i dont know. We needed to have start improving by now which we havent and even if we do that immediately, we'll have Tottenham and Citeh spend millions to further improve their squad in Jan. Someone like Mancini at Citeh can use his pull and really attract some quality players.

For the first time, i'm worried about a fourth placed finish.

Yeah. Easy.

Probably

I was convinced we would until today - but I think that's the worst I've seen us play since Evans and Souness.

Aye. I was also sure we'd pull it together and easily get past these pretenders but i'm really doubting it now. We'll beat Wolves on boxing day, but away to Villa a few days later looks like a very very tough game now.

In the summer I said we had real problems in all departments with the squad, bar goalkeeper. I didn't expect us to implode quite so spectacularly but I think we are in for more of the same sort of results throughout the season. There may be a modest improvement but it won't be enough to finish in the top 4 unless we change things dramatically now.

Mascherano, Lucas and a gamble on Aquilani was never going to be enough.

Nothing new in wide positions.

Only 1 striker of any quality.

In the last few years we've went on big, 10, 12 game unbeaten runs, with massive amounts of back to back wins.

This team hasn't a chance of doing that this season, as it stands. We haven't won two league games in a row since September.

Here's something else for you to worry about. On current play, we haven't a prayer of even qualifying for the Europa Cup at the end of the season.

The only positive I can think of is that the battle for 4th place is often a battle among teams that are just woefully inconsistent. Dropping points when going for 4th isn't nearly as costly as it is when challenging for the league because we know that the teams around us - City, Spurs, Villa will also drop points.

This makes our games against those sides the crucial ones.

We're at a really dangerous point at the moment though - either absolutely everyone has to sort it out - start playing like they look like they care,... or I really could see Rafa's position becoming untenable and us finishing in mid-table.

What is horribly depressing is that after losing against Villa, we won 4 league games in a row (taking us up to the end of September). But in the 3 months since then - we've not managed to win consecutive league games

Villa might just end up as one of the biggest games in Rafa's career. If we were to lose that they'd definitely bin him I think.

We do have a f***ing brilliant record there though.

I believe we will improve slowly, some good wins I hope, but some set backs as we are fragile. As it is we've lost too much ground even at this stage and involvement in the Europa league is bound to be a mixed blessing Just as much depends on the continuing form of Villa and Spurs.

If Rafa can get his s*** together there is still time but frankly the fact we are now nervous about securing 4th place tells its own story

Understandably we've gone into dog it mode, try and keep some clean sheets etc, but it's not always the bravest or best way to get out of a rut, we really need some inspiration

which needs to come from Rafa in team talks and selections, and Gerrard on the pitch and in the dressing room.

It's not happening

I reckon we'll finish 3rd. Seriously. we are approaching the half way point, had some shocking luck with the ref, player form and injury. Its about to turn in the new year, I can feel it.

We have to start playing well first and hope that at least three if not four clubs ahead of us blow up or continue to be average. Aside from the beachball it's been pretty standard, nothing outrageous or unusual on the fortune side.

We MIGHT scrape fourth,a huge MIGHT. The top three are done and dusted.
