Any one seen or heard of any updates as to whether Agger is likely to be fit for the start of pre-season?

 

If so, what's everyone's opinions on our likely preferred pairing of centre backs - if it's gonna be Agger & Skrtel, is Carra dropable? Unless Degen has a nightmare, I can't see Carra being our preferred right back...

There is absolutely no chance of Carra not being in the starting XI somewhere. Although I agree that the Skrtel / Agger combination excites me.

Carra must be a great comfort blanket for Rafa. He has brought in Skrtel this season and it appears on form to date that he is able for this level. Agger has already proved it. With 2 new full backs in Dossana (if its concluded) and Degen, Rafa knows he can start Agger and Skrtel and move Carra to either full back position if one struggles.

And Barry-Mascherano-Gerrard would make a good midfield 3 in there too.

There is absolutely no chance of Carra not being in the starting XI somewhere.

 

Could that be why rafa has only opted for (seemingly) a squad player as his signing for right back - does he have Carra in mind as his first choice in that position, with Degen (and Arbeloa) as back up?

 

I can't really see it as, if anything, he offers even less that Finnan going forward

I envisage a back four of Dossena, Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, with Dossena given license to go forward at will and Carragher dropping in to form a back three with Agger and Skrtel.

I think carra and sami proved definitively in 05/06 that you don't need pace to play an effective high line of defence.

 

What is more exciting about that partnership to me is that it would be the first time in a long time where we'd have two centrebacks who are both very comfortable on the ball.

My favourite CB pairing would be Carra and Agger, I think the onbly reason Carra was played at right back was due to injuries and I believe Rafa sees Carra and Agger as our first choice CB pairing.
