Mick McCarthy on Five Live

Apprantly they were previewing the Lyon match and they had McCarthy and John Thompson from the Echo.....

McCarthy used to play for Lyon, hence why he was on

Sheila Fogherty asked about Manager / Player relationships first up, and McCarthy said

"I was asked on here to speak about Lyon, not Rafa Benitez" and put the phone down

Good on him if true

what manager player relationship was she getting at?

Been some speculation in the press today/over the last few days that the/some players are unhappy with Rafa's alledged detached, cold, aloof relationship he has with them & that coupled with his reported penchant for always focusing on what they need to improve & never offering any praise it's not helping morale, which is low after 3 straight defeats

It was a topic of discussion in Rafa's press conference yesterday

He was probably worried that they were going to drag up Saipan again, which they probably were.

Sounded like he did it out of respect for a fellow manager. Micks always seemed down to earth, and wouldnt like someone doing the same about him.

F*ckin Henry Winter is peddling this in the media.

They make out that Rafa never congratulates a player. Ever. What a load of b*llocks.

When Stevie asked for a DVD of his last game to look at anything he did wrong, Winter made a sly dig about "Rafa looking to improve his man-management skills too".

He's a ballbag. My girlfriend was laughing at me last night - i'm forever replying to him on Twitter telling him he's talking s****!

I like to think I'm slowly chipping away at his (over) confidence...

This is from his press conference yesterday..............

"When you repeat a lie a lot of times, it becomes true," said Benítez, smiling. "I have a lot of conversations with the players, as individuals and in groups, about positives and negatives.

"We have normal conversations, but I suppose they have to sell books, and to do that you have to write something If they do well, I say well done. I have said that hundreds of times, especially when we win. You cannot be close friends, because you have to make decisions. But the relationship is not bad.

"I was surprised with Fernando saying what he did in his book. It's true I spoke to him about the goal [in last season's 2-0 victory] against Chelsea, but it is a different situation in the dressing room.

"I offered him my congratulations about the baby, but I suppose you have to sell books."

He also said "Gerrard wanted to talk about the negatives of his play but I said, 'No: let's concentrate on the positives".

the madness of henry winter. he's delighted with fabio capello for exactly the same reason he's disapproving of rafa benitez. it's great that there's no stevie g-ing in the england camp, it's terrible that there's no stevie-ging inside melwood.

spot on. what exactly is the difference between benitez and capello?

Its hilarious. The press in this country treat him like he's a serial killer or something, its incredible. What the f*** he's done to have all these idiots despise him is absolutely bizarre. He bigs the players up all the time and for someone with "no personality" "detached from his players" etc you'll find him joking and laughing with players at press conferences and in pictures a hell of a lot. Winter today is asking s**** like "why did he buy Aquilani instead of getting Cattermole?" They're completely different players for f*** sake you idiot.
