Full marks to Xavi Valero

From the official site..........

Aurelio scored Liverpool's first goal on the night with an intelligent free-kick from distance that caught Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech off guard and the Brazilian revealed the set-piece routine had been discussed prior to kick-off.

"It was mentioned before the game by our goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero that Cech positions himself early for crosses," explained Aurelio.

"When I stepped-up to take the free-kick, I noticed he was already in a position to wait for a cross, as were the men in the wall, so the space was there to try a shot.

"It was agreed beforehand that we would attempt it because even if the goalkeeper were to save it, he would position himself closer to the goal for the next free-kick and leave our players with more space to attack the cross inside the box.

"Fortunately it came off and was part of a good beginning for us."

Noticed when he scored that he pointed over to the bench and I half wondered if there had been some discussion of this before the game.

Excatly the same as Gary Mac's v Everton:

Beat me to it. I was about to say it was a mirror image of Gary Mac's against Everton. Macca was helped by the fact that minutes earlier (as I recall) he'd tried a cross and it caused problems so you just knew the goalie was going to edge further and further across for this one.

:) As soon as it went in I said to the missus that it was just like Gary Mac's!! She even remembered it which I was amazed about!!

I'd not so much called it as thought that he should try it.

As soon as I'd thought that he started pointing to the cluster of people, telling people where to move, and it just seemed so comedically overstated.

Something strange about that corner of that goal at Stamford Bridge - Cech was caught out by Aurelio there, Reina got caught by Drogba there and the for the Alex free-kick he seemed to leave a big gap there as well - also the Lampard fk that just went wide slightly earlier.

I reckon it's haunted

Fernando's also mentioned receiving a lot of useful advice from Valero. Xavi doesn't get much publicity but he's obviously doing a decent job behind the scenes with the whole team, not just the keepers

honestly... as it was all lining up I honestly thought to myself - he should do what Gary Mac did in the derby - it looked so on! when it happened I wanted to tell someone that I had called it as I knew then that no-one would believe me afterwards!

Exactly the same as Aurelio... I'm sure he had one a few minutes earlier that Cech came and got a punch on.

I seem to be in a minortiy as I though he should whip the ball into the box at pace and hope someone gets a flick on it. Amazing how many people called this before he did it, after the fact, on an internet forum.

As David Coleman once said, 'quite remarkable'

yeah he did, he had 3 in the first half hour, the 1st was flapped away, the 2nd went in and the 3rd was the penalty.

If he didn't mean it, that'd mean he skanked it & he clearly didn't.

I think he noticed Cech possibly concentrating on the defence to get them sorted & caught him completely off guard

He must have been pointing out what players were to pick up who in their ancient man marking system ;P

I called it the minute Aurelio was lining up and Cech wandered off to his far post.

I remember calling it when Aurelio was lining up to take the indirect free kick at Pompey

I'd like to add my name to the list of people who thought Aurelio was going to go for the near post. Not that I expected it to go in, but I thought he'd try it.
