Rio rolls up uninvited

Rio Ferdinand was a surprise gatecrasher at Glamour magazine's women of the year awards on Tuesday night.

Organisers were caught off guard when the Manchester United footballer rocked up "NFI" at the sw***y Mayfair bash with his new-found chum, the Gavin And Stacey actor James Corden.

"They'd been drinking together round the corner in Berkeley Square and James suggested he came along for the knees-up," says a VIP guest. "They were like bosom buddies. Rio informed us he just called James up out of the blue and told him he loved his show and wanted to meet up."

Fittingly, for a man who is widely expected to be the next England captain, Ferdinand was promptly plonked at a table opposite the Prime Minister's wife, Sarah Brown.

ROONEYS' RAGE AT RIO WEDDING NO-SHOW

Wayne Rooney

EXCLUSIVE

By Tom Carlin

Wayne Rooney and new bride Coleen are angrily demanding to know why team-mate Rio Ferdinand mysteriously snubbed their wedding.

The couple sent a car to take Rio and lover Rebecca Ellison to the airport to fly to Italy for the £5million bash.

Manchester United defender Rio - once banned from the game for forgetting to take a drugs test - had even been fitted for a suit for the ceremony.

But he and Rebecca pulled out at the last minute, leaving two empty seats at the £50,000-a-head celebrations.

And England heroes Rio and Rooney haven't spoken since.

A friend said: "Very, very late on it was apparent Rio was not turning up.

"If Wayne and Coleen had known two people weren't going to come there were loads of other people they could have invited instead."

The pal added: "It was furiously late. There's been no conversation since between Wayne and Rio."

Ferdinand had earlier told Rooney and Coleen, both 22, he would be there even though Rebecca is seven months pregnant with their second child. But when Wayne sent a car to whisk them to the airport, Rio, 29, and his lover were not at home.

And by that time it was too late to find replacements.

An insider said: "It's bizarre. Rio isn't known for having the best memory but surely he couldn't forget about the wedding.

"He hasn't even called to apologise or explain why he didn't attend.

"He accepted the invite months ago and they were expected to be there for the full week of celebrations.

"But they didn't show - so that was a waste of about £100,000.

"It's not the money that matters, it's the principle."

Ferdinand also missed Wayne's stag party in Ibiza earlier this month.

Rio, who has twice been caught driving with an out-of-date tax disc, spent the week before the wedding doing charity work in Nigeria. Organisers said he cut short the trip to get back in time for the bash.

But days after his no-show in Italy, Rio was seen partying at a nightclub in Israel with his brother Anton and former Leeds player Jody Morris.

A source said: "Rio didn't go to Wayne's stag do because he was worried he'd be criticised for enjoying himself while the European championships were on and England were stuck at home after failing to qualify.

"He is very PR-conscious because he is desperate to get his hands on the England captaincy and Wayne does understand that. Then he's pictured in a club a few days later.

"He can't go to Ibiza or Italy because Rebecca's pregnant or he's worried about his image - but he CAN go on a boys' trip to Israel. It makes no sense.

"Wayne is disappointed and wants an explanation."

A spokesman for Wayne and Coleen said: "It was a fantastic wedding which everybody present massively enjoyed." Rio was unavailable for comment last night.

HOLD ON, MAYBE HE JUST FORGOT. IT WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST TIME AFTER ALL!

'Rio was invited. Very, very late on it was apparent he was not turning up. There has been no conversation since between Wayne & Rio. The decision was furiously late. Other people could have been invited had we known'

Nice bloke.

considering the current financial difficulties a lot of people are finding themselves in and also the fact that this summer England should have been at the euros if it wasn't for the over paid and over rated stars like rooney its disgusting in more way than one

My wife bought a copy of OK with the Wayne and Colleen wedding pics in it. The players in the pictures were:

Duncan Ferguson

Alan Stubbs

John O'Shea

Michael Carrick

Think there was one other but he was hardly a big name.

Footballers should be allowed to take whatever recreational drugs they want, missing a mates wedding is a bit off though.

I'm sure if half your defence were out of their trees for a CL semi you'd stick by that line.
