Arsenal are crazy. They're in massive amounts of debt with their new ground and would rather struggle than accept foreign money. I wouldn't be that bothered but it's a bit hypocritical in the fact their team and staff is pretty much void of any brits.

Nice guy that Usmanov!

Alisher Usmanov was born in 1953, Sept. 9 in Tchoust, Namangan region, Uzbekistan, USSR, uzbek by nationality (Uzbek was to become his nickname). His father held a post of prosecutor in Tashkent.

In August 1980 Usmanov together with an accomplice was found guilty in several crimes (three articles of the criminal code, including rape and racket) and condemned to 8 years in jail. Released in 1986 because of "exemplary behaviour" and "sincere repent". Aftewards Usmanov would tend to call himself "victim of political repressions".

Usmanov's further activities were not connected with politics, but they could make you a good reason to doubt his "sincere repent".

Uzbek is said to be a proxy of "businessman" Sergei Mikhailov :guns: better known as leader of the Solntsevo criminal group "Mikhas'". In 1995 due to Mikhas' lobbying he became the first deputy of the MAPO-Bank board director. Usmanov is also reported to have contacts with Vyacheslav Ivanov aka Yaponchik :guns:, Alimzhon Tokhtakhunov aka Taivanchik, Viktir Averin aka Avera, Khozhakhmet Noukhayev aka Khozha :guns:, and his native Uzbekistan "authorities" Hafur Rakhimov aka Hafur» and Salim Abduvaliyev:guns: aka Salim known to control drug industry in Middle Asia and drug traffic to Russia and Europe. In 1996 Usmanov placed in his bank several million dollars, said to belong to Tchechen criminal groups :dynamite:.

Usmanov's reputation tended to be a constant obstacle, when foreign parntners tried to make business with Russian commercial or official structures. Eg., in 1998 the Oppenheimersв refused to lend money to Moscow mayor Luzhkov, as they received infirmation on some Moscow officials being in close relations with Usmanov.

In 1999 a major Canadian delegation, including about 400 government officials and businesmen cancelled their visit to Russia, protesting against an attempt of certain Russian enterpreneurs to gain control of the Severalmaz company (a share belonging to Canadians). The Russian "enterpreneur" trying to snatch the company away was Usmanov and his main methods were racket and threatening.

In 1999 Lord Owen (ex-foreign minister?) admitted having been niminal head of Middlesex Holdings company controlled by Usmanov. Owen maimtained his ignorance about Uzbek's havin been in prison and his connections to the organised crime..

According to Forbes Alisher Usmanov is one of the "minor" Russian oligarchs. He owns "just" one billion dollars.

Not one British source who reported this yesterday, including the BBC, mentioned anything to do with his background and therefore noe began to question whether or not he was the sort of individual who ought to have a stake in one of this country's grandest footballing institutions.

This might have changed of course but everything Gary's typed there comes as news to me.

Here're the two links for those who read in Russian

http://www.compromat.ru/main/mig/a.htm

The second one is a more politically correct one from the Russian Wikipedia, but even it mentions his being in jail

http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ус...;ич

As far as I see, this is perfect example of a person with a dubious biography of the tumultous early 1990s in Russia which was then perfectly cleansed (as well as his money).

That's because he got his oar in first and his lawyers have written to every major UK newspaper:

“Mr Usmanov was imprisoned for various offences under the old Soviet regime. We wish to make it clear our client did not commit any of the offences with which he was charged. He was fully pardoned after President Mikhail Gorbachev took office. All references to these matters have now been expunged from police records . . . Mr Usmanov does not have any criminal record.”

That's not exactly true allegedly, as the article goes on to explain.

Wenger was caught having dinner with Dein about a month back. I would think he's well involved given their friendship

What do you mean "he was caught" having dinner?? They are long-standing mates, I would imagine they probably have dinner together every few weeks.

makes you wonder hwere it iwll end up. Man u next manager will not be british. they will lose their home grown lots too. not alot to relate to at clubs nowadays. imagine liverpool without gerrard or Carra. american owners, spanish manager, players from around the world, 1 english coach.

i know, its liverpool that matter etc etc, but I think about why the clubs were formed in the first place, and lads in the area who dreamed of playing for their team. Its near impossible now I would think. You would think Hammill would get a run in the carling cup for us, but what chance when we sign Leto, a 21 argentinian. Is he really any better than Hammill?

When Liverpool FC was formed we packed the line-up with Scotsmen. Lads in the area can dream of playing for the team all they like, but if the're not good enough they can f*ck off.

Exactly.

Most of our best players have been from outside the "area".
